ASHC Hosts Employee Recognition Luncheon On May 20th, the Associated Students of Hartnell College honored college employees with a walk down the red carpet, photos with ASHC Vice Presidents, a delicious lunch provided by Mike Cunane and staff, recognition of recent retirees, and the presentation of commemorative stars to those in attendance. ASHC Vice Presidents Jorge Cruz, Maria Lozano, Miriam Munoz and Erica Lomeli along with members of the ASHC Senate helped turn Steinbeck Hall into the L to R: Professor Aurelia Vacaflor, ASHC Vice President Jorge Cruz, Professor Aurora Mendez Hollywood Walk of Fame, where everyone felt like a star. The event also featured the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, among others. During the luncheon current and incoming ASHC Senate members introduced themselves and personally thanked all in attendance and presented certificates to retiring faculty and staff. Since the event, the ASHC Senate has received positive feedback from the campus community for hosting the luncheon. All photos taken will be posted to the new ASHC Facebook page. EOPS, CARE, CalWORKs, and DSPS Programs Recognize Student Achievement On Wednesday, May 22, 2013 the Hartnell College EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs and DSPS programs hosted the 14th annual Student Recognition Ceremony at the Western Stage. EOPS - Extended Opportunity Programs and Services CARE - Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education CalWORKs - California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids DSPS - Department of Supportive Programs and Services This annual event celebrates and recognizes the success of Hartnell College students enrolled in four historically large support programs. Dr. Romero Jalomo opened the ceremony that included three inspirational speakers who are current and former students. Each speaker described the source of their success, often mentioning family and the assistance of Hartnell College support programs. Several Hartnell College faculty and staff were honored for their contribution to student access and success. More than 122 program students will graduate this year with 22 students receiving local and regional scholarships. As with past recognition ceremonies, this event was well attended and yielded positive feedback from those in attendance. One EOPS student, Edgar Mares, won the Karl S. Pister Scholarship and will receive $20,000 to attend UC Santa Cruz in fall 2013. 3. Student Trustee Attends Salinas Rotary Club Special Event On May 21, Student Trustee Elaine Duran was my guest at the Salinas Rotary Club. This particular meeting included a very special guest speaker, Dr. Terari Trent (in photo at left with Ms. Duran). Dr. Trent has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show and other programs. She was on Oprah's "favorite guests" list when she reflected over the years and the many guests that appeared on her show. "AgKnowledge" Program Holds Class at Alisal Campus On Friday, May 24, the "AgKnowledge" Program held its class at the Alisal Campus. I am a member of the 7th "AgKnowledge" class which is co- sponsored by the Grower-Shipper Association and Monterey County. The mission of the program is “To promote and educate about the health, social and cultural benefits of agriculture to the community and society as a whole.” Don Howell, General Manager at Floricultura. 5 million orchids in background. This Executive Seminar Program provides policy makers, educators, media, and other community leaders the opportunity to “walk in the shoes of a farmer”, to see Monterey County through the eyes of those involved in the many facets of agriculture. AgKnowledge class members will better understand the heart of those that work the land or otherwise contribute to the production and distribution of agricultural commodities. The class meets monthly through November 2013. This particular class included the following: An overview of Ag and Ag-related programs at Hartnell College presented by Dr. Zahi Atallah and Molly Lewis. A presentation on air quality by Richard Stedman, Air Pollution Control Officer. A presentation on custom farm equipment fabrication by Peter de Groot, Engineer with Valley Fabrication. A tour of the USDA Agriculture Research Station. A tour of the Alisal Campus provided by Dr. Steve Triano, Hartnell College Ag Professor. A tour of Floricultura in South County, a Danish company growing orchids (provided by Don Howell, General Manager). A tour of a pilot research project on a farm in South County that is studying ways to treat runoff water that is full of nitrates (provided by Dr. Marc Los Huertos, professor at CSU, Monterey Bay). The number of unemployed is 22,400, down 5,600 from 28,000 in March 2013 and down 3,900 compared to April 2012. Seven cities throughout Monterey County had unemployment rates less than 8%; and five cities had rates between 12.8 – 19.2%. The City of Gonzales’ unemployment rate of 19.2% is the highest in the County, followed by King City at 16.9%, Greenfield at 15.7% and Salinas at 14.1%. Of the unincorporated areas of the County, Chular’s unemployment rate is 26.0%, followed by San Ardo at 23.1%, Moss Landing at 22.2%, Las Lomas at 21.6%, San Lucas at 20.5% and Castroville at 19.1%.
