Units of Study: Early American History, Civil War and Reconstruction, An Expanding America, U.S. On the Brink of Change, Hard Times and War, Cold War to Present Writing Component: Writing to Learn (note taking, journals, etc.) - Writing to Demonstrate Learning (open responses, essay questions, on-demands, etc) - Writing for a Real World Purpose (speeches, editorials, letters, research papers, feature articles, etc.) Classroom Rules: Rule #1 Be Respectful Rule #2 Be Prompt Rule #3 Be Prepared Consequences: Verbal Warning Teacher /Student Conferences Parent Contact Office Referral The teacher reserves the right to alter this syllabus at any time during the course. Grading Policy: A quiz can be given at any time over readings, notes, etc. Tests will consist of a combination of matching, multiple choice, short answer, open response, and essay questions. Various assignments will be given on a daily basis. Cheating on any assignment (homework, quiz, or test) will result in a “zero” for that assignment. Attendance Policy: Students have up to five school days to make up assignments and/ or tests due to an excused absence. Work may be made up before or after school and must be scheduled with the course instructor. Leaving Class: Students are required to have their agenda book in order to leave class. Students will not be allowed to leave without it under any circumstances. Disciplinary action will be taken as required by school policy. The instructor has the right to limit passes do to habitual use. Semester Test Policy: Students with any unexcused absences in a course or have been assigned to ASP are required to take the semester exam which counts as part of the semester grade. Plagiarism / Academic Dishonesty Policy: Plagiarism and academic dishonesty are serious offenses. The academic work of a student is expected to be his/her own effort. Students must give the author(s) credit for any source material used. To represent ideas or interpretations taken from a source without giving credit is a flagrant act. To present a borrowed passage after having changed a few words, even if the source is cited, is also plagiarism. Students who commit any act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade in that portion of the course work. Acts of academic dishonesty will be reported to the administration.
