FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER
a. Report on Independent Studies Modality (Mary Dominguez)
Mary provided an update on the Independent Studies modality and contrasted with the
Special Projects (45 series) courses and Special Topics/Experimental Course design (139
series). All 45 series courses and 139 series courses must come to Curriculum
Committee for approval and this lessens the flexibility of the discipline to offer them;
the Independent Studies process requires the same contact hours and must follow the
same guidelines as appear in the official COR. Mary, LaVerne, and others emphasized
that offering a course through Independent Studies should be a last resort and does not
eliminate the need for careful enrollment management practices.
No action taken, refer to Academic Senate
b. Prerequisite Challenge Form (Mary Dominguez)
Committee members reviewed the new form with revisions.
MSP (one abstention) to approve revisions to the form; refer to Academic Senate for
approval.
c. Catalog Update (Ruby Garcia)
The committee applauded Ruby for her efforts in creating the 2014-2015 catalog.
Several individuals attended the “catalog review day” and the catalog is now ready for
print.
d. Proposed timelines for catalog cutoff, 2014-15 academic year (LaVerne Cook, Carol
Kimbrough)
LaVerne discussed timelines for articulation and degree audit verification. Deadlines for
the 2015-16 catalog will be closed at the end of the fall semester (December). This will
mean an increase in the Curriculum Committee workload in fall (and may necessitate
additional meetings and/or an increase in time from 2:00-4:30). Deadlines will need to
be clearly communicated to all faculty and deans.
No action taken, refer as information to Academic Senate
e. Proposed change to format for AA, AS degrees (LaVerne Cook)
Proposed changes to the AA, AS degree format were distributed to committee members
for review over the summer. LaVerne will take the proposed changes to the counseling
staff for further review/recommendations.
No action, return to agenda in fall 2014.

No action, return to agenda in fall 2014.
g. Update: Curriculum Institute 7/10-12, San Jose
