This year’s theme was Walking in the Light of Christ, in which staff, students and the community could reflect on the many wonderful contributions that Catholic schools make in our communities. On May 11th, twenty students from Loyola represented our school at an inter-school board-wide mass held at St. Marcellinus Secondary School. The outdoor mass was presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Collins. In his message, he reminded students of the virtues and values of our Catholic faith and encouraged them to spread their faith amongst their peers. It was a memorable and touching experience that the students will forever hold dear to their hearts. Loyola Catholic School Council By Laurie Eschli, Co-Chair As we close out another successful school year, we also close out 34 years on South Common Court. It is so exciting to finally be moving into New Loyola. I have been part of this process from the beginning when we were first approved by the board back in 2004. What a great team effort over these past years to be where we are now. Never stop believing – everything is possible if you try. Speaking of moving on, this is something I too will be doing, after serving 16 years on Loyola’s school council. I started as a parent member in 1996 when Lisa started; she graduated in 2001, Robert in 2004 and now Kevin graduates from the PIP class in June 2012, so I finally get to “graduate” too. I have been truly blessed to work with all the administration and staff over these years. The entire Loyola community has to be proud of all the academic, artistic and athletic talent we have. The success stories, the ROPPSA championships, the medal wins just keep coming. It has been such a pleasure to be involved and be a part of all of this. My sincere thanks go out to each and every one of you for what you do to make every day a better day. You can and do make a difference. Also a big thank you goes out to all the dedicated parents, staff and students who took time from their busy schedules to come out to our monthly council meetings over the past year. 2011-12 Council: Parent members: Co-chairs Laurie Eschli and Vince Mammoliti, Secretary - Bernadette Jarvis, Treasurer – Maral Shokoohideh, Parish rep – Marilyn Gomes, Parents -Karen Becke, Carmen Cutajar, Rosalind Majanil-Morrow, Sita Power and Mary Beth St. Louis. Student Council: Denise Brand Principal - Joe Giancola, Vice-Principals - Sandra Antonutti, Shawn Clarkin, Teacher rep - Maureen Dugo, Non-Teacher rep - Margot Pasquini and Chaplain - David Smibert. Thank you to our school secretary, Lillian Landry for all your support to the council. Attending secondary school council meetings gives you a chance to be informed on school, board and ministry issues, to socialize and network with other parents. Council also hosted a Mental Health and a Bullying presentation with funds from the CCCSC and PRO grant funds. Please consider becoming a council member next year; you do not have to be a member to attend any meeting, but if you make a commitment to be a council member, our by-laws state you may not miss more than 3 meetings. The meetings are usually held the first Monday of the month. Council information and applications comes out mid September. Completed applications are required to be submitted prior to the start of the first 2012-2013 council meeting on Monday September 17th 2012. We welcome and encourage all Loyola parents/guardians to attend. To the Loyola staff that are retiring, to Mr. Shawn Clarkin who moves on to Cardinal Ambrozic, to the 2012 Loyola graduating students, on behalf of the Loyola School Council, we wish you Best of Luck and success in all your future endeavors. May God Bless you and keep you safe and healthy over the summer. “We’ll see you in September”. 2 Congratulations on Your Retirement – Mrs. Coules and Mrs. Gerardi! Congratulations on Your Retirement – Mr. & Mrs. Clancy! On June 7th, 2012 we celebrated the retirement of Lucy Gerardi and Leslie Coules. Mrs. Gerardi has been in the Loyola science department for 13 fabulous years while Mrs. Coules has spent her entire 31 year teaching career in the Loyola science department. Both have been the foundation of the biology program and have continually brought out excellence in their students. The night’s theme was Laverne and Shirley. Squiggy (Ms. Fernandez) and Lenny (Mr. Farlie) were the MC’s of the festivities. All dressed up in costume, they brought both ladies’ teaching careers to life with many funny anecdotes. Guest speakers, Doug Digby (former Loyola principal) and Trish Ostberg (principal at St. Clare) provided wonderful tributes to our retirees. Of course the occasion would not be complete without a song from the “Lounge Lizards” and not one but three amazing slideshows produced by Ms. Dugo. The evening was extremely special as Mrs. Coules and Mrs. Gerardi were surrounded by their friends, family, and colleagues both past and present. As Mrs. Coules said “You are the best, I have no words- I will always treasure the memories of that night” and Mrs. Gerardi said “the whole evening took my breath away!” Congratulations ladies on a well deserved retirement. Loyola will certainly miss you! The end of the 2011/2012 school year brings the retirement of two of Loyola’s teachers – Mr. Clancy and Mrs. Clancy. Department Heads of English and Science, respectively, Mr. Clancy and Mrs. Clancy have worked tirelessly to ensure student success and have also contributed a lot to the Loyola community over the years – organizing clubs, coaching sports teams, and much more! They will certainly be missed. As their teaching careers come to an end, we wish them well on this next stage of their lives. Best wishes on your retirement and congratulations! Families in Need of Financial Assistance Final Report from Student Council! By Denise Brand, Student Council Prime Minister From Pep Rally’s to free cake, Student Council worked their hardest to end off the 2011/2012 Loyola school year with a bang! As one of our final acts of duty, Student Council presented the students will the Annual Loyola Spirit Week in late May. Kicking the week off with a “Loyola Swag Day” and a Pep Rally, the school was filled with excitement and school spirit! Following was a day for all students to cool off with free freezies for everyone during all lunches! (New Policy) Loyola has now partnered with the Salvation Army in order to help out any of our families in need of financial assistance. In order to receive assistance from the school, parents must contact their child’s Vice Principal and then register with the Salvation Army. Then our biggest event of the year took place on Thursday when Student Council and Loyola’s very own Sound and Light Crew collaborated to bring the students Jamfest! On that beautiful sunny day, students had the opportunity to enjoy the weather along with great food (complements to Mr.Roque and his crew) great music, and tons of fun on the inflatable obstacle courses! A great BIG THANK YOU to Ms. Van Gorp and Mr. Bronson and his Sound and Light Crew for ensuring that Jamfest was a success! Finally to end off the week, Loyola students were treated with free cake celebrating “Loyola’s Movin’ on Out”! It was surely a week of fun and excitement and it couldn’t have been possible without all of the hard workers on Student Council, Sound and Light and the amazing teachers who supported us along the way! As the year comes to an end, Student Council would just like to thank all of you students and teachers who have helped make this year one of the greatest in Loyola history! The memories we have made as a school community will sure not be forgotten, especially to those seniors who will be leaving Loyola and moving onto greater things. It has been a great honour to have served this school as the Student Council Prime Minister and to have worked with such an amazing group of students who have been filled with the Warrior Spirit we so proudly display! Keep that Warrior pride with you always, and have a safe and enjoyable summer! 3 From Your Catholic School Trustee By Sharon Hobin So many great things have been accomplished this year at Loyola. I send sincere congratulations to all the teams, clubs, award and contest winners who have put their best forward to represent themselves, their teams and Loyola. I am delighted to send my thanks to all those involved and special thanks to the coaches, mentors and volunteers who have helped in any way. We celebrated Catholic Education Week during the week of May 7th to May 11th. It was a time to celebrate this gift of Catholic education in our province. The week provides unique opportunities to celebrate the distinctive and dynamic work of Catholic schools. Catholic education is a partnership of home, school and parish. This is evident at Loyola by the involvement of staff and students along with your Catholic School Council and of course, Monsignor Shiels, Father Silvio and all the staff of St. Ignatius. Monsignor Shiels celebrates Mass for the school at the church and Father Silvio celebrates Mass in the chapel and visits classes. Please make sure that you have directed your taxes to the Catholic school system. If you move, the taxes default to public. Make a point to check your assessment form. If the government is counting heads we want to make sure that you are counted in the number of ratepayers who are supporting Catholic schools. It makes a difference to the provincial government. As I write this document we await the debate and vote on the provincial budget and yet our grants have been sent to the boards. Based on the grants, the Dufferin-Peel 2012 budget has been drafted, presented to the board and submitted to the province. These provincial Grants for Student Needs bring cuts to textbooks, technology, the number of courses a secondary student can take (year 5), transportation, administration, staff development and much more. We will be submitting a balanced operating budget of approximately $834,000,000 (million dollars) to the province. Eighty nine per cent of this budget is salaries and benefits. Most of the funding comes “targeted” and must be spent on the budget line as directed. We have about 4% funding which can be used for local needs. The great news is that our school board graduation rate for the past year was 82.67%. This rate, along with our literacy and numeracy results, continue to exceed the provincial and Peel averages. Loyola’s graduation rate was 85%. Many of our successful Student Success programs and services have included Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM), Dual Credits, Cooperative Education, Credit Recovery, Alternative Education and OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs). We are continuing to introduce programs to support student voice and customized learning through initiatives such as e-Learning. Staff is engaged in ongoing professional development to improve student outcomes. The construction of the new Loyola is ahead of schedule. The move will happen over the summer. We are beyond excited. The ribbon cutting will take place on the first day of school at 7:30 in the morning. The school blessing will be sometime later in the Fall. I would like to thank our principal Mr. Giancola, the administration team, department heads, staff and school council for their leadership, co-operation and support and to the many people responsible for making sure this school is state of the art and built on time. We have much for which to be thankful. While we continue to explore new and innovative ways to provide our students with a 21st century education, we also invite you, as parents and guardians, to get engaged in Catholic education through Loyola by joining your Catholic School Council, attending school functions and becoming aware of relevant issues and events. There are also opportunities to receive information from the board on school and board issues and achievements by signing up for eCommunity, a free information service provided through the board website at www.dpcdsb.org or by following us on Twitter at @dpcdsbSchools. Sincere congratulations to our Loyola graduates. I wish you many blessings as you move on to your next life adventure. You have been part of this school for four years and have contributed in so many ways. May God bless you always! Thank you to the Loyola Catholic School Council and their leaders Laurie Eschli and Vince Mammoliti. They have been your eyes and ears and have represented you well. Very special thanks to Laurie Eschli who has devoted over 20 years to Catholic education and now as her last child graduates she moves on to other adventures! Thank you Laurie for your dedication to Loyola! Laurie has been awarded Volunteer of the Year by CCCSC. Again, congratulations! I wish all the best to Vice Principal Shawn Clarkin who continues on his career path to a new school as vice principal. I wish Shawn God’s blessings at his new appointment. I also welcome to Loyola Mr. Paul Arthurs who is an experienced administrator and educator. Special thanks to the Loyola office staff and custodians. You have a tough job and you are always so supportive. Thanks in advance for the packing and helpful support in the move. Thanks to Ms. Erica Fijan who designs and edits this newsletter. You do a great job. As well, a big thanks to Maureen Dugo for the outstanding pictures. Special thanks to our superintendent, Cathy Saytar who is extremely supportive of the Loyola community. And finally, thank you to Mr. Giancola, Mr. Clarkin and Ms. Antonutti who work so hard to make Loyola one of our best secondary schools. They have a tough but rewarding job. They have always been very supportive of this community in so many ways. They are true advocates for Catholic education. May God bless you over the summer and may He always hold you in the palm of His hand. Happy summer! Loyola’s Co-op Job Fair By: Mrs. Rego Loyola’s Co-op Job Fair on June 6th 2012 was an immense success. Co-op students displayed their job boards describing their work experience, essential skills and future outlook on the career they chose to test drive this semester. These students were excited to talk about their co-op experience. Staff, students and employers were treated to a variety of demonstrations and creative displays in cosmetology, esthetics, hairstyling, home renovations, flooring, interior design, animal care, auto mechanics, photography, computer technology, the Canadian Forces, and more. Samples of delicious appetizers created by students in the culinary field were impressive and very popular. Some of these students are enrolled in the Dual Credit – cooking program at Humber College. Students in Interior Design and Esthetics along with their work experience also featured their learning in the Dual Credit program at Sheridan College. A huge thank you to the many employers within our community and beyond who have supported Loyola’s Co-op program, and have celebrated the success of our co-op students. We look forward to another exciting year! 4 Community Service Hours Completing 40 hours of community service is a graduation requirement, mandated by the Ministry of Education. Students will not receive a high school diploma, nor will they be able to proceed to college or university, until this requirement is met. Approved activities are those performed to support a not-for profit organization, such as a parish church, charitable foundation, food bank, community sports team, arts or cultural association, children’s day camp, or seniors’ residence. The activity must be designed to be of benefit to the community and for an agency that seeks to make a positive and ethical contribution to society. Working for free for a for-profit organization, for a business or for an individual is not community service. Examples of ineligible activities include walking your neighbour's dog, babysitting young children at home or for your neighbour, working for your family's, neighbour's or friend's business, mowing your neighbour’s lawn or shoveling their snow, activities related to hobbies, or performing duties in the home. Also ineligible are activities that provide direct financial benefit or gain to the student or to the student’s family. 30 Hour Famine By: Catharina Carey, student On May 4th, twenty students participated in Youth in Action’s 30 Hour Famine. This event included a benefit concert with all proceeds going towards the famine’s cause, “Be Education”. All money raised went towards building a school in South Sudan. The concert featured amazing performances by: The Bulletproof Tigers, Vanquish, Seam and Keek. 30 Hour Famine coordinators put in months of planning and their hard work paid off – the famine raised a total of $1800. Not only did they succeed in raising money, but also in raising awareness towards the growing problem of hunger in third world countries. I would like to thank all of the teachers who came out and supported the event – we could not have done it without you. A special recognition goes out to Natalia Gonzales and Sofia Bacerra for all of their hard work in making the famine such a success. Last and certainly not least, thank you to Konrad Swierczek and the Sound & Light Crew for your constant support throughout the long process of planning the benefit concert. Link Crew The Link Crew Leaders for September have already started training for Grade 9 Orientation Day. Based on the energy, laughs and enthusiasm from our May Day session, these Link Leaders will be an awesome team. More information about eligible and ineligible activities, including a list of approved community service opportunities, is available in the guidance office. Students should consult with their guidance counselors if there is any uncertainty about the validity of a proposed activity. The principal or designate has the right to refuse hours that do not fall within the guidelines. Students must provide documented evidence of this community service in the form of a letter on the agency’s or organization’s stationery, with a letterhead that includes the agency’s name, address and phone number. This letter should include the following information: Student’s name Description of Activity Number of Hours Dates of Activity and Completion Supervisor’s name and contact information Supervisor’s Signature Link Leaders will continue their training on August 27th and 28th in order to prepare for the amazing Grade 9 Orientation Day on August 29th, which is followed by a BBQ hosted by Student Council. Loyola Students and Staff Attend Harry Jerome Awards The H.O.P.E. club finished the year with a couple of smaller activities. The Peace Garden Clean-up was completed for the last time at this facility, and at Jamfest, the club sold out of Kisko Freezies on the sunny and hot afternoon. At the school’s closing mass, H.O.P.E. invited a member of the charity, One Child, to present them with a cheque for $3,000, representing the fundraising throughout Lent and Culturefest in response to student interest in helping the charity meet its goal of protecting children from child sex slavery. The H.O.P.E. club celebrated the year-end with a party and a commitment to new projects and activities next year. The club thanked the graduating students, Sofia Becerra and Keneisha Petgrave for their hard work, creativity, ideas and leadership throughout their years at Loyola. At the Xawards, Bola Adetunji was honored for her commitment and dedication throughout the current year. As always, the club invites new members to consider joining. H.O.P.E. to see you in September. The Green Industries classes and SHSM students enjoyed the Spring semester keeping busy learning and exploring horticulture, floristry, and landscape design. The semester began with inclass student certification in Standard First Aid and CPR. Students planted and observed seed germination. Class trips included visiting the NedLaw Living Wall and Green Roof headquarters, attendance at the Royal Botanical Gardens seminar on plant-insect relationships, and reach-ahead days at the University of Guelph and the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture and Botanical Gardens. These experiential days outside of the classroom provided students with hands on, reallife access and interaction with other students, potential employers, and future professors or instructors. At Niagara Parks, students met and enjoyed a personal tour led by James Smith, the Superintendent of the School of Horticulture, Botanical Garden, and Butterfly Conservatory. To beautify our school, students have planted and maintained several planter containers with annual plant material including spikes, Potato vine, Bacopa, Canna Lilies, Coleus, Fountain grass, and New Guinea impatiens. Students created floral designs from fresh cut flowers in time to bring them home for the Easter weekend. This spring, students learned about floral wiring techniques and created boutonnières. Next year, with the installation of our floral cooler in our new greenhouse facility, we look forward to being able to create corsages and boutonnières for our formal dance nights. Next year promises new beginnings and wonderful opportunities for our students! We are looking forward to enjoying our new greenhouse facility, hosting plant sales, volunteering toward the creation of the HOPE Peace garden, and strengthening our partnerships with the Riverwood Conservancy and Greening Sacred Spaces. The University of Guelph has just announced five bursaries of $2000 to be given to students graduating with the SHSM designation from high school beginning this September 2012. On an end note, congratulations to green industries student Daniel Johnson for his admission to the highly competitive Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program at the University of Guelph, where he will follow in the footsteps of former Loyola students David Fredenburgh, Kyle Gatchalian, Monika Kokoska, and teacher Jennifer Healey. Congratulations, Daniel! 6 Religion in Action By: Dina Jugurnauth, student Throughout the school year, Mr. Roque’s Grade 12 Religion students participated in the donation of food and clothing to the Salvation Army. In Religion class, we were taught the themes of appreciation, love, care and giving. As devout Christian students, we were required to take those skills outside of the classroom and help the poor and needy within our community. With all the love and warmth from the students, we were able to collect over $3000 worth of food. We took what we learned in Religion and brought it into society. We are all very proud of the fact that we were able to come together as a team to collect food and raise awareness for people who are in dire need. It was hard in the beginning, but with due progression of the course, we attained our goal as we were determined to make a difference as Loyola students. We would like to thank all of the students who participated in this charitable cause, and of course Mr. Roque. P.U.S.H Goes Camping at Spirit Point Lodge By: Mr. Cornwall At the End of May, the students of the P.U.S.H program came together with Philip Pocock and St. Thomas Aquinas to travel up to Spirit Point Lodge located by the beautiful Hinsburger Lake in South River, Ontario. During the four day, three night stay at the site, students partook in first hand aboriginal religious rituals. This included the smudging ceremony, which consisted of smelling of incense (in the form of wild sweet grass) as well as the sweat lodge - a small tent like structure where hot stones were placed to create a warm therapeutic experience while chanting aboriginal songs. During the days, students worked on individual projects such as Birch Bark pencil cases and baskets and aboriginal medicine pouches, as well as group activities which included rock climbing and aerial obstacles. The students of the Loyola P.U.S.H program really lived up to the acronym of the program (People United towards Success and Hope). Seeing these students encourage each other in a positive constructive manner, and being so respectful of a culture that is unknown to them, really showed a sense of promise for our leaders of tomorrow. The trip to Spirit Point was an experience that will not be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to embrace it. Pipsters in Action By: Katrina Erb, student On Kevin’s birthday we had pizza and cake for lunch. On Kathleen’s birthday we enjoyed a birthday cake. On Mother’s day we invited our moms for tea and we watched our Mother’s Day Presentations. Ms. Dugo took a lot of pictures of our mothers. We took a trip to Canada’s Wonderland and the Pipsters went on all the rides. Ms. Boily and I went on the fly, the helicopter ride, the airplane ride, and the mountain ride. Ms. Boily took pictures of me and Danny hugging Snoopy. Marta, Daniella and I went on the spin ride and the pumpkin patch ride. Andrew and Ms. Roth went on top gun. Kevin, Kirsten and Andrew went on the Sloth Stunt Coaster. Sean got a Spider tattoo and Pat got two turtles. The PIP class went to St. Marcellinus for track and field. We all got ribbons for participating. Ms. Dugo drove us to the Niagara Parks Botanical School of Horticulture for a tour. We learned a lot about plants and flowers. The Pipsters also went to see the play Charlotte’s Web at the Living Arts Center and everyone enjoyed it. n the stretch rina dash dow Kirsten & Kat Ther trip to N iagara's Floral The Warrior cheering section Team together ness! m sprint Clock Kevin in the 50 PIP's Mother's Day salute! 7 Muralists Club Create Beautiful Murals for the New Loyola The Muralists Club was happy to finally realize the successful completion of their series of 4 - 4 x 8 foot murals on diversity and anti-bullying. The funding of these murals was the result of a “Speak Up” grant initiated by Mrs K. Piercey’s Alternative Education student. Mrs Piercey’s alternative education PUSH students took photos of a range of students at Loyola and encouraged them to sign their name. Using Photoshop CS5, the acrylic portraits of the murals were initially designed by the muralists club by merging the multicultural features of a wide range of students. The background signatures of these murals were based on actual Loyola student signatures which were later placed on sheets of acetate and projected. Mrs. Lorraway is honored to thank the hard working, perseverant members of the Muralists Club who completed the bulk of the work on these murals during the past 6 months. These members include Helena Rubiec, Teresa Rubiec, Gabriel Tran, Taylor Muldoon and Patricia Marukot and their advisor, Mrs C. Lorraway. These murals will be displayed in the new Loyola. We hope you enjoy them as much as we had fun creating them. Images Art Show Quoi de Neuf? Lula Lounge French Café On April 17th, our Grade 9 & 10 Core French students had the opportunity to go eat at Lula Lounge in downtown Toronto. Before the meal, they had the chance to participate in a musical & cultural workshop where they heard authentic French songs by a French Canadian local artist. They were exposed to a repertoire of different French cultural songs that originated from Africa, Quebec and France, to name a few. Some students even got the chance to accompany the artist in playing spoons for a traditional Quebec song. Europe Trip 2013 Start saving your money over the summer as the Moderns department is organizing the next Europe trip which will be from June 29th to July 9th, 2013. All students are welcome to travel with us to 5 amazing countries: Germany (Rothenburg and Munich), Italy (Venice), Switzerland (Lucerne and Heidelberg) and France (Paris). What a fabulous and special way to celebrate the end of our first year in the new Loyola! This trip promises to be very enriching for our students in many subject areas such as languages (French, Italian & German), architecture, history, geography and religion. An informative meeting about the trip will be held in September 2013. It was a reunion for the ages as 918 Loyola Alumnae came together one final time at this facility … one more time to see old friends, favorite staff & those sentimental hallways. Because come September, Loyola will move its act to 4010 Sladeview Crescent, where even more memories will be built on the ones we already have. It was a great turnout of former staff and students. Our alumnae, especially those grads from the 80’s and 90’s came back in more mature bodies … now in their 30’s and 40’s. It was an amazing evening. Proceeds from the evening are being invested in equipment for our New Loyola – a wireless sound system, a big screen TV for the cafeteria and a new large barbecue for the many fundraisers and events we host. Special thanks to our Loyola 2012 Committee – Maureen Dugo, Lillian Landry, Tina Pace, Mimi Heist, Leslie Coules, Lucy Gerardi, Pat Barnet, Teresa McFadden, Luanna Fernandez, Noreen George, Marlene Matyszczuk, Ekwy Odozor, Wendy Hope, Mary Minaudo and Anna Candeloro. It was a stellar event with over 300 student volunteers and 60 staff members working for weeks to create a joyful and wonderful night. Over 1000 people attended the event in celebration of Loyola’s multicultural heritage. Eighteen pavilions representing over fifty countries were created to showcase cultural artifacts, displays and fabulous food donated generously by parents and local merchants of the school community. The quality of the cultural entertainment by the students kept the appreciative crowd enthralled, beginning with a stunning Fashion Show highlighting the clothing of the nations and cultures from around the world. Culturefest is a wonderful event that brings together students, staff, parents and the community, united in the appreciation that Canada allows such peaceful harmony to flourish, as well as fostering new friendships and a lifetime of memories. Part of the $6,000 raised from this great celebration will support the One Child charity to help Break the Chains of the child sex trade, and a portion of the proceeds will go towards new equipment at the new Loyola. 10 Many Thanks to our Sponsors… Starsky Foods Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia Nancy Fijan Consulting Inc. We took the Mississauga Transit bus to the Islington subway station, and then traveled to Union Station. From there, we walked to the CN Tower. While at the CN Tower, we got to visit the observation deck and glass floor! The students really enjoyed traveling up the elevator and seeing all of Toronto from such a high building. After the CN Tower, we took a street car to Kensington Market. While in Kensington, we got to eat lunch – there were many choices of food from different countries around the world. We also had a chance to shop at the many interesting stores along the street. We took many pictures and have many new memories! We were so happy to visit the CN Tower and Kensington Market. This was the first time many of us have been to either of those places in Toronto. Some of us have never been on the subway, so that was fun too! Not only did we learn about our city, we also had a chance to have fun with our friends, classmates and teachers. Yell-OH! Loyola’s Dance Crew Making Us Proud… TRUE WARRIORS By: Ms. Mohipp It’s been an exciting year for Loyola’s Dance Crew - Yell-OH! It began in February with the Peel Region Division Competition for “Toronto’s Best Dance Crew” at Gateway. The competition was intense, but when Loyola got on stage they made the most of every moment. They proved to the judges that they were dedicated and talented individuals working together in a cohesive team. Yell-OH! Proudly took home the 4th place trophy, which qualified them to compete in the “Toronto’s Best Dance Crew” Competition Finals. Realizing that Loyola was one of the four teams that would be going to represent Peel Region was an honor. As April 28th approached Yell-OH! adhered to a strict and grueling practice schedule. They dedicated numerous hours practicing in front of the caf window reflections. They were determined to master the choreography and perform to the best of their ability. That’s exactly what they did. The day of the competition Yell-OH! entered Ryerson Theatre with confidence and enthusiasm - in true Warrior spirit. As the spectators nervously sat waiting for them to come on stage, the nervousness faded away with every swift moment and agile execution of the choreography they performed. Yell-OH! represented everything that is special about Loyola throughout the process of this competition. Teamwork, leadership, passion and heart are just a few words to describe this diverse group. It has been an honor to be the staff supervisor of these amazing students since its establishment in 2008. 12 X-Awards – A Celebration of Extra-Curricular Activities On May 17th, Loyola celebrated yet another successful year of extracurricular activities at the X-Awards. Students were recognized for their participation in a variety of after-school activities such as HOPE, Student Council, Running Club, Sound and Light, Reach for the Top, and many, many more! Special thanks go to our hosts – Ms. Mohipp and students Bradley Thompson and Keyontay Brown for putting on an entertaining show. Also, thank you to our organizers – Ms. Mohipp, Mrs. Spano, Mrs. Matyszczuk and Ms. Fijan. Congratulations to all of the winners and ALL students who got involved and participated in the many extra-curricular activities that Loyola has to offer! The excitement continues as we anticipate the next combination of moves, and numerous performances. “Yell-Oh!” will continue to be a proud representation of Loyola’s talents and Warrior spirit. When one generation moves on, a new generation takes the spotlight to bring a completely different and refreshing atmosphere to every audience. We would like to thank “illskillzcanada” for such an opportunity to take what Loyola has to offer in the form of dance, and perform alongside so many crews that share equal passion of this art form. A very special thank you to the administration, teachers, and students for the endless support they have given the crew. A very heartfelt goodbye goes out to the Yell-OH! members leaving us this year. I wish you luck in all your future endeavors may each of you always look back on your time as a member of Yell-OH! with great fondness.
