CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
St. Bonaventure celebrated “Catholic Education – Good
News For All” from May 3 to May 8 2009. Each day
began with special readings, reflections and community
prayers. Our grade 8 students received the sacrament of
Confirmation. They organized a living rosary for the
school. Our junior students participated in water colour
workshops with a local artist – Jill Ireland. Our primary
students had an enjoyable field trip to the Toronto Zoo.
All the classes enjoyed the presentation by the Earth
Rangers as well as being involved in physical activities
with leaders from the Cassie Campbell Recreation Center.
This week provided us with the opportunity to reflect on
the mission of our Catholic schools as they strive to
integrate the Gospel values of Jesus in every aspect of the
school’s life and curriculum.
THE ROSARY
Every Tuesday the Legion of Mary comes in to say the
Rosary with the grade two students during the lunch
recess.
As well every Friday in May the Rosary Club prays the
rosary in the library during the lunch recess. We have
over forty students who participate weekly. The students
also have the opportunity to make crafts. Thank you to
Mrs. C. Lomasney and to Mrs. A. Kless for providing this
opportunity to our students from grades one to four.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the grade 8 students who received the
sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday May 5th 2009 at

school at your earliest possible
convenience.

JK STUDENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2009 NOT YET
REGISTERED?
If you have a child who is eligible to start Junior
Kindergarten this September and you haven’t registered
him/her, please call the school and let us know.
It is important that we have the most accurate projected
pupil enrolment for September 2009 at this time.
HOT WEATHER TIPS
Wear protective clothing to cover the skin. i.e. long
sleeves, Capri pants.
Wear a hat to protect both the eyes
and the skin on the head.
Wear sun screen or sun
block – the higher the factor
number, the greater the protection.
Know your skin type, for example
fair skinned people are more sensitive to ultra-violet
radiation.
Drink lots of fluids. NOTE: Bottles of water are allowed
in the classroom, however, not outside. Water bottles
coming from home and going home at the end of the day
need to be inside the backpack- not exposed.
DRESS CODE
In keeping with the Board’s mission statement and
Catholic School teachings, each school is committed to
standards of neatness, cleanliness, modesty and good
taste.
Students are required to dress in a manner and attire
appropriate for a school environment.
Hats/headwear are acceptable for outside.
Clothing must display appropriate and acceptable
words and graphics.
Shorts and skirts must reach the bottom of the
student’s fingertips when hands are relaxed at their
side.
Tops, shirts and t-shirts must cover the shoulders.
Students who come in unacceptable attire may be asked
to phone their parents to arrange for a change of clothing.
We ask for your support in ensuring that your child makes
appropriate clothing choices.
WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN
On May 20th 2009, St. Bonaventure
hosted the first “Welcome to
Kindergarten” night. “Welcome to
Kindergarten” is a provincial
initiative implemented by the
Learning Partnership and local
schools to provide pre-school
children and their families with the
resources and experience to support
early learning and a smooth transition to formal
education. It also allows St. Bonaventure to welcome our
newest student members and their families to our school
community.
The evening was a great success. Thank-you to all the
St. Bonaventure staff who worked so hard to make the
evening educational and exciting for our new JK students.
Additional thanks to the Parent Council for assisting and
providing healthy snacks at the snack centre. We look
forward to next year’s “Welcome to Kindergarten”
evening!
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Heart & Stroke Jump Rope for Heart is a
contagious fundraising event from the Heart and Stroke
Foundation that gets our kids active and invests in the
future of all Canadian children. It activates our children to
embrace a lifetime of healthy living and social
responsibility. On Friday May 22nd St. Bonaventure held
two events. We provided 6
stations for grades JK to grade 5.
In the afternoon we held a Jump
Rope Jam for grades 6 to 8. This
event enabled the endurance
skippers, speed skippers and
group skippers to showcase their
talents. Both events encouraged
the students to:
1) Get physically active and be heart healthy.
2) Teach kids the importance of helping others and
giving back to the community.
3) Raise vital funds for heart disease, stroke research and
health education.
4) Earn Heart-Smart Points for our school, so we are able
to redeem them for valuable school resources.
We would like to thank all the students who participated
in both events. A very special thanks to Mrs. Tuzi’s
grade 4 students who ran the 6 stations in the morning.
To all the students at St. Bonaventure who helped to
make this event a success, we thank you! As well as, this
event could not have been possible without the assistance
of the following teachers: Mrs. Gallant, Mr. Mowat,
Ms. Baltazar, Ms. Poerba, Mrs. Trueman, Mrs. Stehle,
Mrs. Dunec, Mrs. Arena, Mrs. van Schie, Mrs. Hayes,
Mrs. Lyons, and Mrs. Tuzi.

BRAMPTON WEST STUDENT DIVERSITY CONFERENCE
On Tuesday, May 26th, ten Grade Seven students from
St. Bonaventure attended the Brampton West Family of
Schools annual Student Diversity Conference. This year’s
theme “Awareness to Action” encouraged the attendees to
not only become more aware of the factors that contribute
to our diversity, but to bring this awareness into action in
their schools. Students attended workshops on Diversity,
Leadership, Media, Sexism, Body Image, Bullying,
Disability, Gang Culture, Stereotyping and Racism. The
students will now use this knowledge, along with their
leadership skills, to promote diversity initiatives in our
school. Representatives from St. Bonaventure were
Joshua C., Crystal C., Shane S., Rachel D., Gashi K.,
Stefen M., Jermaine P., Peter P., Stephen R., and

Congratulations to the Junior Boys Basketball Team
(Mark, Brandon, Jake, Jordan, Jahvon, Denzel,
Michael G., Michael S., Maurizio, Aundre, Jason, and
Alex) who competed in two tournaments during the
month of May. The team triumphed in the first
mini-tournament, beating out 3 other schools. At the
Family Level Tournament, the boys put forth a
tremendous effort coming in third out of all Brampton
West. Mr. Torres and Mrs. Killman would like to thank
the entire team for all their hard work and dedication. We
are very proud of you. Go Sharks!
On May 19th, the St. Bonaventure Sharks headed over to
the baseball diamonds at Fred Kline Park to play some
softball with their teammates. The Sharks faired well
among the other schools, demonstrating some impressive
throwing and hitting skills. Our outfielders did a fabulous
job making some terrific catches in the field, stopping the
other teams from scoring many important runs. We are
proud of our boys as they placed third at their diamond.
It was a fun day for all.
Team Members: Dennis, Joey, Neil, Royce, Travon,
Joseph, Jermaine, Andre, Adam, Michael Z, Alex and

Despite some nervousness, the St. Bonaventure girls

The initiative
Incidents of serious violent crimes continue to rise in Peel Region every year. While our community is
still one of the safest places in the world to live, if we continue to accept the escalation of violence as inevitable,, we will never stem its growth. It’s time now to join together to find ways to make our community a safer and better place to live and work. This website is a place to pose questions, provide your input
and connect with others who want to make a difference. Working together we can connect problems with
solutions and connect ideas into actions.
GET INVOLVED. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE INITIATIVE PLEASE CALL 905-458-8203.
