St. Joseph Streetsville Catholic Elementary MARCH 2016 March 2016 Holy Week Jesus, you are triumphant And your footsteps are determined. Your road has been steep and rough. This week we see the journey That you have made toward life. You are our leader and our guide. We too walk on this road. We place our feet, Our words, our actions...on the road. We walk behind you, We follow you. Amen Children born in 2012 must be registered for FDK!!! Register Immediately!!! Principal’s Message During this wonderful season of Lent culminating in Holy Week we journey together as a school community. We are called to recognize our need to change and to heed the call of God in our daily lives. It is a time for Catholics to turn away from sinfulness— to have a change of heart— as we prepare for the joyous feast of Easter. It is time for prayer, penance and works of charity for others. Students are also encouraged to participate in our school-wide ShareLife activities. Let us all work together this season of Lent to perform acts of charity and to display to others the generosity of St. Joseph Catholic School. March Break takes place from March 12 to March 20 inclusive. I’m sure we are all looking forward to spending some time with friends and family. Finally, at the end of March we will celebrate Holy Week and Easter. Spend some time this Holy Week focusing on the promises that God has made to us; that we will never die, that we are not on our own on the journey of life, that God sent his only Son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we might have eternal life. On behalf of the entire staff, I wish you and your family a peaceful and blessed Easter. Sincerely, C. Bacci Principal Water in the Yard March Break As we are quickly moving toward Spring, water and mud around the school yard is inevitable. If students get wet, our school approach is to contact parents to bring dry clothing. We direct our students to stay away from pools of water. This may be inconvenient for some parents who work outside the home. Please place an extra pair of socks and track pants in your child’s backpack in the event that a change of clothes is necessary. March Break school, Monday, will take place March 21, 2016. this March 12 to 20, 2016. Have a safe and happy holiday! The Great Big Crunch is an annual moment of antisilence where everyone gets together and bites into crunchy fresh local produce in unison. The purpose of this event is to highlight healthy eating and the importance eating locally grown food. Virtue of the Month March: KINDNESS On Monday, March 21st we will be participating in Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by WWF trying to protect the planet. Between 12:45-1:45 classes will turn off their lights as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. A toast to tap water! The Region of Peel and the Peel District School Board have invited all students to celebrate Peel tap water during Canada Water Week by taking part in a school wide synchronized drink of tap water. Our school’s Great Gulp event will take place on Tuesday, March 22nd. Help support this initiative by sending your child to school with a reusable water bottle so that they can make a toast to tap water. As a participating school, we will be entered into a draw for a water refill station for the school or reusable water bottles for each student. Peel tap water is a safe, clean, convenient choice that is good for your health and the environment. To learn more about Peel tap water visit www.peeltapwater.ca. Coming Soon… During the month of April we will be participating in the “Crayola ColorCycle” program. We will be collecting used Crayola markers to be repurposed. A great way to start off our Lenten Season! Class Lists for September IMPORTANT NOTICE!!! Letters requesting your child’s placement for the 2015/2016 school year are due to the office Friday, April 15, 2016. Please limit comments to specific learning style and environment rather than requests for specific teachers. Staff of St. Joseph School will soon meet regarding the organization of students into classes for September, 2016. If your children will attend St. Joseph School next year and there are any learning needs you feel need to be addressed when making up classes please do so in writing to Mrs. Bacci by April 15, 2016. Letters that list a specific teacher or names of other children with which you would like your child placed will not be considered. Information from many sources will be pooled to help us make the best placement for all children. All staff work very hard on these lists to balance classes including learning styles, teaching styles, gender, and a cross section of abilities. Bear in mind as well, that as a small school and primary class restrictions (limit 20 students) that combined classes are a fact of life and children will have this experience from time to time. Students from Mrs. Gaskin’s and Mrs. Sajda’s classes will be presenting “The Stations of the Cross” on Thursday, March 24 at 1:15. Parents as always are encouraged to attend! Library Learning Commons News I just want to take this opportunity once again, to thank everyone for their support during our Christmas book fair. It was very successful and together we raised a total of $4500. Through Scholastic book fair incentives, we were able to purchase new books for students to read. We have started reading books that have been nominated in the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading program. Each week I will be reading a different book to primary students followed by an activity. At the end of April, each student will get to vote on their favourite book. Forest of Reading is a literacy initiative created by school and public libraries that exposes students to Canadian books and authors. A shout out to Mrs. Suljak’s grade one students for being the only class without any overdue books last term. Keep up the good work! Just a reminder…Many students are coming to the LLC without their library books. Please remind your child of their library day so they are able to get a new book. Last week, the LLC opened their doors to the grade 8 students at lunch to catch up on any homework, read quietly or use the computer lab to complete any assignments. The grade 7’s will be able to start signing up beginning this month. I personally want to wish everyone a blessed Easter. God bless! Happy Reading Everyone! Pina Guerrizio Teacher-Librarian Marketplace and Kate Jones - Parent Engagement Evening On Thursday, February 5 our School Council hosted a “MarketPlace” event and hosted Parenting Expert Kate Jones. Our “MarketPlace” featured invited guests who came to share their skills and services in our community. Kate Jones came to talk to our school about “Great Parenting Skills” and taught us about how to “navigate” parenting using her “GPS” roadmap to learning about your child’s personality and the best way to approach problem solving and negotiating difficult situations. Kate will be back with us in the near future to do small workshops with any parents or guardians who wish to attend. More information will be forthcoming. Thanks to our School Advisory Council (especially S. Kockovski) for organizing this event for our parent community. 6 13 Sun Mon 2 Wed 4 Fri Skating @ Vic Johnson / 12 Sat 11 March Break Begins 5 1 - Movie Day “Inside Out” Grade 1 Trip Peel Safety Village / Family Chess Tournament/ “We are Called” Diversity Conference 2:30 - Great Big Crunch in Gym 19 2nd Hep B & HPV 3Lunch Moms Thu March 2016 Tue 1Pizza Day and FDK to Humber Arboretum 18 2 26 Earth Hour Feast of St. Joseph 17 9 Gr. 3/4, Grade 4 10 Pizza Day 16 Good Friday 25 1:15 Stations of the Cross April 1 Community Officer Visit April Fool’s Day 31 23 Primary Easter 24 15 7Primary Intramurals 8 Rosary Apostolate @ Lunch 14 22 30 Rotation 29Pizza Day Primary Intramurals @ Lunch The Big Gulp in Gym 28 Grade 1 Scientist in the School Primary Intramurals @ Lunch gins / 12:45 - 1:45 Earth Hour 20Palm Sunday 21Holy Week BeSpring Begins March Break Ends 27 Easter Monday
