Solution Overview
Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft Cloud
Platform: Backup as a Service
BENEFITS
For Cloud Providers
 Rapid solution deployment and service
provisioning.
 Incremental revenue streams including
archiving, encryption, e-discovery,
security, and compliance services.
 Simplified integration and monetization
of value-added services.
Deploy new services confidently and quickly
with Cisco® Cloud Architecture for the
Microsoft Cloud Platform backup as a service
(BaaS).
Bringing new services to market can be a challenge. It requires
a close eye on costs and careful management of the complex
integration of infrastructure and application layers. Cloud
providers need to enhance speed to market, improve cloud
service performance, enable as-a-service monetization, and
For Cloud Provider Customers
 Low CapEx requirements and reduced
OpEx with “pay as you grow”
capabilities.
 SLA-driven solutions to meet recovery
time objectives (RTO) and recovery
point objectives (RPO).
 Enhanced security and compliance with
archiving, encryption, and e-discovery
capabilities.
deliver hybrid cloud readiness, all while providing global-ready
solutions.
Together, Cisco and Microsoft have developed, tested, and
validated the Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft Cloud
Platform. The key to this solution is the integration of Cisco
Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI™) and Microsoft
Windows Azure Pack (WAP). This integration creates a
structural linkage between Cisco infrastructure and the
Microsoft cloud platform and is unique to this offering. Because
the application and infrastructure policies are preconfigured
and delivered in a WAP application policy library, you can
deploy new services and applications faster with less cost and
complexity.
To make it easier to bring services to market, Cisco and Microsoft have jointly developed and tested a range of
value-added services for our cloud provider partners. These value-added services allow you to confidently and
quickly deploy new solutions for your customers.

Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft Cloud Platform simplifies and accelerates the deployment of backup as
a service (BaaS) through the integration of Cisco software-defined networking (SDN) architecture and Microsoft
data center operations and service delivery technologies. The BaaS solution enables you to flexibly offer services
to customers who maintain on-premises or cloud-based workloads that require data protection services. With
transparent migration to hybrid architectures and operating models, and with secure multitenancy features, you can
offer BaaS on a multitenant platform. This lets you deliver both in-cloud and remote BaaS, with or without local
data retention, to heterogeneous customer environments for service compatibility and functionality. You can also
provide additional value-added services to increase your revenue streams, including archiving, encryption,
e-discovery, security, and compliance.
Backup to the Future
Backup as a service is a significant market opportunity for cloud providers. IDC estimates the aggregate market for
backup and recovery as a service to be US$673.2 million in 2015, growing to US$1.02 billion by 2018. But many
cloud providers need to play the role of a systems integrator before they can offer BaaS solutions.
Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft Cloud Platform BaaS helps you reduce your backup infrastructure
complexity and costs. With this solution you can significantly reduce your time to value and generate increased
revenue without significant investment in development or integration. Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft
Cloud Platform BaaS helps you expand your customer base into the backup and data protection market. It can help
enhance the loyalty of your existing customers through reliable backup offerings that complement their current
services
Backup to the Power of Three
Cisco, Microsoft, and Commvault have worked together to build BaaS with advanced data protection for physical
and virtual environments (Figure 1). This lets you offer backup and recovery services wherever your customers’
data or workloads reside. Data protection and data survivability services can be provided for workloads within your
cloud environment and management domain. And backup and recovery services for workloads outside of your
management domain can be provided for on-premises, public, private, or hybrid cloud environments.

Use Cases
In-Cloud Backup as a Service
Also known as cloud backup or cloud data protection, in-cloud BaaS enables customers to protect workloads within
your cloud environments.
In-cloud BaaS (Figure 2) provides:
●
Backup and recovery of workloads within the service provider cloud
●
Backup and recovery functionality at the application, file, and virtual machine levels
●
Replication of backup data to a remote data center for recovery against data corruption due to user error,
malware, and more

Remote Backup as a Service with Local Data Retention
Also known as remote recovery as a service or remote with rapid recovery, remote BaaS offerings let customers
perform backups at their data centers and replicate backup data to your cloud remotely. You own or manage the
remote site for providing recovery services to the customer. With this use case, you have the ability to provide
backup and recovery service for production virtual servers from a customer data center to your data center along
with local, customer data center backup and recovery capabilities.
Remote BaaS with local data retention (Figure 3) provides:
●
Backup and recovery service for production physical and virtual servers from a customer data center to a
cloud provider data center along with local recovery capabilities
●
Backup and recovery functionality at the application, file, and virtual machine levels

Remote Backup as a Service without Local Data Retention
Also known as remote backup with cloud-based recovery, remote BaaS without local retention lets customers
perform backups to your clouds located remotely. In this use case, you can provide backup and recovery service
for production virtual servers from a customer data center to your data center. This service does not require local
storage capacity at the enterprise data centers to host backup data. Backup data is directly copied over to your
Cisco Cloud Architecture remote data center using Commvault software.
Remote BaaS without local data retention (Figure 4) provides:

Why Cisco?
Cloud providers can spend months planning and deploying the network and server components of a reference
architecture. To reduce the time and effort required, Cisco and Microsoft formed a joint engineering partnership
and developed the Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft Cloud Platform. This solution allows cloud providers
to quickly deploy services to the market in a fraction of the time compared to traditional product development
cycles.
Cisco ACI automates the deployment of the network components while WAP deploys and configures the server
architecture and applications needed to support the desired services. The result is a complete reference
architecture supported by Cisco and Microsoft, tuned for backup as a service as well as many other cloud providerfocused offerings.
With the power of Cisco Cloud Architecture solutions, your time to market for new services is drastically reduced.
You benefit from faster time to value, lower engineering costs, and the ability to deliver a critical value-added
service to your customers. Cisco and Microsoft also provide enhanced partner programs and go-to-market support,
including:
●
