June 21, 2013 Mission Statement: Hartnell College provides the leadership and resources to ensure that all students shall have equal access to a quality education and the opportunity to pursue and achieve their goals. We are responsive to the learning needs of our community and dedicated to a diverse educational and cultural campus environment that prepares our students for productive participation in a changing world. 1. Electrician Apprenticeship Program Holds Graduation I was the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony for electrician apprentices held at the Monterey Hyatt Hotel on June 7, 2013. Board of Trustees members Demetrio Pruneda, Ray Montemayor, and William Freeman also attended the event. In partnership with Hartnell College, the Tri-County Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) is a jointly administered program by the Monterey Bay California Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Graduates, President Lewallen, HCCD Board Members, and officials of IBEW. Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 234. The JATC covers the jurisdiction of SantaCruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties and is the only federally and state registered electrical apprenticeship program located in the Monterey Bay area. The JATC administers a five year electrical apprenticeship program. Indentured apprentices work for a signatory electrical contractor during the day earning a wage in addition to attending school in Castroville two nights a week. The apprenticeship school year begins in September and completes in May. It is a five year program. The Tri-County Electrical JATC also provides continuing education for Journeymen Wiremen who work as Electricians in the Monterey Bay area. 2. Hartnell College New Media Center Hosts "Upload Your Future" Event On Saturday, June 15, I attended the "Upload Your Future" event, a free, one-day event that was open to the community and was full of information on how to leverage technology to find jobs, facilitate businesses, and better children’s education. The event was specifically focused on introducing the technology essentials of the 21st century in a family-friendly environment. Hands-on learning stations and various demonstrations provided entertaining learning opportunities. Community organizations participated that offer free and/or low-cost technologyrelated services. The Monterey County Tech Mobile and the Salinas Public Library mobile unit participated as well. The ultimate goal of the event was to promote internet adoption and to provide information about current technologies that will allow our community members to thrive at home or work. The short animated feature "New Horizons for a Little Planet" was premiered. This animated film was produced by youth participating in Hartnell College pathways programs. Check out some of the work at the following links. Monterey-Salinas Transit "Free Fare Zone" Benefits Hartnell College Students I am pleased to present some updated information on student utilization of the Monterey-Salinas Transit services. The "Free Fare Zone" has clearly been a successful partnership. There was a 27% increase in boardings when comparing September-April 2011-12 with September-April 2012-13. Recently, Dr. Romero Jalomo and I met with Carl Sedoryk, General Manager/CEO of MST, because the agreement between our organizations expires in July. We were able to successfully finalize a new agreement that includes adding King City to the "Free Fare Zone" for Page 3 our students. The new agreement will be brought before the Board of Trustees for consideration at its July, 2, 2013 meeting. 4.
