POLONIUS: WHAT DO YOU READ, MY LORD? HAMLET: WORDS, WORDS, WORDS. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. HAMLET, ACT II SCENE II September 2015 Vol. 2 Iss. 1 Welcome Back, ND! We hope your break was filled with laughter and relaxation, and that you’re ready for a new academic start! We would like to welcome back our returning staff and students and offer a warm “Hello!” to all our new community members. This year the library will be bringing you trusted e-resources, great magazine articles, and a giant selection of books, all of which are available to our staff and students. Feel free to seek out Ms. Corbett (your teacher librarian) or Ms. Mallen (your library technician) in the library for more information. In addition, we would like to welcome Ms. Good as our new library monitor! WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH SEPTEMBER 7 Labour Day – School Closed We look forward to an amazing year with you, ND! LIBRARY NEWS GETTING INTO THE READING GROOVE Getting geared up for a new year of school work can be daunting. If you’re missing the lounging and relaxation time, the library has just the thing for you! It’s important for us returning to school to maintain a balance between academics and entertainment. Magazine articles are the perfect bite-size length to leave you with enough time to finish your homework. As we move towards shorter and shorter means of communication (ahem, Twitter), magazine articles are a great way to keep your brain engaged, informed, and entertained! The ND Library has a wide range of awesome magazines about sports, pop culture, Canadian issues, history, and so much more. Part of the library program this year will be a Top Twenty List of must-read articles each month, which will be made available on our website and as an email blast to staff. Check out our top pick for September, featured in Mental Floss and written by Camille Dodero “The Boy Who Saved Batman.” Don’t let the title fool you, it’s not just a story of reviving a dying superhero brand; it’s also the story of how perseverance can make childhood dreams a reality. BORROWING MATERIAL Staff and students are welcome to begin borrowing material from the library NOW! Students can use last year’s ND student card (for returning students), or this year’s schedule (for all students). Books can be borrowed for two weeks, while magazines can be borrowed for one week. For more details about our policies, check out page 16 in your student agendas, or ask Ms. Mallen or Ms. Corbett in the library! We look forward to another great year of awesome speakers, engaging events, and community outreach! Page 1 of 2 THE BACK PAGE NOTES IN THE MARGIN FEATURED REVIEW If I Ever Get Out Of Here by Eric Ganswroth STUDENT WIFI ACCESS Follow the story of Lewis "Shoe" Blake, who deals with the joys and hardships of living on the Tuscarora Indian reservation in 1975. When the new white kid at school, George Haddonfield, is nice to him, Shoe isn’t sure what to make of it. As their friendship grows, Shoe finds himself lying to keep the truth of the reservation a secret from George. This story deals with the economic, racial, and political tensions of Native life, and how these tensions affected friendships and school yards. This is a great novel filled with plenty of pop cultural references, fascinating historical context, and a beautiful tale of friendship and acceptance. It’s finally coming!! Students are scheduled to be able to access the wifi network on October 1st! This date is still subject to change, but we are hoping all students will be able to BYOD and log on to the network in early October. Verified login information will be required by all users. More information about accessing the wifi will become available as the date nears. ON DISPLAY THIS MONT H Summer Reads and Graphic Novels GALORE! Keep the summer going with some of our favourite reads and new manga! On the upper level, check out The Princess Diaries Series or Walter Dean Myers urban hit Dopesick. The newest release from Eric Walters, The Rule of Three, is a great option if you’ve finished another favourite of ours, Ready Player One. If fiction isn’t your thing, we’ve displayed some new nonfiction titles sure to get your brain working. Also, our lower level display is all about our new and best graphic works! With classic titles like Dragonball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist alongside modern hits like Attack on Titan, Deathnote, and My Love Story, these highly visual reads are the perfect complement to your reading repertoire. Come scope out the displays and feel free to borrow anything you see! REEL BOOKS Another fan favourite from renowned teen author John Green, Paper Towns (published 2008) was released as a film this summer. Quentin (Q, to his friends) lives an otherwise boring life until one night the elusive, beautiful, and downright enigmatic Margo Spiegelman climbs through his window and convinces Q to help her execute an eleven part plan to exact revenge on those who have hurt her throughout high school. The next day, Q discovers Margo is missing, and so begins an epic and obsessive road trip, guided by clues left by Margo, to find the girl who’s made him feel alive. At once haunting and hilarious, Paper Towns is sure to be a hit! NEW BOOKS (A SMALL SELECTION) The library purchased a plethora of new material at the end of last year, so while we get those titles ready for the shelves, we would like to invite staff and students to help us make our collection even better! If you have a book (or magazine) suggestion, please come down to the library and let us know! Maybe it’s the next best seller or the final book in your favourite series. Perhaps it’s the perfect book for your history course or English essay. Come to the circulation desk, and ask to add a book to our wish list! Maybe next month, your pick will be featured in our New Books section (right here!) AUTHORIZE CLUB This year, the Authorize Reading and Writing Club will begin in January. The focus of Authorize is to encourage and support readers and writers in their personal reading/writing goals. Authorize will also be hosting its third annual Tall Tale Evening in late April of next year. Students who would like to join the club, learn more about it, or have a question regarding Tall Tale Evening are encouraged to speak with Ms. Mallen in the library. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Interested in writing a review of your favourite book, a blurb about an exciting school event, or a great book-to-film adaptation? The Bookmark is the place for you! The library invites all staff and students to submit any of these three segments of The Bookmark for consideration for publication in upcoming editions. Not sure what to write, but still want to contribute? Speak with Ms. Corbett or Ms. Mallen for more info on how to help out! Page 2 of 2
