Volume 1, Issue 1 December 14, 2010 Club Sports Fall 2010 Newsletter A M e s s a g e Season’s Greetings! I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we quickly approach the end of a great fall semester, I want to take this opportunity to update you on all of the exciting changes and accomplishments taking place with our Club Sports program. As we started this year, the university experienced its second largest first year class in the history of the school. As a result, Club Sports also experienced an great influx of new members and clubs. The Club Sports Council approved 2 new clubs, Swimming and Triathlon, and the overall participation increased 9% to 715 members in 29 clubs! On the competition side, many clubs have achieved new levels of success. In late October, fielding a team with its fair share of rookies, the Women’s Rugby club won its first Division III championship, beating an undefeated Wittenburg squad! During the same time frame, the Men’s Rugby club advanced to the Division II playoffs one year after winning just one game in the same division. Also in October, the Xavier Men’s Volleyball Club brought home a 1st place in the Silver Division from the University of Dayton Flyer Classic. The Equestrian team garnered Reserve High Point Team honors, a first for the club, competing at Midway College in November and, bolstered by a new ring which has enhanced their training regimen, Xavier Boxing started off the year 2-0 against the University of Kentucky. Finally, XU Crew was accepted to compete in the prestigious Head of Charles Regatta in Boston, the largest 2-day regatta in the United States. Stepping away from competition, our clubs have been equally successful in f r o m t h e D i r e c t o r the community. Through their commitment to the mission of Xavier University, clubs and their members have participated in volunteer service projects throughout the semester such as the Free Store Food Bank Canned Food Drive, landscaping for Habitat for Humanity, participating in a prom at the Vineyard Church for students with special needs, working at the St. Francis Soup Kitchen, XU Community Action Day, Reggae Run, Adopt-A-Highway, and competing with and against inmates in volleyball at the Luther Luckett Correctional Facility in Kentucky. As a result of their efforts, Club Sport members have contributed over 300 hours of service back to the community so far this year. On the financial side, the clubs have been hard at work raising money to assist with their operational needs and goals. To date, their endeavors have resulted in over $83,000 raised. Along with the initial allocation of $130,000 from SGA, clubs have had access to over $213,000 so far this year! Accompanying these club successes have been some exciting developments on the administrative side of Club Sports. Dr. Kathleen Simons, Associate Provost for the division of Student Life and leadership and Dr. Luther Smith, Dean of Students kicked off our beginning of the year meeting, which was attended by 175 club officers, advisors and coaches. In a move to foster community and a little competition, the annual ―Club of the Year‖ categories have now been expanded to include 3 categories-Men’s, Women’s, and Coed. Winners are determined through a tally system in which points are earned in a variety of categories. The point standings are updated on a monthly basis through- out the academic year with the winners of each category receiving a $500 award to be added to their budget for the following year. Additionally, clubs may also win a ‖Best Fundraising Club‖ and ―Most Improved Club‖ award which also come with monetary prizes. In perhaps the biggest news, the Club Sports program will be rolling out a new website! The site is a new, updated, athletic look for the 29 clubs and provides a one-stop shop for the current and potential club athletes, alumni, fans and supporters. Managed by their student members, the club’s web pages have the ability to create and edit rosters, player and coach bios (along with pictures), as well as schedules and results. Members will be able to write and promote news articles about their clubs, list player stats, and add video and photo content to their sites. Additionally, clubs will have the ability to connect their websites to their Facebook and Twitter pages, creating an online communication network for their members and followers! Finally, all club sites have a recruitment page in which prospective students and/or members can notify the club of their interest in joining, creating an opportunity for the clubs to be proactive in their member recruitment! As you can see, there are exciting developments occurring with our clubs this year and this is just the beginning. As we continue to grow and achieve our goals, the club sports program is looking forward to a bright future! Thanks for your continued support! Happy Holidays, James Alexander Assistant Director of Recreational Sports P a g e 2 C l u b S p o r t s F a l l 2 0 1 0 B o x i n g The Boxing Club has improved by leaps and bounds in the last year. Our roster has grown substantially from last year’s numbers, resulting in overall enrollment, as well as the number of competitors has increased about threefold. This year’s group shows a lot of promise with a fresh group of highly gifted and motivated young fighters leading the way into competitions in the second semester. Much credit for this improvement is due to the aggressive offseason promotional efforts of a motivated and ambitious core of officers, including Andrew Gallo, President, Ian Moore, Vice President, Zeke Solomon, Secretary, Iso Tidjani, Treasurer, and Alex Horan, Chief Safety Officer. In other exciting news, the Boxing Club has replaced its fight ring, which had been in commission for the last 30+ years with a brand new floor-standing ring. This is following the old ring’s unfortunate collapse during practice early last season. The new ring is a source of pride for the club in general and will afford competitors the invaluable technical and spatial skills that they would otherwise miss out on when sparring without the confines of the ropes. The club has been hard at work breaking in the new equipment and with it, looks to put on at least one or two live shows in Schmidt Fieldhouse this year to showcase its talent. A potential fight night on December 3rd is in the works that would feature our young fighters as the main event. Since none of the new fighters would be eligible for NCBA registration until the second semester when more competitions will take place, it is important to us to reward their hard work in the first semester by giving them the opportunity to compete in front of their friends and family here at Xavier before we break for the holidays. F o o t b a l l The 2010 Xavier Football season started out with new Head Coach James Carty, former defensive coordinator of the Musketeers. He brought a staff of former and new coaches to the team as they tried to improve on the 5-4 record from last year and looked to win their third Midwestern Club Football Conference Championship in 4 years. Xavier Football kicked off the season with 26 players in blue and white on a Sunday night, September 12, against Hanover JV. The Muskies went on to win the opener 28-22. A week later they traveled up to Columbus to face Ohio State’s club team losing 26-20 while also losing their quarterback for the year due to injury. The Muskies traveled to Illinois the following week to play Southern Illinois – Edwardsville with a depleted roster of only 22 men. After going down 13-0 in the first five minutes and losing 4 more players to in- jury by half the remaining 18 Musketeers battled back to win 18-13, digging deep against the odds to get the win. After a bye week, they played Miami (OH)’s team still with a small D a n c e The Xavier University Dance Team, currently ranked 5th in the nation officially began their 2010-2011 season at NDA Dance Camp at the University of Louisville this past August. The team did exceptionally well, receiving a silver paid bid to nationals, 1st place in their division for their team dance performance, and a silver award for their game day performance. The team also received the Most Spirited Award, which roster. They lost the game 49-0 to drop their record to 2-2. The following week it was decided by the team to cancel the remainder of the season. They started out with a small roster to kick off the season, and with mounting injuries the risk for further injuries was only heightened. Although it was a very tough decision it was in the best interest of their health to sit out the rest of the year. They have already started planning for 2011 and are hitting the recruiting trails harder than ever to field a more sufficient roster. Look forward to seeing Musketeer Football back on the field in Fall 2011! During the weekend of November 13th, V o l u m e 1 , I ss u e 1 P a g e M e n ’ s After a losing first appearance in Division II play last year, the Xavier Men’s Rugby Club sat down and made the necessary preparations for the upcoming year. The club committed themselves to becoming the fittest team in all of all Division II teams in Ohio, becoming Playoff Qualifiers, and taking the necessary steps for the preservation of our Club. Xavier Rugby definitely hit the ground running…literally. With an unprecedented pre-season camp that lasted a grueling ten days in 95° weather, the club made it through conditioning, rucking, tackling, scrumming, and passing drills. As if this was not enough, the club received the help of Cori Dayton, Xavier Athletics Strength and Conditioning Assistant Coach, in the weight room everyday as well as running two miles as a team every morning. The club carried their new work ethic into their practices, R u g b y and by the time their season opener came along against University of Cincinnati, the boys in blue were ready. The new fitness level of the entire team truly showed in the first game against UC, where at half time the club was up by only a try. However, at the start of the second half of the game, Xavier’s fitness shone through as the Xavier scored back-to-back-to-back tries in a mat- ter of five minutes, and Xavier went on to beat UC 36 to 22. From there Xavier carried out a 2-2-1 record. However, Xavier’s fitness was responsible for pushing Xavier past Dayton in the standings as they scored more tries out of any other team in their league, and thus giving them the extra points that placed them in 3rd place in their league. Xavier’s 3rd place standing earned them their first playoff bid in recent memory’s history. Xavier suffered two tough losses in the playoffs, to Michigan State in the first round and Slipper Rock University in the second round after an overtime period and penalty kicks. Regardless of the club’s losses at the playoffs, the club managed to complete all their season goals by being the fittest club in Division II play, qualifying for the playoffs, and developing their roster from a 25-manteam to nearly a 45-man-team. B a s e b a l l Dear XUCB enthusiasts, The 2010 fall season has come and gone, with much to discuss as the Muskies continue to improve the foundation of their team. Hopes for the season are high due to a large influx of fresh talent, by far the largest class that the club has ever seen. As of the end of the fall, the roster is stacked with 33 young studs, 15 of which are just tiny freshmen looking to find their way through the maze that is Xavier Club Baseball. Over the fall, the team played nine games, going 4-5, a relatively respectable record considering the team’s history of terrible fall seasons. The club started 2-2 being swept by Miami (OH) and the taking both games of a doubleheader against Cincinnati. XUCB then hosted the second annual Xavier Club Baseball Fall Classic at beautiful Athletes in Action in Xenia, OH. Despite winning the tournament in 2009, the ball club dropped all three games against SIU- 3 Edwardsville, Loyola-Chicago, and Dayton by a combined seven runs, playing 24 innings total. The club rounded out the season with two big conference wins against Northern Kentucky to grab some needed momentum going into the spring. Some players that stood out this fall season were returning members P. Falvey and J. Antoncic who continued to dominate the stat sheet in terms of hitting, leading the team in hits and RBI’s respectively. Junior Bill Hoerst established himself as a legitimate closer with some gutsy performances against Cincinnati. As far as the youngsters go, Freshmen phenom Connor Richards exploded onto the scene by leading the team in batting average, hitting an astounding .800 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. Danny Douaire, and side-winding pitcher from Chicago, also added some much needed depth to XUCB’s depleted pitching staff going 2-0 in the fall with a 1.27 ERA. XUCB looks to forge ahead and win their division this year for the first time in club history with some stellar prospects and clutch play from veterans. Their spring season begins the second week of March as the team will head down to Tampa, FL for the sixth consecutive year for the National Club Baseball Association’s Spring Showcase. P a g e 4 C l u b M e n ’ s Xavier Men’s Club Soccer started off the fall season on a high note by adding several up and coming freshmen to an already talented, veteran squad. We also moved on from our previous coach Scott Suter and hired an experienced coach in Aaron Hunter, who promised to bring a new style of play and attitude to the team. The season was highlighted by several key wins within our conference including an undefeated and top-ranked Miami of Ohio team at home and conference rival Wright State away. These, coupled S p o r t s F a l l 2 0 1 0 S o c c e r with non-conference wins against IUPUI, Purdue and Mount Saint Joseph, culminated in an overall record of 6-3-6 with key loses to intercity rival Cincinnati and conference opponent Bowling Green. Following the fall season, the team participated in the organization of the Run like Hell charity run that was held in Norwood only a block away from Xavier’s campus. The team helped set up tables and booths, as well as helped stock vending areas with beverages for participants. In addition to participating in the charity event, the team practices twice a week in preparation for the winter indoor soccer session in January as well as the upcoming spring season where the team hopes to travel to one of several spring soccer tournaments around the country. The team also hopes to host several friendly games against well known conference rivals during the course of the spring season. which could lead to better exposure for the club in Cincinnati as well as provide valuable learning experiences and opportunities for the new freshmen. These events together, with the upcoming season, will provide an exciting end for the team’s graduating seniors as well as a rounded view of competitive collegiate club soccer for both current and incoming freshmen. There are several projects and fundraising opportunities in the works for the team G y m n a s t i c s Club Gymnastics has had a great start this year. We have sixteen participants. This year we have changed gyms to Queen City Gymnastics, and we have added an additional practice. We are currently having one conditioning practice and two gym practices per B a s s Fall 2010 has marked the first semester on Xavier University’s campus with a Bass Fishing Team. We are proud to have one of five bass fishing teams in the entire state of Ohio, us being the only club south of Columbus. While the fall was spent mainly organizing the club, we are excited to start competing in the spring. We have not been able to get on the wa- week. The main season for gymnastics is in the spring. This semester we have been focusing on improving skills and getting ready to compete in a few months. We have had one meet so far. We competed at Southern Illinois University on November 6th. At the meet, we took nine gymnasts. The meet was very successful. Sophomore Hannah Black placed 3rd on both floor and all-around. Sophomore Brianne Lehnig placed 2nd on beam. Next semester we are competing at Ohio State University and Eastern Michigan University. We will also be competing at Nationals which will be held in Richmond, VA this year. Club Gymnastics has been working very hard throughout this semester to get ready for Nationals. We have also increased our fundraising and service hours from last year. Overall, this semester has been very successful for Club Gymnastics. F i s h i n g ter as a team, however we have been active in acquiring sponsorships. Companies such as Dobyns Rods and Dixie Marine have offered the club discounts on their products. We will have several intra-squad outings as well as competing on the national level in the FLW college fishing circuit. FLW tournament locations include Lake Champlain between New York and Vermont, 1000 Islands Lake in New York, the Potomac River in Maryland, and Lake Erie. While we are sending experienced anglers to these tournaments, our club is free to anyone with an interest in fishing. Once our season truly begins in the spring and into the summer, our club will be very busy with all of the exciting events we have planned. V o l u m e 1 , I ss u e 1 P a g e W o m e n ’ s What a fall season it’s been for Xavier’s Women’s Club Rugby Football Club! We started out the season with a pretty good number of recruits along with all the returnees of last year, and, even though that number began to dwindle as the season went on, our energy remained high the whole time. Our first game was against Wittenberg University. The contest resulted in a loss, but our only loss of the entire season. After beating Marshall University in West Virginia, the club continued it’s winning ways against the University of Kentucky, University of Dayton, and R u g b y Eastern Kentucky University, our biggest win of the season(73-0). The Women’s Rugby not only had a nearly undefeated season, but also made it to Division 3 semifinals for the first time in the team’s existence here at Xavier. We played our first playoff game against Ashland, Ohio, at Ashland. After playing in the frigid weather for 80 minutes, the Xavier Women’s Rugby team won handily, seemingly destined for the championship. The championship game was against Wittenberg, a chance for us to avenge our only loss of the season. So, as the underdogs, it was time for us to show how our hard work would pay off. The next weekend, the team travelled to Columbus to play again in the cold weather. The game was a rough and close one, with possession and tries going back and forth—but again, the Women’s team pulls off a win, becoming the top team in D-3. So, the club’s first time ever even being in playoffs, we earned our first D-3 championship. It was a successful season to say the least and we can’t wait to go out and defend our title! T e n n i s The Club Tennis team is posting a 1-2 record following a tournament at Ohio State University at the end of October. Opponents were Ohio State, Bowling Green State University, and Ohio University. Xavier defeated Ohio University 25 games to 21 with the matches consisting of men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Practices have moved indoors due to colder weather where the tennis team is gearing up for a tournament in early December at Miami University. Xavier will face Miami, Butler University, and the University of Dayton. The club hopes to improve our record with three road wins. With an abundance of freshmen and sophomores on the team, club tennis hopes to use this energy paired with the more experienced players to establish and maintain a winning record and year. W a t e r Water Polo competed in one tournament at UC in the fall and beat UC, Denison, and OSU winning the tournament. All of the teams played very well and this was the first tournament win for Xavier Water Polo. As well as competing in this tournament, every week Xavier and University of Cincinnati water polo clubs scrimmaged. This has been a great opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the P o l o sport. When Xavier was not scrimmaging with the University of Cincinnati, the practices focused on building strength and understanding the basics of the sports through drills. On December 12th Xavier is hosted a home tournament. Local teams from the area such as the University of Cincinnati and the squirrels plan on attending. This was a great relaxed environment to compete and have fun before the holidays. Xavier water polo is looking forward to the spring and competing in more tournaments. 5 P a g e 6 C l u b W o m e n ’ s Nancy Lopez once said, ―A competitor will find a way to win. Competitors take bad breaks and use them to drive themselves just that much harder. Quitters take bad breaks and use them as reasons to give up. It's all a matter of pride.‖ If referring to our wins and losses, it could be said that the Women’s Club Soccer team had a bit of a ―bad break‖ this season. Coming in second to last place in the league standings was a bit of a disappointment. However, this can be viewed in a positive light for two reasons: 1) We did not come in last. Thanks to in- S p o r t s F a l l 2 0 1 0 S o c c e r credible goals by Erin Coogan and Val Sloboda, XU came away with a victory against Bowling Green. 2) There is little room to go but up. We are confident that the team will use this season as an impetus to push themselves that much harder in the spring. We foresee the numbers of girls at practice skyrocketing. Before you know it, the Xavier Women’s Club Soccer team will be blowing the other teams out of the water, perhaps even the teams that approach their involvement like a varsity team and practice multiple times a day. Beyond our record, our season was anything but a ―bad break.‖ We had an incredible time volunteering at a special needs prom, shared in some team bonding, and handsdown had the best cheer in the league. Our favorite memories include stray dogs, back passes at practice, and suspicious referees. The memories will only continue this spring, and these memories are bound to include a few more W’s. S w i m m i n g Xavier University Swim Club has enjoyed a great first season with 23 people on its roster. Our first swim meet was at Ohio University on November 13th. About 14 students attended this meet, even though it was 3 hours away. Freshman, John Farkas placed first in the 50 backstroke. Other members of the team placed in the top 10 overall in their events and scored points for the team. XUSC placed 5th overall at the OU meet. Our second swim meet was a two-day affair at Miami of Ohio on November 20th and 21st. Club President David Albert placed first overall in the 25 breaststroke. All 15 members of the team competing in the meet made it to the finals in at least one of their events. The Xavier women’s team placed 7th out of 16 teams and the men’s team placed 10th out 16 teams. Overall as a team, XUSC placed 8th out of the 16 teams that were there. In the future, we plan to host a meet with Ohio State University at OSU. We also plan to compete against Dayton as well as another meet with OU and Miami. Earlier in the year, we had a fundraiser where we sold hot chocolate and cookies in Gallagher and also promoted another fundraiser planned for April, Kick It. The team raised about $200 from those two days. G o l f Club Golf began its fourth year with the biggest team in history; 36 golfers. The team competed in matches against Indiana University, University of Dayton, and University of Miami, going 1-4. Golfers also competed in two National Collegiate Club Golf Association events, one at Purdue University and the other in Tuscola, Illinois. The team captured fifth and sixth place finishes in the National Collegiate Club Golf events. Club golf will pick back up in March with matches against surrounding schools and two more National Collegiate Club Golf events. Fall Golf Highlights: Senior Michael Davis shot even par (72) against the University of Dayton at Yankee Trace Golf Course. Junior Justin Coop finished in the Top 10 golfers in the NCCGA event at Purdue University. Four members of the Club Golf team competed in the Rainbow Run for Distance for Dreams and took 2nd place. We also organized our big fundraiser, which includes selling raffle tickets to friends and family over Christmas break as well as the first two weeks of January. In the beginning of January we will draw names and the winner will win great prizes. Everything is going well for XUSC and we look forward to all the events for next semester. V o l u m e 1 , I ss u e 1 P a g e M e n ’ s The men’s Club Volleyball team has had a successful fall semester in a turn-around year for the club. After ending last year with only 6 committed members, the team has a new attitude, building a young team of 13 guys, 10 of which are freshmen and sophomores. With the funds we received at the beginning of the year we were able to purchase new balls and a ball cart, as well as pay for tournaments at Michigan State and Dayton. Recently, we learned Nationals will be held the first week of April in Houston, Texas and were able to purchase air travel in and out of Columbus for relatively cheap. On top of that our team has completed V o l l e y b a l l over 125 hours of service this semester. We have volunteered at events like the Cincinnati Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament, Reggae Run, XU Girl’s Club Volleyball tournament, and we were even lucky enough to travel to La Grange, Kentucky to volunteer by playing a prison men’s volleyball team creating an experience of a lifetime. In our first tournament this year, we came in 1st in the Silver Bracket at UD, then tied for 5th out of 28 teams at Michigan State’s annual Hardwood Classic in November. welcome too. Another big step we are trying to take is to establish an alumni system to keep in touch with all former players. If you would like any more information on the team, you can visit our brand new webpage at http:// www.xavier.edu/clubsports/volleyballmen/, follow us on Facebook, or email us at xumensvball@xavier.edu. Thank you to all our supporters and we look forward to a great spring semester. -Mike Czopek XUVBC President For the upcoming spring semester, we are looking to fundraise through apparel sales, Dominos buy one get one free cards, and hosting indoor and sand volleyball tournaments, not to mention donations are always S o f t b a l l Xavier Club Softball ended their fall season with a 7-5 record. They went 0-3 verse Miami University and 1-2 versus Ohio University, while accepting forfeits from both Indiana University and Eastern Kentucky University. Highlights of the season include three homeruns hit by Beth Heitker, Rachel Morgante, and Katelyn Pepper. Much of their success this season is contributed to their new coach, Jenni Meier. It has been a long time coming for the club to find a coach that is knowledgeable of the sport and helps them achieve their fullest potential as an individual and organization. They are excited to continue to improve and dominate next spring. With the end of the fall season, a couple of goodbyes are in order to Katelyn Pepper and Rachel Morgante. They will be greatly missed and will be hard to replace. Also, Xavier Club Softball had two fundraisers this season. The first was a Sunday bake sale, after the Bellarmine Chapel church services, which proved to be very successful. The second fundraiser was a cookout during Family Weekend which turned out to be better than expected. Upcoming events include volunteering for Redsfest on December 3rd and 4th and a Candygram fundraiser from December 6th-9th. As for the spring season, the girls are looking forward to one away tournament and their 3rd annual Muskie Mayhem home tournament. They will also be playing Ohio State University for their last league game. They cannot wait to start playing again, go Lady Muskies! Make sure to check out the new Club Sports Website! www.xavier.edu/ clubsports 7 P a g e 8 C l u b S p o r t s F a l l 2 0 1 0 C r e w Congratulations to the Xavier Rowing team who recently finished a successful fall season. The season included four regattas, for which we travelled from Tennessee to Massachusetts. The Columbus Fall Classic was the teams’ first race and took place in early October in Columbus Ohio. The team walked away from W o m e n ’ s The Xavier Women’s Club Volleyball team begins the year by building upon last year. Returners include sophomores Caity O’Shaughnessy, Abby Steinacker, Jill Parker, and Maggie Ogborne; junior Carol Bergman; seniors Tess Hackett and Megan Jacobs; and grad student Kati Wendlandt. The team is also growing with the addition of sophomores this race with one gold and one bronze metal boat. The next weekend was The Head Of The Ohio, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, where the team continued to build on its success with one gold and two bronze metal boats. Soon after, the team began to prepare for The Head Of The Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts. The team represented themselves and the school proudly as they raced against top teams in the biggest regatta in the world. Following the long road trip back from Boston, the team prepared for their final race, The Head Of The Hooch. This race was located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and fighting against not ideal conditions, the Xavier rowers faired well. The success of Xavier Crew through the fall season as well as the addition of a strong group of novice rowers definitely made the 2010 fall season unforgettable. V o l l e y b a l l Chelsea Sensibaugh, Margaret Hazlett, and Kellie Tekulve; and freshman Allyson Clifford and Christina Salmo. We also welcome our new coaches Dan Wanstrath who is currently the assistant coach at Thomas More College and senior Andrew Lonnen. The Women’s Club Volleyball team has started the year with three tournaments. We came in 4th at the October NKU tournament, 3rd at our home November tournament, and recently came in 18th place at the December Indiana tournament. Next semester we will prepare for end of the season tournaments with tournaments at UC, Miami, Ohio State, and Dayton. E q u e s t r i a n Xavier Equestrian showed up this season with their most successful fall semester yet. Seven skilled riders competed at Morehead State University the weekend of October 23rd earning a 4th place overall on Saturday, overcoming a fall, and a 5th place overall on Sunday out of 8 teams. Sophomore Alex Calvert pointed up to compete in the Novice division, which includes over-fences jumping classes. At the November 13-14th horseshow, the team co-hosted with Midway College by creating the program book for the weekend, moving jumps in the arena, and helping out where needed. The team also brought 8 equestrians to compete at this horseshow and placed 4th overall on Saturday. Fellow competitors commented to Coach Jim Arrigon how great it is to walk by the Xavier Equestrian Team and always see them smiling and laughing. Feeling as confident as ever and eager to prove themselves as poised horsewomen, Sunday the team placed 2nd overall, earning the title of Reserve High Point Team, having only been outpointed by the University of Kentucky. Sophomore Jenny Deighton earned a first place in her walk-trot class despite this being her first equestrian competition. Team president Ellen Davis could not be more proud of her accomplished riders who have dedicated themselves to the team and has high hopes for them at the Tournament of Champions Invitational in Virginia in January. V o l u m e 1 , I ss u e 1 P a g e 9 H o c k e y The Hockey team had a shaky start to the beginning of the season with an overtime loss to Northern Kentucky University. The next night they rallied back and got their revenge with a clutch goal scored by Patrick Riedy for an overtime win. Since the season opener, their record is 9-4-1. There have been highs and lows throughout the season but the team continues to overcome adversity and get wins. The team’s growth over the season is a true representation of the many leaders that set the tone on and off the ice. This year, the club hockey team signed two new coaches, head coach Tim Driscoll and assistant coach Chuck Sperrick. Coach Tim and Chuck have been great additions to our program; they have molded the team into better hockey players but more importantly well rounded athletes. Along with the coaches, our captains: Joe Bauer, Nate Han, and Malachi Henry have been leading our young team to wins. As the team enters winter break, they look forward to some rest, but also a time to get refocused on the games ahead. For more information on the team and game times, visit our website at www.xavier.ed/club sports and click on Ice Hockey. R u n n i n g The Running Club is off to another great semester this year and we hope to continue to expand the club to include more members and more activities. The Running Club meets 5 days of the week for runs in the morning and afternoon, depending on members’ schedules. We have participated in various races around the Cincinnati area this semester including the Reggae Run 5k, Run Like Hell 5k, the Nearly Naked Mile, and the Mason Half Marathon. Next semester, we will participate in the Flying Pig Marathon and Half Marathon, the NIRCA Midwest Track Gala, the Mercy Heart Mini Marathon & 10k, and the Little Ohio Track Meet. We will also be participating in Relay For Life and TOMS Day Without Shoes. We have runners of all different abilities, so whether you just want to stay in shape or want to run a marathon, come out and join us for run! W o m e n ’ s The Women's Club Lacrosse team ended fall ball with a winning record. The team added to its coaching staff by hiring an additional coach with college-level playing and coaching experience. The team has already seen big improvements in competition with regional teams this fall. The team traveled to Indianapolis and L a c r o s s e Dayton, and also hosted a play day here at Xavier. The official nine-game season will start in the spring. Division opponents include area rivals Dayton, Miami, and UC. The team will travel to St. Louis for a weekend of play to finish out the regular season. Women's lacrosse hopes to make it to the league playoffs for the second time this season, and after a promising fall, members and coaches are all excited for that possibility. As this came as a surprise for some at Xavier, work began to get a club in motion at Xavier in early September 2009. The idea of a Paintball Club at Xavier was met with excitement by the student body. Club Paintball was ready to get the ball rolling for spring semester 2010, but we had to clear a few hurdles first. We were happy to engage in education and clarifica- tion regarding the sport of Paintball at Xavier. Club Paintball’s advisor, Bob Ahuja was instrumental in navigating the potential obstacles with establishing the sport of Paintball at Xavier University. There were misconceptions about the sport believed to conflict with the identity and beliefs of Xavier University. After a few months of working with Xavier, the misconceptions of the sport of paintball were dispelled. Paintball gained the acceptance of the Xavier Leadership and in April of 2010 Paintball was approved by the council of Club Sports. C y c l i n g The club is also a resource for individuals who would just like to get out and ride. New members are welcome, regardless of experience level. In the Spring semester of 2011 we plan on competing in a full season of USA Cycling collegiate races, and we hope to be eligible to make a return trip to Collegiate National Championships in May. Xavier Cycling is a relatively new club sport, so we are still getting are feet planted into the Xavier system. This year we have worked with lots of new riders on developing their skills as riders. The team is a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Cycling Conference (MWCCC) and participates in mountain bike and cyclocross races during the fall, and road races during the spring. M a r t i a l This semester for Martial arts was a rebuilding semester for the club. With only a few members returning from the previous year, we had to get our name out among the Xavier students. Many people came to try the club and we got a few members in the process. We were able to add a new discipline to our club, Koryu Bujutsu, which is of Japanese origin. It focuses on mind, body, and full self as does Teak- A r t s wondo, (our already present discipline) but it incorporates more grappling and throwing. Sempei Raymond requested that we consider this option during the summer, and it has given the club a wider scope, and we also hoped that it would increase appeal across the Xavier community. And as of right now, Koryu Bujutsu has members that do not participate in taekwondo, and vice versa with Taekwondo. We have been trying to work on club fluidity - as in trying to smooth the transition with this new discipline. Things have promise, and I hope by next semester we will be able to be more active as a club. M e n ’ s The Xavier Men’s Lacrosse team finished its fall season with a record of 0-2. Although it may have been disappointing, it gave the team something to build on when the spring season approaches. It was evident that the team had to work on conditioning and both offensive and defensive communication. The team has found it has a very strong and physical defense led by Sophomores Charley Jones and Dan Hellmann, as well as Junior Matt Kaplun. The Musketeers attack L a c r o s s e was led by Sophomore Sean Cahill along with Freshmen standouts Mac Reed and Jack Severt, while the midfield was led by Sophomores Michael Louque and Peter Manca, along with Junior LSM Tyler Haffler The team started out the fall season by hosting Lousiville in late-September, where the Musketeers were defeated in the closing minutes at a final score of 10-9. The team showed much improve- ment over years past in the minds of club faculty advisor John LaRocca, and Xavier students who witnessed the game. In early October, the Musketeers traveled to Huntington, West Virginia to face Marshall University in what turned out to be a disappointing game. The Musketeers lost 6-4, and it was obvious that the team had much to work on to be a threat in the spring. U l t i m a t e This semester for the Club Ultimate Team was huge in terms of adding new players. Fifteen new people joined the club and have stuck with it through the semester. These new players are improving quickly and will be a huge addition come our Championship Season next semester. Also Chris Place and Tristan Nighswander were named the Captains of the team this year and look forward to leading this team during the upcoming season. Xavier Ultimate traveled to multiple tournaments this semester and the best result was at the Denison Ultimate Tournament. Xavier went 6-1 for the tournament and finished 3rd overall out of 24 teams. On the way to finishing third Xavier Ultimate beat Cincinnati, Ohio State, and Ohio Northern. This was a great result for the team and they are looking forward to building on this next semester. T r i a t h a l o n Having the opportunity to start a new club is always an exciting prospect. We have a chance to form something that we’ll not only enjoy, but also spread our interests out to others and possibly awaken an excitement in them. The idea of a new of a new club brings joy to us. At the same time, forming a new club brings many challenges to those creating it. Whether it’s going through new logistical work that we aren’t familiar with, or just trying to form a practice schedule, each little step can feel like a huge hurdle. Even though it has been challenging experience so far, we are still very excited to have such an opportunity as this. Triathlon club has 10 members at the moment. We have also started the paperwork process of getting a coach. Since all of this has been occurring we have been pleased with the work that has actually been put in. We plan to get practices really up and going at the beginning of next semester. With a new coach, and the possibility of belonging to a conference starting in the new year, we hope that people will begin to be active within the club and be able to say with pride that they participate in Xavier the Triathlon Club. The team also participated in the men’s foil and saber matches as well as women’s foil and sabre. They went up against nine other teams including, Oberlin, Bowling Green State University, and, of course, OSU. Xavier’s Fencing Team is extraordinary in the fact that it accepts and trains new fencers each year. In the first two sessions, the new fencers are introduced to fencing’s footwork. By the third session, the fencers begin to use a foil. This is because foil fencing is the most focused on swordplay, which allows the new fencers to develop blocking and deflecting skills. A foil is also the lightest of the three weapon options (foil, epee, and sabre). After the new fencers learn to use the foil, they are able to choose their second weapon, and eventually work on the third. At the end of training with all three weapons the new fencers pick their weapon of choice. The team is also very excited to welcome one of their newest recruits, their new head coach, Bob Lehner. He attended Xavier and has been fencing since 2005. Sabre is his weapon of choice. He and his team are looking forward to their two upcoming tournaments at Case Western University and Notre Dame. 1 2
