EXPECTATIONS – For students whom Mrs. Maxwell has the distinct privilege of having in class!
PROCEDURES TO GUIDE OUR BEHAVIOR:
Entering our Classroom:
• All students will enter our classroom in a quiet and respectful manner.
• All students in an incoming class will wait to enter the room until the students
from the current class have exited.
• All students will pick up their handouts from the tray located on the front lab table.
Preparing for Class:
• Check your phone to make sure it is turned off or on silent.
• Make sure your pencil is filled with lead or is sharpened.
• If you have been absent, obtain your papers from the “While You Were Out” file.
• If you have questions about class work, ask me!
• Be in your seat when it is time to start class.
• Science binder/folder is on your desk, opened to the table of contents page.
• Attend to the Bell Ringer task.
Arriving late:
• Upon arriving, sign in on the “Late to Class” clipboard. Be sure to fill in the date, your name, and
the reason you are late. If you have a note from the office or another teacher, place the note in the
container located by the clipboard.
• Follow procedures for entering our classroom and preparing for class. Students arriving late will
not disrupt the flow of class that is already in progress. Wait for a break in the action, if you have
a question about what you should be doing.
Participating in Class:
• Talking while I am talking is not allowed. When I am addressing the class, giving instructions,
notes, assignments, etc., you are required to listen, not talk!
• Talking while one of your classmates is talking is NOT allowed. Raise your hand! Wait your
turn!
• Respect the speaker by staying in your seat and keeping extra noise to a minimum. Wait until a
more convenient time to get up and throw something in the trash, get a tissue, or get some germ-x.
Coming to Attention:
• When you hear one ring of the bell, you have 1 minute to come to attention. This may mean for
you to quit talking, for you to ask your neighbor to turn around, or for you to become situated in a
listening position.
• When you hear two rings of the bell, I will be ready to begin!
Turning in Assignments:
• When a homework assignment is due, place it on your desk and wait for further instructions.
• If you have a late homework assignment to turn in, place it in the “Late Work” tray on my desk.
The date you turn in the work and the reason it is late must be written on your paper; otherwise no
credit will be given.
• Assignments that are one day late, will receive a 2-point deduction. Assignments that are two
days late will receive a 4-point deduction. Assignments that are three days late will receive an 8point deduction. Assignments that are turned in past the 3-day grace period will be accepted.
• Late work due to excused absences will be accepted based on school wide policy. The number of
days that you are absent is the number of days you have to make up missing work.
Organizing for Success:
• All students will keep class materials in either a 3-ring binder or in a folder with metal prongs.
• All students will keep a table of contents page for their binder/folder. The TOC page will be
posted on the Smartboard for 1-2 minutes each day, and students will update daily.
• Each entry on your TOC will correspond to a handout that will be kept in your binder/folder. The
handout will be numbered for easy identification.
• At the end of each class period, all students will secure their materials in their binder/folder before
the class is dismissed.
• Every 4 ½ weeks, you will have an opportunity to showcase your organizational skills by
completing a binder quiz, which is worth 40 points. An organized binder will ensure you do well
on the quiz.
Visiting the Restroom During Class:
• All students are expected to use the restroom during their travel time between classes. You should
assess your personal situation and make a judgment call as to whether it is more important to
check your messages/instragram/snapchat/facebook/twitter or visit the restroom.
• Of course, emergency restroom visits will be allowed. If emergencies happen every day they
become normal occurrences and hence will not be allowed.
• If you have a medical condition that requires you to need open restroom privileges, you may turn
in a doctor’s note to the Trojan Academy office and the administration will notify me.
Needing an Extra Handout?:
• All students will take special care to keep up with their handouts.
• If unforeseen events occur and you need an extra handout, you will find them in labeled folders in
the back corner of the classroom. Please limit the use of these extra handouts to emergency
situations; I only make 10 extra copies of each handout. An empty folder means I do not have any
extras. At this point, you will need to use your own problem solving skills to find a solution.
Finishing Strong:
• Each class period will end with a 5-minute debriefing session. This does not mean that we quit 5
minutes early! Students will not pack up their materials.
• When the debriefing signal sounds, all students will, if necessary, return to their desks.
• Exit tickets will be completed. These will be turned in on your way out of the classroom.
•
Announcements and reminders will be given. I will dismiss the class when all students are seated
and quiet.
PROCEDURES TO GUIDE OUR ACADEMIC SUCCESS:
Completing Homework:
• Only meaningful homework will be assigned. I will assign no busywork!
• All students will be capable of completing homework assignments. This means you will have the
tools/resources you need to accomplish the task. However, effort will be required on your part!
• Daily grades will be given for all homework assignments.
• Not completing homework will result in zeros for that assignment. However, you may follow the
late work policy for turning in homework for reduced credit.
• All students will turn in neat and legible work. Wadded papers, frayed edges, and illegible writing
will not be accepted. You will have to redo the work before credit will be awarded.
• 3 missed homework assignments will result in an office referral.
Completing Class Work:
• All students will complete their own work. Of course, you are encouraged to ask questions and
seek guidance if you do not understand.
• All students will do their share of group assignments. Don’t disrespect yourself and your peers by
expecting them to do your work for you. At any time you feel a group member is not doing their
share of the workload, I welcome you to bring that to my attention. I will take action!
• If two or more students turn in identical work (word for word with the same misspellings and
grammatical errors, it will be assessed as a violation of your academic integrity (cheating). I will
conference with the students involved and split the grade between them. For example: If two
students turn in an identical 100% paper, each student will receive a 50% (F) on the assignment.
Answering in Complete Sentences:
• Major assignments (Lab Reports, Text Analysis Questions, Essays, Reflective Writing, etc.) will
be written in complete sentence and paragraph form.
• Identifying the subject noun and verb will help you identify if your sentence is complete.
• Because, although, and if are great words to incorporate in your answers because they force you to
explain.
Preparing for Assessment:
• All students will need to develop study skills. Research shows a few minutes of study each day is
much more effective than cramming the morning before the test.
• Study guides and review sheets will be given.
• Review games will be used.
• Formative assessment (ungraded) will help you keep track of your learning and help you evaluate
your study needs.
• In addition, all students will need to spend a certain amount of time outside of class in order to
fully prepare for quizzes/tests.
Evaluating Progress:
• CFU (check for understanding) Moments. When I call for a CFU Moment, students will respond
to questions and assess their understanding of the material.
•
•
STOP (Stop Teaching Observe Progress). When I call for a STOP, students will reflect on our
progress for the day and assess their learning.
Exit Tickets will be utilized at the end of class to assess student progress.
