1. ASHC Hosts Employee Recognition Luncheon
On May 20th, the Associated Students of
Hartnell College honored college employees
with a walk down the red carpet, photos with
ASHC Vice Presidents, a delicious lunch
provided by Mike Cunane and staff,
recognition of recent retirees, and the
presentation of commemorative stars to those
in attendance. ASHC Vice Presidents Jorge
Cruz, Maria Lozano, Miriam Munoz and Erica
Lomeli along with members of the ASHC
Senate helped turn Steinbeck Hall into the

Hollywood Walk of Fame, where everyone felt like a star. The event also featured the music of
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, among others.
During the luncheon current and incoming ASHC Senate members introduced themselves and
personally thanked all in attendance and presented certificates to retiring faculty and staff. Since
the event, the ASHC Senate has received positive feedback from the campus community for
hosting the luncheon. All photos taken will be posted to the new ASHC Facebook page. The
ASHC Senate would also like to thank the cafeteria staff for the food and utensils provided.

2. EOPS, CARE, CalWORKs, and DSPS Programs Recognize Student Achievement
On Wednesday, May 22, 2013 the Hartnell
College EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs and DSPS
programs hosted the 14th annual Student
Recognition Ceremony at the Western Stage.
EOPS - Extended Opportunity Programs and
Services
CARE - Cooperative Agencies Resources for
Education
CalWORKs - California Work Opportunity and
Responsibility to Kids
DSPS - Department of Supportive Programs
and Services
This annual event celebrates and recognizes the
success of Hartnell College students enrolled in
four historically large support programs. Dr.
Romero Jalomo opened the ceremony that
included three inspirational speakers who are
current and former students. Each speaker
described the source of their success, often
mentioning family and the assistance of
Hartnell College support programs. Several
Hartnell College faculty and staff were honored
for their contribution to student access and
success.
More than 122 program students will graduate this year with 22 students receiving local and
regional scholarships. As with past recognition ceremonies, this event was well attended and
yielded positive feedback from those in attendance. One EOPS student, Edgar Mares, won the
Karl S. Pister Scholarship and will receive $20,000 to attend UC Santa Cruz in fall 2013.
3. Student Trustee Attends Salinas Rotary Club Special Event
On May 21, Student Trustee Elaine Duran was my guest
at the Salinas Rotary Club. This particular meeting
included a very special guest speaker, Dr. Terari Trent (in
photo at left with Ms. Duran). Dr. Trent has appeared on
the Oprah Winfrey show and other programs. She was on
Oprah's "favorite guests" list when she reflected over the
years and the many guests that appeared on her show.
She has an inspiring story and message and you can read
about her at http://www.tinogona.com/about.html.

distribution of agricultural commodities. The class meets monthly through November 2013.
