Father, all-powerful God, your eternal Word took flesh on our earth when the Virgin Mary placed her life at the service of your plan. Lift our minds in watchful hope to heart the voice which announces his glory and open our minds to receive the Spirit who prepares us for his coming. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. During the winter months, inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio and television stations: Radio Stations: VIRGIN RADIO FM99.9 CFTR AM680 CJCL AM590 CFRB AM1010 CJBC (FR) AM860 FM93.1 CHIN FM100.7/AM1540 CHUM AM1050 CFNY FM102.1/AM640 CHFI FM98.1 EZ ROCK FM97.3 FM Z103.5 FM Q107 CBC99.1 Television Stations: CITYPULSE CTV GLOBAL NEWS For additional information please see insert in this newsletter, or visit: stopr.ca Lord, God, you showed us the tenderness of your love in Mary’s newborn Son. Like Mary, may we always be ready to say “yes” to your plan, so that Jesus may be born in us. We ask you to prepare our hearts to welcome him, so that like the angels who announced his birth, we too might greet his coming with joy. To continue to enhancing the safety of all our students, please remember the following: DO NOT PARK in the Kiss & Ride lanes WATCH for CHILDREN at all times DO NOT OPEN DOORS onto “drive-through lanes” LARGE VEHICLES please advance in the Kiss & Ride Lane to assist in making the turn and avoid backing up REDUCE YOUR SPEED entering and exiting school The Junior Boys’ Volleyball Team this year showed a large amount of improvement in relation to various skills. During the tournament matches, the team members played very well and showed great sportsmanship. They showed they were a team for opposing teams to admire. Thank you for representing St. Anne so well and for being a great team! Coaches: Mr. Halverson and Mr. Kerr Pals: "There is always room for one more!" The P.A.L.S program has begun at St. Anne. It is a recess program whereby students in grades 5 & 6 plan and play structured games with students in grades 1-3. P.A.L.S runs Monday to Thursday at lunch recess. Youth Faith Ambassadors: This week 25 student leaders in grades 6, 7, and 8 were commissioned in their role as Youth Faith Ambassadors for the 2012-2013 school year. Their first project was our school's virtues assembly celebrating the virtue of conscience and sharing how we demonstrate conscience by helping put a stop to bullying in our school community. They will run our school Giving Tree project as well as other social justice initiatives such as the collecting of pop tabs, milk bags, supporting our school food drives and ShareLife events later this year. They will work with student council to share Advent celebrations in classes as well as supporting school liturgies throughout the school year. Student Council 2012-2013: St. Anne held Student Council elections this year to create our new student parliament. 63 new members were appointed and elected to support our school community. The Make a Difference Party were elected with the most seats so their leaders will become this year's school prime ministers. Student Council has already supported the school with spirit week, a school dance and leading our first school mass. They will continue to share leadership by running "Advent"ure Day, Playday, school spirit weeks, dances, and a variety of school initiatives that also support school safety and education projects. They also support the Youth Faith Ambassadors with joint school leaders. All students should be commended for their shared leadership and commitment to school life at St. Anne. Our first Waste Audit was held on Wednesday November 14, 2012. This audit was used to measure how much waste each class was producing and how effectively our litter-less lunch program is progressing. It tallied the following: reusable items (containers and cutlery), compostable items (peels, cores, stems from fruit, paper napkins, etc), and recyclable items, along with waste (things that went into the garbage). Overall, we did quite well, with most classes having less waste than reusable, compostable and recyclable items. Our results have been graphed and posted in the hall by the large gym. Our goal has been to try and reduce our waste as much as possible, in order to foster environmental stewardship in our students. Below are a few tips to help when packing litterless lunches at home: Bring lunches and drinks in reusable containers or thermoses Use stainless steel (metal) forks and spoons instead of plastic ones Try using cloth napkins which are reusable Try bringing juice boxes which are recyclable versus juice bags (ie. Kool-Aid Jammers) Make snacks rather than buying pre-packaged ones. For example, you can make your own rice krispies, jello and pudding instead of buying ones already made. Their packages are not recyclable and create extra waste Buy larger servings of items and send them in reusable containers. For example, buy big jugs of juice or large containers of yogurt and fill smaller reusable ones for your lunch bag Include a “YUK” BAG in your lunch bag to bring all fruit and vegetable peels, and cores home. This will keep the inside of your child’s lunch bag clean, while allowing them to bring home things that can be put into your Green Bin. We hope that you will use some of these tips and continue to support our Litter-less Lunch Program.
