MINUTES
FEBRUARY 4, 2013
Present: Dean Connie Foster, Deana Groves, Brian Coutts, Timothy Mullin,
Haiwang Yuan, Eric Fisher, Bryan Carson, Jennifer Wilson and Jan Renusch
Minutes: The January 14, 2013, minutes were approved on a motion by Deana
Groves and a second by Haiwang Yuan.
Dean’s Report: Connie announced that the agenda be changed to present reports
in alphabetical order by area.
-Connie and Jack Montgomery attended the SAALCK meeting on Friday, January
18. Jack advised Connie on several collection policies.
-Tammera Race is the Senate rep on the Student Research Council and will now
also serve as the rep for University Libraries until the end of the academic
year.
-Information for the Colleges Showcases for RESEARCH Week is due February 8.
-Connie reported that at a recent CAD meeting there was discussion on
possibly flipping the Winter Term to the end of the spring semester. Regional
campus heads are now referred to as chancellors.
-Connie met with Craig Cobane of the Honors College regarding the Year of
Ecuador. A committee will be formed to tap into library resources such as the
Speaker Series, photos from Special Collections, bookmarks etc.
-Connie distributed copies of WKU Libraries Mission/Vision statement for the
Council to review, discuss and tweak the new values section. Connie will edit
the document for the council to look at again at the next meeting.
-Connie reminded everyone that staff evaluations are due in HR February 8.
-A memorial service for Terri Baker will be held March 4 at noon in the
Chandler Chapel on campus.
-May 31 is the deadline for American Library Design Showcase.
-Connie thanked everyone involved in the Commons opening on January 31.
Web & Emerging Technologies: Haiwang demonstrated the video he made of the
grand opening of the Commons at Cravens, which is accessible from the home
page.
-Haiwang reported that he convened the meeting of the Study Group of Newly
Acquired Library Materials appointed by Dean Foster. The group studied
several options and decided on the social media named Pinterest. Amanda is
working on a prototype with Shaden and will report back in two weeks.
Haiwang has placed the link to Computer Lab Traffic on the home page and the
links to the SAALCK Gift-in-Kind Policies and Collaborative Collection
Development Guide on appropriate pages on the Web.
Library Systems Office: Eric is researching problems with the Big Red card
printer readers. He gave highlights of the LSO:
DLPS: Resolved an issue for one staff member related to opening the OCLC.dat
file; updated and ran scans for one faculty laptop; updated Java on one staff
PC to correct an issue with the Able Bindery not working correctly; ran
updates on the ERC, Periodicals and VPAL PCs used for checking out patrons;
updated and ran scans on one faculty netbook for use at a Conference;
resolved a Symantec issue that was blocking internet access; installed a
printer for a faculty member; corrected a paper tray problem for a printer;
changed the default printer settings on the VPAL Reserve PC.
DLTS: Resolved an issue with the Voyager Cataloging Client module not opening
properly for one staff member; updated and ran scans on one faculty laptop;
helped staff member recover past calendar appointments; updated Java on two
staff PCs to correct an issue with the Able Bindery not working correctly;
installed MarcEdit on one staff PC to extract information needed for
cataloging; helped a staff member fix a browser issue; moved and installed a
spine label printer for a staff member; corrected a printer problem due to a
paper jam; relocated one staff PC.
DLSC: installed 3 printers and adjusted the settings for local Outlook email
folders for one staff member; imaged and installed software on a new staff
laptop; replaced a keyboard that was missing a riser leg.
Library Systems: The Voyager clients for the Owensboro staff PCs were
completed; added and removed users from AD; switched the print release
stations so that the newer printer was on the left and more likely to be
used; cleaned the monitors in the Commons before the opening; logged into and
checked the circulating laptops before the semester started to assure they
were in proper working order; setup for Commons at Cravens Grand Opening
(microphone and video on SDA TV); provided PowerPoint Presentation and Q/A
session for faculty and staff who will work at the Research Assistance desk.
Marketing: Jennifer mentioned Kristie is busy with the Macy’s Used Book Sale
this week. She said it is not too late to donate books. Jennifer has been
working on promotion for the Used Book Sale and the US Bank art show. She has
been helping Kristie with new letterhead for Book Fest so she is able to get
Meet the Authors mailings out.
-Jennifer discussed the need for a new Reference Guide. Jennifer has
suggested a committee look into a redesigned Reference Guide. She will be in
contact with Brian Coutts to form a small group.
-She also mentioned she will be contacting the Marketing Department in
Athletics to see if they would be interested in having athletes highlighted
in library promotions similar to the Canadian campaign she presented last
spring.
-Brian Coutts asked about an ad in the paper regarding the upcoming speaker
and Jennifer said there would be an advertisement promoting the event with
the speaker change as well.
Grants/Assessment: Bryan reported on the creation of a faculty committee to
help staff information fairs and panels. Bryan will chair the committee,
which will consist of Allison Day, Lisa Miller, the Saturday librarian (Laura
DeLancey), and a librarian to be named this week from DLTS. The committee
will share information fairs and panels for MASTERPLAN; the Academic
Transitions Program (A.T.P.), when incoming WKU students register for their
classes, get their student ID, have their email turned on, etc.; and the
Focus on Western and Preview Day events for prospective students.
-Bryan reported that a faculty member from the doctoral program inquired
about having doctoral dissertations included in Proquest Dissertations &
Theses. There has been some correspondence between Connie and the head of the
doctoral program about this. Connie will talk with the new head of Graduate
Studies.
-Bryan reported on the last meeting of the University Research Council. He
urged the LLC to spread the word about a new grant available for intercollege and inter-university research collaborations, the "Interdisciplinary
Research & Creative Activities Program" (iRCAP). A faculty-all email went out
last week about this opportunity.
-At the University Research Council meeting, Bryan brought up the issue of
having final reports, presentations, and articles from the FacultyUndergraduate Student Engagement program (FUSE) archived and disseminated via
TopSCHOLAR. He also discussed using TopSCHOLAR as a platform to archive and
disseminate final technical reports from external grants. The University
Research Council supported both suggestions.
-Bryan has been working with Wayne Pope and his committee to identify
speakers for the music series. Wayne suggested that it be held in the new
Music Rehearsal Hall, which has good equipment. The dates of the programs are
as follows:
March 19, April 2, April 9, April 16, April 23, April 30 at 7 pm.
Department Reports:
DLPS: Brian reported that there will be a memorial service for Therese Baker,
who died of a heart attack in December, at the WKU Chapel at noon on March 4.
Sean Kinder is handling the arrangements.-Far Away Places - John Dizgun,
Assistant Director, KIIS, will talk about “Buenos Aires: City of Immigrants”
on Thursday, February 14 at 7:00 pm at Barnes & Noble. John has made frequent
trips to Argentina which was the focus of his PhD and most recently led a
study abroad there last summer.-Kentucky Live!- “Patti’s 1880’s Settlement
Restaurant” - Chip Tullar, owner of the iconic restaurant will talk about the
restaurant founded by his mother on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00 pm at
Barnes & Noble. A review of his mother’s classic “Miss Patti’s Cookbook” will
appear in the Daily News on Sunday, February 17.-ProQuest Newsstand - This
core newspaper database includes international, national and regional papers,
such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Washington
Post, The Guardian, El Norte, Jerusalem Post, and South China Morning Post.
We also have coverage of the 85 Gannett newspapers through Newsstand,
including Louisville Courier-Journal, the Nashville Tennessean, and the
Indianapolis Star.-DLTS Department Head Search - The committee will meet
later this week to review applications.-Owensboro Campus Librarian Search Three finalists have been selected for on campus interviews.-Coordinator,
Visual & Performing Arts Library - Kath Pennavaria will be the new VPAL
Coordinator effective July 1, 2013. Michael Franklin has been appointed
Acting Supervisor effective January 2, 2013.-Charles Smith’s newest book
Alfred Russel Wallace’s Travel Diary 1886-1887: the North American Lecture
Tour was published January 1, 2013 by SIRI Scientific Press in London.
DLTS: Deana reported that the Electronic Resources Librarian search committee
met and narrowed the candidate pool to five. Next, phone interviews will be
conducted to narrow the list to the three candidates who will be invited to
campus for full interviews.
-Staff annual reviews have been completed and will be submitted to HR this
week.
-Reach Week information: Wednesday, March 20, 7 pm at Van Meter Sarah Vowell
is the keynote speaker. She will present “An Evening with Sarah Vowell,”
Topic will be readings/discussion of her two most recent books (Unfamiliar
Fishes and The Wordy Shipmates). Dr. Paul Simmons, clinical professor, School
of Medicine at the University of Louisville, is the featured Sigma Xi
speaker. Saturday, March 23, in Gary Ransdell Hall Room 1074, Dr. Simmons
will present the distinguished Sigma XI lecture on “Intelligent Design: Is
this the End of Evolution?”. Tammera Race will be sending an email to invite
faculty and staff to volunteer as judges for the student research conference
on Saturday, March 23rd. Additional information and the volunteer

DLSC: Timothy reported that Allison Day is now using LibAnalytics to count
their services. Prior to LibAnalytics November-December 2012 – 13;
Post LibAnalytics – January 2013 - 95
-Nancy Richey will be giving a presentation at the WCPL in their Cabin Fever
Speaker Series Tuesday February 26 at 6:00 pm. Nancy also had an article
published in the February SOKY happenings titled “Beginning African American
Genealogy Research” and will be offering a free class at the WCPL on the
subject.
-Nancy and Sue Lynn McDaniel will have an article published in American
Libraries on digitizing special collections.
-Nancy will present a paper on “Chasing Cousin Emmy: One Librarian’s
Adventure” at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association
March 27-30.
-Christy Spurlock created a class in Museum Theatre in conjunction with the
Theatre Department. Christy also created a faculty resource web page.
