Dr. Katz is the author of The Burdens
of Brotherhood: Jews and Muslims
from North Africa to France.
Recently awarded a National Jewish
Book Award, Burdens of Brotherhood
examines the history of social,
cultural, and political relations
between Jews and Muslims in France
and much of the Francophone world
from the First World War to the
present.
Through his work, Dr. Katz tells the
story of the shifting meaning of French
nationhood across the twentieth
century, and frames France in the
twentieth century as an increasingly
Mediterranean space.
This event is made possible with support from the UH Center for Public History
Lecture Series and the UH Middle Eastern Studies Program.
