HRE101 NAME: ___________________________ Unit 2 Summative: Disciples Diary Overview As the summative assignment for unit 2 you will be required to write your own personal newsletter, similar to the Campion Champion which is produced several times a year by the student body. The assignment will require you to use the knowledge and skills that you have gained throughout this unit and apply it to create a newsletter that would be reflective of the people, customs and society during the time of Jesus. Directions You will go to the Campion website found at www.dpcdsb.org/CAMPI. Once there your will click on the departments subheading found in the tool bar at the top of the page. Scroll down and click on the Religion icon. Next you are going to click on the HRE 101 subheading found on the left hand side of this page. Scroll down to the very bottom of the page where course materials are listed. Here you will find the newsletter template already done for you; all you have to do is type in the information, save and then print. Instructions You will receive one day in class to work on your rough draft. There are eight sections to this assignment, all outlined on the template, with specific instructions/questions that must be answered in the specific section. You will then receive two additional work periods in the library during which you will type your information into the allotted space provided. Make sure you stick to the space requirements or it will alter the formatting of the template. TASK ONE: Subheading: The title of the newsletter has already been given to you; “Disciples Dairy”. However, you will be responsible for coming up with a catchy and creative subheading that will be placed underneath it. Make sure that your subheading is reflective of the information that will be found in your newsletter. TASK TWO: Newspaper Article: In this section you have been given a picture of the empty tomb and the heading “Empty Tomb: Our Lord Has Risen!” Adhering to the newspaper writing process that you have been taught and practiced through this unit, you will be required to write a five paragraph newspaper article. You may use your own imagination or any information that has been given to you throughout the unit to help you fill in the information. In addition, you will have to come up with a caption to describe the photo and a subheading. This has been clearly identified for you on the template. TASK THREE: Healing Testimonials: In this section you have been given 3 different people who have witnessed firsthand the miracle work of Jesus. For each of the people you must write a response of how they felt afterwards. TASK FOUR: Time for a Parable: In this section you are to choose one out of the many parables we studied throughout the unit. Summarize the story and explain the religious/moral lesson behind it. TASK FIVE: Message from Peter’s Desk: In this section, write a letter from Peter’s perspective to an early Christian community. Jesus has just died, risen and ascended into heaven. Peter is informing this community about what happened and is instructing them on how they should continue to follow Jesus’ practices and teachings. TASK SIX: Being a Good Disciple: In this section you have been given three people who have recently converted to Christianity and it is your job to tell us the reasons why they converted. TASK SEVEN: Christians in Your Community: Creating a fictional character, you are to write a mini biography of how their life has changed since they converted to Christianity and the struggles that they are facing as an early Christian. TASK EIGHT: Advertisement: You are to create an advertisement for a product that would have been used during the time of Jesus. Make sure that the product is relevant to the time period (i.e. video games did not exist back then). Make sure you have a picture, description and cost of the item.
