Principal’s Report
By J. Giancola
We are 5 months away from occupying our new Loyola Facility. This community has patiently
waited 10 years for this new school. On May 11th, we will be having our 34th year reunion at
Loyola. This will give former students and staff from Loyola an opportunity to socialize and say
“good bye” to the old Loyola facility.
On the athletic front, Loyola continues to excel in sports and extra-curricular activities. Our Sr. Girls
Basketball team, Sr. Boys Basketball team, Sr. Boys Curling team and our Sr. Boys Hockey team all
won ROPSSAA championships. Loyola has won their 30th ROPSSAA championship in the last 7
years. This is an outstanding accomplishment for a small Secondary School with limited sport facilities.

Loyola students had a number of presentations this year such as: Child Slavery- Breaking the Chain,
Haitian Dancers, Mental Health Presentation, Railway to Freedom and an Anti-Bullying presentation
by Mike Neuts. Our students also participated in a number of school trips such as Quebec City, New
York and Europe. Culturefest will take place on April 26th. We will have 18 pavilions along with food
and other cultural events and activities.
Loyola continues to excel in academics. Last year we
had 400 students on the Honour roll - this is more
than 1/3 of our student population. Our numeracy,
graduation, pass rate and credit accumulation rate
keep on improving. Our literacy rate is above the
Provincial average.

Finally, I would like to thank our Superintendent Cathy Saytar, our Trustee Sharon Hobin, our parent
council chairs Laurie Eschli and Vince Mammoliti and our parish priests, Monsignor Shields and Fr.
Silvio, for being visible accessible and supportive to the Loyola community.
Chaplaincy Report
By: D. Smibert
Happy Easter Everyone:
The reality of the resurrection is not present in words, but in action.
Our perspective on life, our outlook on world events, our attitude towards the every-day challenges of modern
life, when touched by the resurrection, turn into a daily message of hope and peace for all whom we encounter
on a daily basis.
As we head into the latter half of second semester, try to
incorporate the reality of the resurrection in your daily routine. It
can be a good opportunity to model how people can change that
behavior, attitude, and even personal expectations can be
transformed for the better. Hope is stronger than doubt. Love is
stronger than hate.
Let us pray that the morning of the resurrection stands in sharp
contrast to the darkness of Good Friday. In this way we will all
be messengers of the Good News.

With this wonderful winter and spring weather we have been enjoying, it
is exciting to see the construction of new Loyola progressing quickly;
before we know it Loyola will be in their new facility on Sladeview.
LOYOLA 2012!!!
As I write this note to you, I have the information about the proposed
provincial budget.
This budget will have to be debated and
if the opposition parties do not agree with
this budget we will be going into another
election. If not, and there is no movement
on this proposed budget, we will see cuts
to education in many areas. We know for
sure that we will see more cuts to
technology, textbooks and transportation.
There will be no extra money for Special
Education, even though we have growing costs because of the increase
of children who are coming to us who need help. There is a freeze on
salaries and changes to supply days for staff. There will be no change to
the caps on classroom size which is a very good thing! One important
change for Loyola students to know is that the government has changed
how many credits which need to be covered from a cost perspective in
secondary school. Now only 34 credits will be funded, which means if
students want to return for a full fifth year to upgrade, change courses of
study and/or just take a little longer to graduate, they cannot take a full
fifth year. We will see how all the changes unfold.
At February’s meeting, Mrs. Odozor informed council that a committee
has been formed in regards to the new Ministry Food & Beverage policy,
which is looking at ideas of possibly having themed/ethnic food days in
the cafeteria. Also, Loyola purchased non-fiction eBooks in two subject
areas – Themes in Literature & World Religions.
In March, school council presented Mr. Mike Neuts. Mike captivated the
audience sharing his story of the tragic death of his son, Myles, 10 years
ago, and the police investigation and subsequent coroner's inquest. This
changed the family forever as now Mike passionately advocates on
bullying concerns, behaviours and issues of young people.
I am always impressed by the talent at Loyola, from watching the Black
History presentation, learning that the Boys Sr. Curling team won
ROPSSAA, both the Sr. Boys Hockey and Sr. Lady Warriors Basketball
Team captured their second consecutive ROPSSAA Championships and
a gold-medal ROPSSAA win in Cross Country. Congratulations - 30
ROPSSAA Championships in 7 years is something to be proud of! Like
the Loyola website quote says: Get Active...Get Involved...Make it
Happen. Go Warriors Go!!
Sincere congratulations to our Warriors for winning championships in
curling and hockey! As well, congratulations to our students who have
done very well in our technology competitions. A big thank you to our
students who reach out to the community to help in times of need.
Thank you to student council, administration, staff and parents for their
time and dedication to attend the council meetings.
All parents and guardians of Loyola students are welcome and
encouraged to attend the final 2011/12 council meetings: May 7 and
June 4!! You do not have to be a council member to attend.
Our new school is moving along very well. Mr. Giancola met with a
committee at the City to discuss traffic and busing concerns. Mississauga
Transit tells us that once they know the need for transit to the new Loyola
they will be able to address transit concerns. The 4.8 kilometer walking
standard applies to the new Loyola. If you have any questions about
school busing you are welcome to contact STOPR at
http://www.stopr.ca/ or 905-890-6000. We are very excited to see the
numbers of programs to be offered in the new Loyola! Registration has
gone very well and it continues.
ATTENTION
Thank you to the Loyola Catholic School Council for providing the
seminar on bullying presented by Mike Neuts. Mr. Neuts spent the day
at Loyola and did 4 presentations, two assemblies for the students, one
for the staff and one for the parents. He also met with our student leaders
to discuss ways to prevent bullying in schools. Mike tells a sad but
powerful story about his son who was killed at a very young age through
bullying.
PARENT COMMUNITY OF LOYOLA
At our LOYOLA: MOVIN’ ON OUT Reunion on
May 11, there will be door prizes & we will
be running a raffle. We are hoping that many
of our parent community will consider
donating a prize to draw that evening.
Your Loyola Council works very hard on your behalf. Thank you to all
council members for your dedication. I encourage all parents to attend
council meetings.
All proceeds generated at the reunion will be
used for the many needs of our New Loyola.
Sending my thanks to our Administration team of Mr. Giancola, Ms.
Antonutti and Mr. Clarkin and all of the Loyola staff who are dedicated
to the students and go above and especially to those who go above and
beyond to help with many extracurricular activities which are so crucial
to the whole education of our students.
Any prizes you could donate would be
appreciated. They can be
dropped off at our main office.
By the time you read this Easter will be over but I do want to wish all of
you a blessed Easter season. May this year bring you good health and
happiness. And may the good Lord always hold you in the palm of His
hand!
Thank you in advance for your
generous support of our Loyola
community.

Latest News from Your
Student Council!
From the Guidance
Department

Graduating Students
As school has picked up from March Break and the students are getting
back into their regular schedules, Student Council has been planning out
a very busy few months as the school year is quickly coming to an end.
• Senior students who will be graduating this year must complete forty
hours of community service.
• Senior students who have applied to university and/or college should
log on to the OUAC and/or OCAS site(s) and review the grades data
that has been transmitted, received and processed. If changes are
required, please contact your guidance counsellor AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE. The transmission of mid-term marks will be made
before the end of April. If you are taking a night school course this
semester, please take your mid-term report card to your counsellor so
that the grade can be recorded and transmitted to the universities and
colleges to which you have applied.
To welcome the students back from their week off, Student
Council held another very successful and enjoyable Jell-O
eating contest on all lunches for students to participate in.
After the long weekend off for the Easter holiday, we also
held our first healthy school barbeque of the year! On
our April civies day, with special thanks to Mr.Roque,
students were able to purchase a healthy and
delicious lunch provided by Student Council!
Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to
make this event a huge success! Also to celebrate
Easter, our first ever egg obstacle race took place during all lunches
where students took on the challenge of balancing a hardboiled egg on a
spoon while making their way through an obstacle course.
• Information about scholarship opportunities arrives in the
guidance office each day. Check out the scholarship binder
in the guidance office. Notices are also posted in the cafeteria
as
well
as
on
the
school’s
website
at
http://www.dpcdsb.org/LOYOL/Guidance/Scholarships.htm.
Scholarships are awarded at all levels for students of all disciplines
and backgrounds. Academic achievement and high marks are not
always mandatory for eligibility. Many college and university
scholarships are not awarded because nobody applies for them. It is
worth the time and effort to apply.
Student Council has also been planning various events for the end of the
year including, Culturefest, X-Awards and the very much anticipated
Spirit Week in May. I am very happy to say that Student Council has
planned one of the best year end events yet and it is sure to be a great
way to close off the year!
As we continue to plan out these last few months at Loyola, we hope that
you the students enjoy them as much as we enjoy planning it for you!

was the club’s best bake sale ever
with lots of homemade treats and
fabulously decorated cupcakes and
cookies. The money raised will go
towards the adopted children in
developing countries through the
registered charity Chalice.
Loyola is proud to present its biennial celebration of
multiculturalism. This is a long-standing and
wonderful tradition in the school dating back to
1984. The magnificent Parade of Nations starts
along Burnhamthorpe Road at 5.00 pm and doors
open at 5:30. Students and staff have been busy
creating the following pavilions:
Canada,
Aboriginal, France, India/S.E.Asia, Caribbean, Africa,
Latin America, the Middle East, Italy, Poland,
Croatia, Ireland, Philippines, Ukraine, The Orient,
and Portugal. Specially designed and decorated
pavilions will offer displays of cultural artefacts as
well as samples of delicious food. On stage,
entertainment will reflect the cultural diversity of
Loyola in dance and song. The evening will end with
a fabulous fashion show of all the colourful cultural
attire from around the world.
HOPE began its Lenten project with
an appeal to the homeroom classes to
help raise funds for One Child, a
registered charity of youth taking
action against the child sex slavery.
In October, the students attended a
powerful presentation from the
founder, Cheryl Perera, and
members from H.O.P.E. were
inspired to fundraise to help this organization protect children. The funds
raised by Loyola will help build a facility to house children in their
rehabilitation from their traumatic experience. For more information,

“P.U.S.H” (People United for Success and Hope) is a program that gives students
that have fallen off track a second chance. If you are looking to improve certain
skills like leadership skills, communication skills, and punctuality skills, then
P.U.S.H is the place for you. This semester, the P.U.S.H class has a major focus on
Aboriginal Studies, not only in the classroom but also on a Post- Secondary level.
George Brown College offers a dual-credit program in Aboriginal Studies and we
have an amazing opportunity to take part. The credit can be applied to a high school
credit as well as a college credit.
This semester we have been on multiple trips, like The Royal Ontario Museum with
focus on the aboriginal art and the Tribal Vision Dance Workshop. We also attended Sheridan
College to receive the teachings of a Native elder. One trip that stood out was the Dog Sledding
Outdoor Experience. They attended with students from Philip Pocock Secondary School and were
later split into two groups. One group went snow shoeing while the other experienced the dog
sledding. After both groups concluded, they all returned to a bond fire for refreshments of hotdogs
and a dessert of marshmallows cooked over an
open fire before their trip back home.
It is clear that the P.U.S.H program is offering more
than just experience. This program is developing
skillful and well-rounded students who are ready to
impact and influence their surroundings. There is
no doubt that these students are qualified for
whatever the future has in store. P.U.S.H should
definitely be implemented in schools throughout
the Canadian School system. This program is truly
one of a kind.

After extensive training,
the Link Leaders will run the Grade 9
Orientation Day, leading small groups of Grade
9 students through various activities, assisting
them in reading their timetables and taking
them on a tour of the new Loyola. Link Leaders
will also help with various activities for the

Leader, the more successful he/she will be in
Grade 9!
Applications for next year’s Link Crew
leaders will be due Friday May 27th. We are
looking for students who will be in grades 11 or
12 as of September 2012. You will be a good
Link Leader if you are an enthusiastic,
responsible, and committed student who takes
initiative and gets involved at Loyola. As a
Link Leader, you will have a tremendous
influence on our new Grade 9 students and you
will learn many valuable leadership skills in the
process. This will be a great experience and
you will have lots of fun!
If this sounds like you, be sure to apply to be

The Chess Club has been working extremely
hard, practicing for two hours on Mondays and
Wednesdays since January 2012. This game
requires tremendous concentration, dedication,
patience and strategy. We have many talented
and skilled students at Loyola who have
mastered the art of Chess. Six of the club’s
members will be attending a Board wide
tournament at Our Lady of Mount Carmel SS. on
May 18th, 2012. Mr. Roque leads the Chess Club
practices and is very proud of the progress he has
seen with all the members. We wish the club

It’s a Unity Thing
On Thursday February 16th, 2012 the Loyola Black History Month Committee presented its 3rd
annual showcase for the Loyola community called It's A Unity Thing. It was a night filled with
drama, song, dance and spoken word. This year’s show was written and produced by Aaron
Tesfagiorgis, Diondra Filicetti, Sandrine Ntibarigobeka and Daveon Clarke. As a result of their
hard work and dedication the students were able to send a clear message that in order for a
community to truly survive Unity is the name of the game! With the success of this year’s show,
the BHMC was able to donate a cheque to Sickle Cell Ontario in the amount of $433.00. Ms.
Cornwall, Ms. Isaacs and Ms. Mohipp would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the
students on a job well done!

Out and About with P.I.P.
By: Andrew Jurski - Student
On Tuesday, March 27, I went to St. Augustine Secondary School in Brampton to the
Skills Competition. I entered the “setting the table” event. I practiced setting a fancy
table setting in the P.I.P. classroom for weeks before with Mrs. Boily and Mrs. Moir.
I had to learn how to fold a napkin shaped like a crown. It was easy for me. There
were plates, white and red wine glasses, cutlery and yellow flowers to sprinkle around
the table. I went there in a cab on Tuesday with Mrs. Moir. I was wearing black
pinstripe pants, a white shirt, belt, bowtie and nice shoes to look like a professional
waiter. I made it to the finals and I won first place. Everyone cheered and clapped
for me. I got a gold medal, a certificate and a t-shirt. I enjoyed visiting and watching
the other students competing in woodworking, automotive, baking, cooking,
cosmetology, landscaping, construction, and robotics. I had a great day at St.
Augustine.

Each month, our Grade 10 Spanish class at Loyola has the
opportunity to cook a traditional Latin dish which represents the

Mexico and prepared “quesadillas”. During the month of March, we
learned about Spain and enjoyed a delicious “Tortilla Espanola”.
Coming up in April we are planning to cook “arroz con pollo”,

French workshop and cultural experience at the Lula Lounge in Toronto
On April 17th, our Grades 9 & 10 Core French students had the opportunity to attend a workshop
and get a cultural experience at the Lula Lounge in Toronto. In addition to the workshop, the
students enjoyed their lunch at this famous downtown lounge. Thanks to Mrs. Pace for organizing
the trip.
Quebec City Winter Carnival
This past February, a group of 36 students went on
a four day trip to the Quebec City Winter Carnival.
During this action packed trip, the students had a
blast participating in dog sledding, snow tubing at
Village Valcartier, skiing/snowboarding at Mont
Ste-Anne, visiting the Ste-Anne Basilica, the
Montmorency falls & the Carnival site. A lot of
good memories were made for these outdoor
lovers. Thanks to Ms. Danko-Dumais, Mr. Beattie
& Mr. Bronson for coming as supervisors and to
Ms. Therrien for organizing the trip.

Europe Trip 2012
During this past March Break, a group of 14
students went to Europe to visit 3 amazing cities:
London, Paris and Barcelona. The group left on
Thursday March 8th and came back on Saturday
March 17th. Although London was interesting, the
students enjoyed Paris and Barcelona more. They
experienced the European culture, the high speed
train and a special night sleeping on the Euro Train
from Paris to Barcelona. The visit to the FC
Barcelona museum and soccer club was definitely
memorable. Our travelers had the opportunity to
practice their French and Spanish language skills
and to learn more about architecture, history, geography and religion. Thanks to Mrs. Solorzano,
Mrs. Danko-Dumais and Ms. Therrien for organizing and supervising the trip.

ROPSSA Curling Champions
Our Senior Boys Curling team had the best
season ever in the school's curling history. The
team went undefeated during their regular
season. On March 20th, in a thrilling double
overtime against Lorne Park, our Warrior boys
were victorious in bringing to our school the
ROPSSA championship trophy for curling. The
week after the March Break saw our team travel
to the Niagara Region to compete against the
rest of the top ranked teams in Ontario at the
OFSAA curling championship. Our team, lead
by skip Connor Rooney included Adam Kimber,
Senior boys curling team in Niagara
Jacob Weatherbee, Daniel Johnson, Matthew
Matteazzi and Matthew Nossotti. The boys
played with unwavering Loyola spirit and sportsmanship. We look forward to seeing 4 members of
our team back next year (as Daniel goes on to post-secondary studies) for another run at ROPSSA
and OFSAA. The coaches (Mr.Longo, Mr.Rab, Mr.Rooney, Ms.Rockwood, Mr.Fraelic and
Mr.D'Souza) are very proud of all four of our school curling teams. A big thank you goes out to our
school's staff and out administration team for their continued support. GO WARRIORS!!

Senior Boys Hockey
Another hockey season has come to a close
here at Loyola and once again the Senior
Boys Hockey Team did not disappoint. It
was a year to remember. The Senior Boys
Hockey Team were a force to be reckoned
with in both league and tournament play.
The boys competed in two very prestigious
tournaments and came out victorious in
both, capturing the gold in the annual
Mahler Classic and Cabernet Cup. The
season was just as successful as the boys
finished the regular season loop with eight
wins and two losses. The stage was set to
ROPSSAA gold medal champs!
repeat as ROPSSAA winners. In the
championship game, the boys prevailed
and hoisted the ROPSSAA Championship trophy for a second straight year and set their sights on
OFSAA. Going into the provincial tournament the boys were seeded second overall in the province
and competed hard in their round robin games to advance to the quarterfinals. The end result was
not the desired one, but the boys came out with their heads high. The members of the Loyola Senior
Boys Hockey Team not only competed in the highest levels of competition with great skill, desire,
and passion; they also exhibited a tremendous amount of strength, determination and discipline.
Through the rigours of a long season, the boys carried themselves with integrity and pride, and
exemplified, through the many levels of competition, that they are a class act. They represented the
school, coaches, team, and each other with great respect. We wish our graduating senior players all
the best as they move on to the next stages of their lives. The tremendous season was a result of
individual commitment to a group effort. The only disappointing thing about the entire season is
that it had to end. Congratulations Warriors!
