PARKING LOT SAFETY AND KISS ’N’ RIDE CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE How long have Catholic Separate schools been educating Catholic children and contributing to the public good in Ontario? For about 170 years. In the early 1800’s there were separate schools in many cities, towns and townships. In Peel, three separate schools opened before Confederation (1867): St. James in Malton in the 1830’s, St. John’s Agricultural College in 1861 and St. Patrick’s (1861), both in Wildfield. ARE YOU MOVING? We are in the process of planning classes and staffing for the 2011/2012 school year. If you are planning to move anytime between now and September 2011, please inform the school at your earliest possible convenience. When dropping your child off at school, please use the Kiss and Ride Lane which is located at the west side of the school. For the safety of all of our precious children, CARS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO PARK, DROP OFF or PICK UP students in the driveway or bus lane located at the front of the school. TRAFFIC SAFETY Our school driveway is a matter of great concern in regards to the safety of our students. Therefore, we are reminding you again to use the Kiss ‘n’ Ride lane to drop off or pick up your child. You cannot park your vehicle in the Kiss ‘n’ Ride lane before school or at dismissal time during the day. When using the Kiss ‘n’ Ride program to drop off or pick up students, please remember: We clear the Kiss ‘N Ride usually in 10 minutes. Please be patient we are all BUSY but SAFETY comes first. The inside lane (closest to the school) is the only lane where cars can stop to drop off their children in the morning and pick up their children in the afternoon. Drivers should not be parking and leaving their vehicle to walk to the school to pick up their child. The outside lane is a drive thru lane. This means that there should be no stopping and/or loading or unloading of students. If your child is not at the Kiss ‘N Ride area at dismissal time, please park in one of the spaces available in the parking lot or circle around once more. Students are not permitted to cross the parking lot unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please do not walk your children through the two Kiss ‘n’ Ride lanes. This is very unsafe and drivers may not see you in time. Take the time to walk around the Kiss ‘n’ Ride lanes. There is no parking in the driveway. This is a fire zone and blocks the flow of traffic. WATER IN THE YARD As we approach the season of melting snow and rain, water is an inevitable feature of the schoolyard and presents an occasion for younger students to get wet socks and clothing. Our school approach is to contact parents to bring dry clothing. This is often inconvenient for parents. We suggest that you place an extra pair of socks and track pants in your child’s backpack in the event that a change of clothing is necessary. PEDICULOSIS Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are NOT connected in any way with dirt or neglect. If a case is found, we inform parents of the students in that classroom. We will check siblings. We ask that you check your own children regularly. INCLEMENT WEATHER FRONT DRIVEWAY The front of the school is for BUSES ONLY. CARS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO PARK, DROP OFF or PICK UP students in the driveway or bus lane located at the front of the school. When stopping your vehicle on the road in front of the school, please refrain from blocking the driveway so that designated Board personnel can access it when needed. LUNCH HOUR During the lunch hour, all students who stay for lunch are expected to remain at school, and all students who go home for lunch are expected to go home every day. If there is a change in the regular lunch hour procedure for your child, parent/guardians are asked to provide the teacher with a note explaining the change. LEAVING DURING SCHOOL DAY When it is necessary for your child to leave school early, please send a note to your child’s teacher advising him/ her of the time you will be picking your child up. Your child will be asked to meet you in the office at the indicated time. When dropping off or picking up students during school hours, please go to the office to sign your child in or out. We sang songs and listened to a scary story around the campfire just like a camping trip should be . We also had a karaoke dance party where everyone— even the teachers and our Vice Principal– showed off their singing skills. This was definitely one of the most memorable trips we’ve been on. We would like to thank the teachers and staff for a trip that we will value and treasure forever. MATH HOMEWORK HELP PILOT PROJECT The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that once again it will be participating in the Math Homework Help pilot project. This is the second year that the students in our Board will have access to live, interactive online math help through the expansion of a pilot project funded by the Ministry of Education. Homework Help is free, real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers. This project has now expanded to 31 English-Language Boards across the Province of Ontario, and the project’s goal remains to provide students in grades 7 to 10 with an after-hours online support in Mathematics. Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for 20 hours a week of individualized confidential math tutoring. There are discussion rooms for each grade where students can join in and see what questions other students are asking, watch the tutors draw on the whiteboard, and ask their own question for on-the-spot help. If they can't wait until the discussion rooms open, videos of best tutorials and commonly asked questions are available anytime. Other online math resources include math games and a virtual locker, where students can save their work. IS YOUR CHILD’S IMMUNIZATION RECORD UP TO DATE? You may be receiving a letter from Peel Public Health to update your child’s immunization record. It is important that you respond to this letter by calling or faxing Peel Public Health to provide your child’s immunization information. The annual screening, which is required by law, ensures children are protected from a number of vaccine preventable disease. All Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board students missing mandatory immunizations (i.e., Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps and Rubella) on their records will need to update their records, or provide a valid exemption, to avoid suspension. You don’t need to wait to get the letter to update your child’s records. You can report every time your child receives an immunization. Many parents believe their child’s vaccines are reported by their doctor, school or child-care facility but in fact, parent’s are responsible for reporting their child’s vaccines. Schools and childcare facilities only forward immunization records to Peel Public Health at the time of initial registration. Similarly, vaccines are not reported between health units. This means, if your child changes to a school in a new region, you need to contact the local health unit of the new school to report your child’s immunizations. To ensure your child’s immunization records are up-to-date, follow the tips below or call Peel Public Health for more information at 905-799-7700. To register for the site, visit the website www.ontario.ca/ homeworkhelp. Scroll down and you will find the link to the Homework Help Line. Students will need their OEN number to register. INTEGRATED RIDERSHIP – SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS The school board’s bus transportation services are operated by Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR). This is a consortium, or partnership, between the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board. The Ministry of Education requires school board bus transportation consortiums to improve efficiency. One initiative promoted by the Ministry of Education, that is designed to improve efficiency is known as integrated ridership. In integrated ridership, students from both Dufferin-Peel and Peel schools will ride on the same buses, where feasible. A number of school boards across the province have successfully implemented integrated ridership. All eligible students continue to be transported on runs where integrated ridership is implemented. Integrated ridership is designed to create a more effective and efficient operation of service, is more environmentally friendly and reduces traffic in our communities. Integrated ridership may also result in higher transportation funding levels for school boards. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has approved the implementation of integrated ridership, where feasible, starting September, 2011. Integrated ridership works best in situations where schools are located close to one another and the number of students involved helps achieve better organized bus runs. STOPR staff is currently assessing areas where integrated ridership would work best. Some minor adjustments to start and dismissal times may be required at schools selected for integrated ridership. It should be noted that integrated ridership does not work well in all areas and, as a result, there may be only a few areas that will have this program. STOPR is also in the process of revising policies and procedures to reflect integrated ridership services at some schools. For example, procedures related to behavioural issues on buses have been reviewed and principals will continue to be responsible for students from their school. STOPR will provide additional information regarding the selection of schools where integrated ridership will be implemented. STOPR will keep you informed through regular updates in school newsletters over the upcoming months.
