Start with a free pasta meal. Then, sit back and enjoy some fine performances consisting of dramatic shorts, a monologue, mime, dialogue, and a comic sketch. Next up, a series of media arts videos and animations. Add some live musical guitar selections, both classical and modern. Then, some more videography. Finally, off to the art hall upstairs to view the visual arts and media arts works in a gallery setting. What’s not to enjoy?! Thanks to the dedication of many students in the culinary arts, drama, music, media arts, and visual arts programs, the night was considered an emphatic success by all those who attended and participated. 3 St. Martin’s Drumline Year a Success! The second year of Drumline has proven to be a great success here at St. Martin. This year we have performed at many school events including: Awards night, Gr. 8 Open House, The Christmas Showcase, Mississauga Family of Schools Christmas Concert, Talent show and we also will be performing at Graduation. In addition to our school events, we are also branching out into our community to perform. This year we have performed at the Mississauga Sport’s Council Sports Week, the 4 Victim Services Peel Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night and the Mississauga Sports Council Annual Sports Dinner. Lastly, St. Martin hosted the Mississauga Day of Drumline on May 14th, and also, performed alongside very prestigious Drumline’s of the GTA at the Toronto Day of Drumline on May 28th. The coaches, Ms. Vitale and Ms. Corredato are extremely proud of the hard work our team members have put forth towards Drumline this entire year. Auditions for next year’s Drumline will begin in September. Our students take part in Celebrating the Spirit of Social Justice. Social Justice Conference: Youth Making A Difference This Conference, the third annual Youth Making a Difference Workshop was hosted and presented by DPCDSB in partnership with ACCESS: Allowing Children a Chance at Education, youthrun-non-profit organization. It took place on April 29, 2011 at Brampton Soccer Centre. The goal of the Social Justice Conference Team was to educate, empower and raise awareness about social justice issues and to provide the students with some tools, support and knowledge to transform their passion for good into activism and social change. The students were invited to explore community involvement and the variety of volunteer and charity resources that are available to them. We are proud to have students who are interested in social justice and striving to be the change in the world. 5 Track and Field Congratulations to our 2011 St Martin Track & Field Team as they competed against athletes from the Region of Peel and surrounding areas. Our team faced many challenges throughout the season, not the least of all being Mother Nature. They endured an abundance of rain, wind, hail, and often very cold temperatures more often than not, making competition conditions quite a challenge especially for the newcomers to the sport. The additional challenge of mismatched spikes, limited spike sizes, and a minimal number of singlets, saw the 6 athletes demonstrating the epitome of what it means to be teammates, helping one another and sharing our limited resources to be ready before each event. The team competed in 2 meets prior the ROPSSAA this year: the Kitchener Track Wars and St. Marcellinus NOD Meet, where they ran, jumped and threw, putting forth their best effort in their individual events. After weeks of practicing each of the athletes grew and developed in their own way, achieving their personal bests in at effort to qualify for the ROPSSAA Championships held at Centennial Stadium. Track and Field Continued The ROPSSAA Championships proved very challenging and tested our athletes both physically and mentally as they faced their toughest competition yet. The athletes made us extremely proud, not only performing at their best for the season, but by being a constant source of support for their teammates, cheering and encouraging everyone to do their very best. A special mention goes out to Bianca Burns who was the sole St. Martin Track and Field athlete to qualify for South Regionals held in St. Catharines. Competing in the Senior Girls Triple Jump, Bianca represented our school extremely well finishing 6th overall with a personal best jump of 10.19m and making her the 6th best Senior Girls triple jumper in all of Southern Ontario. Congratulations Bianca! To our Mustang Track and Field team, you have made your coaches extremely proud! Your hard work, discipline, and determination has shone through this season. Your support for one another as you cheered on your teammates has not only demonstrated incredible sportsmanship, but the epitome of what it means to be a part of this team. Congratulations St. Martin Track & Field Team, you should be very proud of your accomplishments! Team Members: Elie Darwich, James Del Pilar, Jon Nolasco, Jenny Doan, Natalie Doan, Anita Nwaghodo, Jenna Polla, Dana Wegierak, Natalia Zych, Devon Alleyne Smart, Greg Chrzan, Shane Miles, Bianca Burns, Montanna Jones, Kendal Kasper, Larissa Setnik, Marta Setnik, Emma MacDonald, Daniel Berdusco, Triston Brookes, Patrick Maziarz, Jeffrey Mejia, and Kadeen Pilgrim. The goal of the Youth Faith Ambassador Rally is to empower, recognize and build up faith in our Youth Faith Leaders under the slogan Twogether We Build God’s Kingdom. This is the second year that this type of Youth Rally is taking place in DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board. There were about 335 high school and elementary students in attendance celebrating Jesus as the Light of the World. 8 Throughout the day, the students had the opportunity to pray, reflect, discuss, participate, and most importantly to celebrate the Eucharist. Also, they were commissioned to take the Good News they learned, and to share it with the school community. The celebrant of the Eucharistic Celebration was Rev. Marc-Andre Campbell, Pastor of St. Joseph Parish; the Guest Speaker and the Workshop leader was Cale Clarke, the Director of The Faith Explained. Our students, the Youth Faith Ambassadors have contributed to the faith day in a faithful, fruitful, and a respectful way. St. Martin Students Participate In Youth Faith Ambassador Rally (continued) Cathy Saytar, Superintendent Mississauga South, leading the students in Celebrating Jesus as the Light of the World. Volleyball Canada’s Top National Champions (18U, Division 1, Tier 1) for 2011 is the “DEFENSA 18U ” Volleyball Team which practices out of Burlington. St. Martin’s Oksana Kozak (#12) has been a player on the team for the past 3 years. There were 80 teams from across Canada registered in this 18U national competition which took place in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Over three days of competition, “DEFENSA” won all their matches, leading up to the Finals, where they met the “BISONS” from Winnipeg (last year’s champions) and beat them 25-21, 25-19 for the Gold! Congratulations to Oksana and her team, who also won the Ontario Volleyball Association’s 18U Provincial Championships (Div 1, Tier 1) earlier this year in April! 10 from the science department... The Year in Retrospect: Having Phun with Fizziks Ask any physics student and he will tell you that “fizziks is phun”. While it is true that concepts such as wave-particle duality, quantum theory, special relativity, dynamics, conservation of energy and momentum, and field theory had to be mastered, this year’s crop of budding physicists used their creativity to complete two design challenges that honed their scientific investigation skills in a fun way. The first challenge was to build an original toy that involved friction and/or air resistance, linear and/or circular motion and at least one of projectile motion, motion on a ramp, or motion involving pulleys/springs. The second was to build a container as light and as small as possible that would protect the egg when dropped from a 3-m height. As well, one class period was devoted to pure entertainment when each student demonstrated a “really cool” application of Newton’s laws to the chorus of “oohs and aahs” from their peers. So, stay tuned for more “phun with fizziks” in 2011-2012. St. Martin Teacher Receives “Community Achievement Award” On May 13, 2011, at the 9th Annual Business Excellence Awards Evening at Le Jardin Conference and Events Centre, Ms. Ganza, our Religion/Theology teacher was presented a “Community Achievement Award” by the CanadianCroatian Chamber of Commerce. For more than nine years, the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce has recognized companies that demonstrate a level of performance above all others, or individuals whose selfless dedication, contribution or philanthropy have positively impacted the Croatian-Canadian community. During Ms. Ganza’s 30 years of service as an educator, or in a position of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, volunteer or a supporter she has greatly contributed to the achievements of the numerous Canadian Croatian organizations. Yet, it was her initiative and work of introducing the Croatian Language as a High School Credit into the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, in Mississauga, and also in Hamilton, Oakville, Kitchener and Cambridge, as well as teaching the language that made her contributions unique and priceless. So, the Croatian community got together to thank her for her selfless dedication and inspiration. Ms. Ganza’s contributions in the field of education or charity work were already recognized, both, at the level of the City of Mississauga, and the Canadian level. She is the Recipient of the “Civic Award of Recognition” presented to her by Mayor Hazel McCallion, and the Members of the Council, and a “Canada’s Birthday Achievement Award” presented to her on the occasion of “127 Anniversary of Canada” for contributing unselfishly to the betterment of our great country Canada. Her humanitarian work abroad was praised by nobody else, but the Living Saint herself; now the late Mother Teresa; the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, when she was serving as a volunteer in summer of 1996, in the order of Missionaries of Charity, Calcutta, West Bengal, India. We are proud to have such a dedicated teacher to serve our students. Congratulations and much luck in your future endeavours. 11 St. Martin S.S./ Synnex Canada Nerdbotics Team St. Martin has been a participant in the F.I.R.S.T robotics competition for the last 9 years. If it was not for the dedicated student members and mentors, it would not be possible for St. Martin to compete. A great amount of fundraising and organization goes into it before the season even starts. This year, we were quite fortunate to have acquired a sponsor; Synnex Canada. In early January, the details of the structure and rules of the game are laid out in what is called the ‘kickoff’ at the Science Centre. Approximately 2000 teams throughout North America and across the world are listening in on the ‘kickoff’ simulcast so that they can fervently begin the 6 week build season. It should be noted that a portion of this time is lost for Canadian teams since the build season overlaps the exam period for semester one. The F.I.R.S.T robotics competition for 2011 presented one of the greatest challenges for the teams involved. This was mainly due to the fact that there were two major tasks that were given; the creation of the customary main robot and the addition of a minibot that would be deployed in the latter stages of each game. At St. Martin, we have a very young team that is made up primarily with grade 9 and 10 students. A 12 young team such as ours will therefore have less experience and will require more time to develop tooling, organization and interpersonal skills. Whatever we lacked in experience, though, we made up for in enthusiasm and dedication. As a team, we decided that it would be best to focus on the main robot. We are fortunate to have dedicated mentors such as Tony, Daniel, and Michael Veneziano as well as Arthur Jacek. They showed that they were skilled enough to be able to come up with a design for the main robot that would prove to be very effective in the latter stages of the competition. The build took all of the six weeks and then some! Most of the robot was complete by the end of the six weeks, however, there was still a fair amount of work to be done. Between the end of the build and the competition, we were not permitted to work on the robot. We were permitted to plan for when the time came that we would be able to commence the final portion of the build. As is customary for many teams, when it was time for the practice sessions of the competition on the Thursday, we were still building to complete the robot. The combination of rookie drivers, rookie team members, no practice and no troubleshooting time contributed to a less than optimistic first day of competition on Friday. It was only at the end of a full day of competing when the drivers, Anthony Chamberlain and Aldrich Wingsiong were able to practice with the robot. It was also during most of this day that St. Martin S.S./ Synnex Canada Nerdbotics Team we were able to do some troubleshooting with programming and mechanical. On the positive side, there were no major mechanical breakdowns! Saturday was magical! The robot performed flawlessly! The drivers made all the adjustments necessary to control the robot with excellent results! This was definitely a testament to the robust design. When the preliminary round ends, what happens next is that the team rankings are posted. The top 8 teams choose teams with whom they will form an alliance. A total of 24 teams advance to the ‘playoff’ round. Although we were ranked 30th out of 35 teams on our side of the arena, we were chosen to be a part of an alliance with two of the top teams. There is no doubt we were not up to our potential on Friday. If it were not for our performance on Saturday, we would not have been chosen. We, as it turns out, were a perfect fit for the two other teams in the alliance. The ‘playoff’ round was a best of three format. Our alliance won the first game but due to technical difficulties, we lost the next two matches. Our alliance members were no longer able to deploy their minibots. It was only during the last 20 seconds of the third match that our robot had a drivetrain problem. This experience has proven to be our most successful robotics season yet. The addition of a new sponsor and the development of our young team members will undoubtedly provide the St. Martin S.S./Synnex Canada Nerdbotics team with many more successful seasons to come! 13 lle ie ldwl- ood- , Disci Know Good- s, Dis ness, ciplin , Dis- Know , Goo , Disc Know ood- sciplin nowl , o n , s e s K i e s s e i , , d s G K G e s g e n s D g e e o s , i , D e e n e d g g e e o e , lin n n ed pl s, edg oodn Disci owled Good dge, G ness Goodn owled nowl Good Discp wledg dnes iscipli nowle G K o n K D e K Thank you LTO (Long-Term Occasional) Teachers! Joanne Amaral, Jessica Cordeiro, Kristin Ferreira, Kasie Moniz, Chastine Palinic, Anto Cosic, Rob DiLeo, Carl Mostacci On behalf of the St. Martin Community I would like to thank you for your commitment and effort made within our school. Your contributions in the class room were priceless, and your devotion to the vocation of teaching was evident in your daily interactions with St. Martin Students, Staff, and Parents. Beyond the classroom, you have all made extra curricular commitments above and beyond the call of duty; spending numerous hours working to make St. Martin a better place. Whether coaching our sports teams, helping with talent shows, working on curriculum initiatives, or helping cook in the kitchen, your efforts never went unappreciated, and are a testament to the great people that you are. We all have much to learn from you, and I have made personal reflection and tried to put myself back in your position as the new teacher on the block. It’s always important to remember where you started, and the path that you have taken to determine where you are. I am certain that your hard work and determination will take each of you to great places to achieve great things. It is very sad to see you go, and difficult to say goodbye. But, with good fortune we hope to have you back. Best of luck to you all, and hope to see you sooner than later. Mr. Petruccelli. Farewell Miss Filice As your protégé of one year, I must thank you for all the guidance and support you have given me. Coming into a new building in a leadership role, you provided me the comfort and welcome that I needed in one of my most challenging times. After spending one year with you, I can honestly say that it is a huge personal loss to see you go. After four years at St. Martin I am certain things will not be the same without you, but you will have definitely left your mark. I can only hope to carry on a small fragment of what you have left behind. Your kind and caring spirit, your generosity, and your dedication to education are a few of your great virtues that we must all find within ourselves to model for our students. Over the course of the 2010-2011 school year we have shared good times and bad, but only the good will be carried on in my memories of sharing the office with you. Being my first year I will always reflect back on this year as the most influential, and I am glad that I have your footsteps to follow. I wish you all the best in your upcoming year at St. Marcellinus as their new V.P., and look forward to working with you again, Peter P., VP. CONTACTS School (905) 279- 3171 Principal F.
