Principal’s Report
By J. Giancola
At this time next year, Loyola will be in the new building. This new school will offer nine of the
twelve Ministry Technological courses such as: Cosmetology, Hospitality, and Health Care. The
school will also have an all-purpose sports field, three gymnasiums and a lecture hall.
September started off with many activities within the school community. We began the school year
with a school mass at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church. Our LINK Crew was busy mentoring our
grade 9 students and introducing them to the school. We also had an all candidates meeting for the
provincial elections in our library, after which our students had an opportunity to participate in
Student Vote. Finally, we had representatives from Ontario Colleges visit us to discuss programs for
our senior students.
October was a very busy month with a number of student presentations such as: Child Slavery,
Mental Health Presentation, Haitian Dancers, Holocaust Display and Gwynne Dyer. We also
celebrated our students success at the Loyola’ Awards Night and enjoyed a student talent show called
“School of Rock”.

Chaplaincy Report
D. Smibert
Welcome back everyone!
Fall is upon us and the Chaplaincy program here at Loyola is up and running for the new school year. I would first like to welcome Father Silvio to
the Loyola school community. Father Silvio is the new Associate Pastor at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church. Father Silvio has taken over from Father
Joe Gorman. We, as a school community, are very thankful for the work of Father Joe over these past three years and how he made such a positive
impact. We wish him all the best.
Father Silvio celebrated our opening school masses on Tuesday, September 27. Thank you for being part of the Loyola community. We look forward
to working with you this school year and beyond.
The retreat program has begun. The Grade 9’s, 10’s and 12’s started right away in September and the Grade 11’s will
start in November.
This past summer, we lost two former staff members to cancer - Debra Courville and Eileen Fleming. On October 4th
we gathered our school community together in the school chapel to remember their lives and the impact that they had
on Loyola.
As we move ahead throughout this year, may we always be aware of the less fortunate around us and
continue to respond to the needs within the school community.

School Trustee
By Laurie Eschli, Co- Chair
Sharon Hobin, Trustee, Wards 2 & 8 and Vice Chair
Congratulations to the following members of the 2011-12 Loyola
Catholic School Council:
Time, as ever, is moving very quickly and we are now looking at midterm report cards. Since last I wrote to you I would like to bring you up
to date on what is happening in the board and of course, at Loyola. The
new school is moving along at what seems, record speed! It will be a state
of the art building with the latest of technologies as well as all the latest
green initiatives. We are still slated to open September 2012. In general,
we have had a very smooth start up at Loyola and all the schools in the
board. We are still considered a growth board but as you know we are
seeing decline in the south, east and west Mississauga. The good news is
we are over projections in many of my elementary schools which is great
news. So for the over 85,000 students and over 10,000 employees this
has been a very good start. We are continuing to retain over 96% of our
students from grade 8 to grade 9. Our Full Day Learning is to capacity
with some students on waiting lists. We are seeing a steady flow of
students who are moving to the Catholic system which is a recognition of
the value of Catholic education.

Families in
Need of
Financial
Assistance
(New Policy)
Loyola has now partnered with the Salvation Army in order to help
out any of our families in need of financial assistance. In order to
receive assistance from the school, parents must
contact their child’s Vice Principal and then
register with the Salvation Army.
This September, we have begun the full implementation of the New
Healthy Food Policy in our secondary and elementary schools; a
significant change for many in our daily practice. More information will
be forthcoming as we work through this year. Trustees also approved a
policy on school fees that is shaping our practice starting this September.
More information on this subject will be coming your way. We are also
gathering information around school fundraising and along with the
Ministry of Education will be formulating a new fundraising policy for
schools in the near future.
One of our largest investments this year is in the hiring of
a total of 37.5 qualified individuals to better service our
identified students as Education Resource Workers. Our
investments in school based resources for this September
has been $1.5 million for Science textbooks to support
student achievement and $2.0 million for text books for
various subjects. All of these funds came from our
accumulated surplus, as directed at the December 14,
2010 Board Meeting, for expending this fall. In addition,
we have launched our new Community Studies Project in
Grades 7 and 10, which will provide students with an
understanding and appreciation of this province and this
region and the role Catholic Education has played in the development of
our communities.
Congratulations to Loyola and all of our DP schools for their excellent
EQAO results. While we know that EQAO is a snapshot of the students’
work it does give us some of the data we need to make decisions about
program improvements and new initiatives needed to improve student
achievement. While the ministry cut budgets in textbooks and technology
we were still able to install 212 Smart Boards in our schools as well as
refresh over 800 computers. A total of 3000 desktops in secondary
schools received memory upgrades.
I have had opportunities of late to see Loyola students present to the
board of trustees the Loyola Link program as well as see Loyola students
and staff join and support teams, clubs, outreach projects and community
activities. The Loyola Catholic School Council is always welcoming
parents to their meetings and thanks to them for all of their hard work and
dedication. As ever, a big thanks to Monsignor Shiels and Father Silvio
for their constant support. Congratulations to MPP Harinder Takhar for
winning the Mississauga Erindale seat and Charles Sousa for winning
Mississauga South seat in the Provincial Election. I look forward to
working with each of them.
Please do not hesitate to contact me. I know it is very early but as I may
not have an opportunity, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2012! May
the good Lord always hold you in the hollow of his hands.

Loyola Remembers...
This past summer, our Loyola community lost two founding members of Loyola
Catholic Secondary School with the deaths of Eileen Fleming & Debbie Courville.
Both Eileen & Debbie were at Loyola from the very beginning in 1978.
Eileen Fleming served as our head of guidance from 1978 until her retirement in June
of 1997. She took the lead in guidance as we became a high school in the mid-1980s.
She was a good friend & mentor to so many teachers through the years.
Debbie Courville taught both phys. ed. & French during her 22 years at Loyola. She
was also our phys. ed. dept head. She coached both basketball & soccer for many
years. She left Loyola in 2001 to become a consultant in Halton & finished her career
at the Ministry of Education.
Both of these ladies lost their battles with cancer this summer. They both made major
contributions to education in general & Loyola in particular.
Eileen Fleming
We thank Almighty God for blessing us with their influence & friendship through the
years.

Dufferin-Peel Students Continue to
Shine on Latest EQAO Tests
Denise Brand, Student Council President
Recently released EQAO test results for primary (Grades 1-3) and junior (Grades 4-6) assessments
of reading, writing and mathematics, and the Grade 9 mathematics indicate that Dufferin-Peel
students continue to meet or exceed provincial averages.
My fellow students, welcome back to another
exciting year at Loyola! We hope you had a
restful summer and are excited about the new
year. Student Council is very happy to
announce that we have planned out an amazing
year for you all filled with events that you are
sure to enjoy.
September was a busy month for everyone, as
we were settling into the new school year and
getting back to our usual school routine. On our
first Civies Day, we let the students enjoy some
music on their lunches to set the tone for the
upcoming year. A
school BBQ was also
set up for the students
on October 20th with
help from teacher and
student
volunteers.
Student Council also
put together our annual
haunted house to
celebrate Halloween at
the end of October for all grades in the cafeteria.
Students lined up on their lunches and were
taken through the haunted house. It sure was a
scary sight for all!
Jumping ahead, Student Council is looking
forward to our annual semi-formal which will
take place for our grade 11 and 12 students on
November 17th at Le Dome banquet hall in
Oakville.
I speak for everyone on council when I say that
we have planned an amazing year for all
students and we can’t wait to see you come out
and take part in the excitement!
Some of the improvements this year over last year are as high as 6% and 10%. This is great news
for our students and shines a light on the hard work of faculty, staff, administrators and trustees in
aligning system resources to support all learners.

While this year’s results are impressive, results over the past several years provide further evidence
that Dufferin-Peel students continue to improve over time. This is great news, but it doesn’t mean
we cannot do even better. Board staff will further analyze the EQAO results to provide support to
schools, students and parents/guardians to ensure that more students continue to improve in all
assessment areas. Each school has its own plan, which will be reviewed in the context of its
students’ test results, to improve students’ skills in all subject areas. School plans include strategies
to assist all students, including intervention and reinforcement for students who did not achieve the
provincial standard.
Check your school website, or contact the principal for your school’s EQAO results. Additional
information can be obtained through the EQAO website at www.eqao.com.

H.O.P.E. is Here
By A. Zagar
The Loyola club called H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere) is
back and making a difference in the lives of other people. After some
fun getting-to-know-you activities as well as some brainstorming of
ideas for charity projects throughout the year, the HOPE calendar is
filling up quickly.
College and University Visits
During the past few months, representatives from Ontario universities
and colleges visited Loyola’s grade twelve students to discuss postsecondary programs and the admission process. Students should
continue
their
research
by
visiting
http://www.dpcdsb.org/LOYOL/Guidance. This website has valuable
information and links to various post-secondary institutions and other
helpful sites.
We have already enjoyed some hands-on activities like creating crafts for
Meals on Wheels and caring for the Peace Garden in front of the school.
In October, we turned the cafeteria into a giant
bakery after school as members formed teams
to bake, from scratch, tasty—and healthy—
treats for our annual October Halloween Bake
Sale to raise money to sponsor two children
through the Chalice Catholic charity. Club
members also wrote letters to our adopted
children to make a personal connection.
University Applications
The deadline for university applications is January 11, 2012. The
application is completed on line at www.ouac.on.ca. Personal
Identification Numbers (PIN) are required to access the COMPASS 101
application. These numbers will be distributed to students as soon as
they become available. Workshops will be offered to students to explain
the application process, and a tutorial on the procedure is available at the
OUAC site. Students should also visit www.electronicinfo.ca, a database
of all Ontario university programs.
The club will continue making a difference throughout the semester. If
you are interested in seeing what the club is all about, and would like to
meet new people, drop by Tuesday after school in Room 141. New
members are always welcome. We meet every Tuesday and we H.O.P.E.
to see you there!
College Applications
February 1, 2012 is the due date for college applications in order to
receive equal consideration.
The college application is completed
online at www.ontariocolleges.ca. Special identification numbers are not
required, and workshops will be held to explain the college application
process. There is also a tutorial available at the Ontario colleges’ site.

Loyola Christmas Hamper
Drive 2011
Reminder to all students graduating in June 2012
The deadline for submitting evidence of the completion of 40 hours
of community service is Thursday, January 12, 2012.
Completing 40 hours of community service is a graduation
requirement, mandated by the Ministry of Education. Students will
not receive a high school diploma, nor will they be able to proceed to
college or university, until this requirement is met.
M. Heist, on behalf of the Loyola
Christmas Basket Committee
Preparing Christmas baskets for needy families in our
community is a long-standing tradition at Loyola Catholic
Secondary School. Each year, the school receives the
names of families from St. Vincent de Paul Society and from our own
school community. The staff and students in each homeroom class are
asked to contribute to the creation of these baskets. Last year Loyola
raised over $7000 in food, and gift vouchers to help those in need in our
community.
Registration Forms for the 2012-13 School Year
During November and December, counsellors will be providing
information about course selections to both grade eight students from
Loyola’s family of elementary schools and to current Loyola students.
Special evening presentations will be scheduled for parents of
elementary school students. A curriculum night and information session
on Thursday, January 19, 2012 will include the following events:
A Christmas hamper will assist families with dinner and gifts throughout
the holiday season. Since individuals have unique tastes, different
cultural celebrations as well as preference in the purchase of the toy that
their children are wishing for, we are asking for monetary donation or
vouchers to allow the families to purchase their own Gifts, and food
items. This is not a food drive.
• General overview of the OSSD at 7:00 pm in the cafetorium.
• Department displays in various classrooms from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Registration forms are due Monday, February 28, 2011 for equal
consideration.
Students and their families can make donations through homeroom
classes. Any corporate sponsorship or donations would be greatly
appreciated. These donations go straight to families in our school and
our community. Our chaplain, Mr. D. Smibert and our Youth Worker
Mrs. Bishop personally deliver many of the baskets. There is no middle
person. Your contribution goes directly to the families.
Take Our Kids to Work Day
On Wednesday, November 2, the grade nine students spent the day at
their parents’ workplace to observe them at work and to gain a better
understanding of the employability skills required for success. The
experience can help them make appropriate course selections and clarify
their goals for the future.
The Christmas Hamper Drive will begin on Monday, December 5th and
end on Friday, December 16th.

DECA DECA DECA
By Jakub Stach, student
This year’s DECA is already off to an explosive start. Each year, members of DECA participate in competitions that prepare them
for the business world. The team is focused on training students for oral and written competitions, and helps focus on business
skills such as presentation, confidence, public speaking, and time management. Students are also given in depth knowledge on
marketing as well as different aspects of business, which in turn helps them perform better in class. Members have been
successfully participating in the sale of SPC cards within the school community, helping raise funds for the club as well as the
various charities that it supports. The Written Competitions took place on November 1st and were followed by the Regional Oral
Competitions for the Marketing Cluster which took place at Gordon Graydon Secondary School on November 12th. We encourage
parents to come out and support the club by participating in the Annual DECA Silent Auction during second semester’s parent
teacher night. SPC cards will continue to be sold throughout lunches in front of the cafeteria, and at the business office. The cards
are priced at nine dollars. The club allows students to interact and network with their peers, teachers, business as well as the
community at large. Most importantly DECA helps students “Make a Difference”, which is the motto here at Loyola
Catholic Secondary School.

Youth Rally
By E. Fijan
On Thursday, October 13th, a select group of students attended the Mississauga South Family of
Schools Youth Rally at Pope John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre. This event brought together
students from 4 secondary schools and 22 elementary schools to participate in various faith-based
activities. Students from Loyola had an opportunity to mentor elementary students from St. Louis,
St. Margaret of Scotland and St. Helen. After a busy morning of ice-breaker games, everyone was
treated to a performance by the Resurrection Dance Theatre of Haiti. The afternoon was filled with
many fun activities that encouraged the students to focus on the blessings we have in our own
communities. All of the youth ambassadors were asked to spread what they learned at the rally
within their school communities. Stay tuned for some faith initiatives from Loyola’s own youth
ambassadors – Allie Duggan, Lynda Zolcinski, Nicholas Amorim, Justin Lachine, Alejandra
Gutierrez, Cassandra Lima, Matthew Matteazzi, Matthew Nosotti, Hollie Boodram-Panesar,
Evelyn Tewolde, Christine DeCaire, Jaclyn Tomlin, and Bradley Thompson.

People United for Success and Hope
By Michal Groszek, P.U.S.H. student
P.U.S.H. (People United for Success and Hope) is an alternative setting for students who are in grade 12. We are all leaders,
bringing the school community together with the many different types of initiatives that we organize every semester. From
“Boy’s Night In” to “Hoopfest”, we are always planning something!
For the 4 years that P.U.S.H has been around, we have planned and executed many events for the school and even the
community. Many of you have probably walked by our class, looked in and thought “what do they do in there?” The
answer is “a lot”. From all of the events we plan, the trips we take, and the involvement in community outreach, we really
have our work cut out for us. From the weekly trips to St. Clare to the food drives for the homeless, P.U.S.H. is here to
make Loyola and the community one giant family!

Link Crew Welcomes the Grade 9’s to Loyola
The grades 9’s were welcomed by the student leaders
and staff advisors of the Link Crew program on
Orientation Day. An awesome human tunnel of grade
11 and 12 students cheered wildly as the newest
members of Loyola community streamed into the gym
for a morning assembly of ice breaker activities. After
turning the gym floor into a maze of intermingling
grade 9’s, the senior student Link Leaders were sent in
pairs to separate classrooms to get to know their small
Crew of grade 9 students through a variety of fun and
team building activities. The Link Leaders then
escorted their Crew on a tour of the school building before being fed by Student Council who hosted
the grade 9 BBQ.
On the Friday September 9, 2011, of the first week of school, the fifty Link Leaders, wearing their
easily identifiable blue shirts, served ice cream or popsicles to the grade 9’s and sat with their Crew
during the 3A lunch to check in, share their experiences of the first week of high school and create their
own identifiable crew logo. An assembly to help the grade 9’s complete their Community Hours of
Service is planned for November and other supportive events will occur throughout the year.
Link Crew is a year-long program designed to help the grade 9’s integrate smoothly into high school
life. The Link Crew Leaders have been awesome as ambassadors and mentors to the grade 9’s. The
staff coordinators, Ms Antonutti, Ms Fijan, Ms Matyszczuk, Ms McFadden, Ms Piercey and Ms
Solarzano would like to thank the senior students listed below for attending the two-day training
sessions during their summer holidays to plan for Orientation Day. Loyola looks forward to more Link Crew activities during the school year.

Mississauga-Erindale MPP Candidates Student Vote
Debate at Loyola
Program
By E. Odozor
By E. Odozor
On Thursday, September 29th, all four
Mississauga-Erindale provincial candidates
addressed Loyola students and staff in a town-hall
meeting. The question and answer session,
organized by the Teacher-Librarian, Mrs. Odozor,
gave our students a closer opportunity to meet the
candidates, hear them share their mandates and
watch them discuss the issues. Our students
demonstrated great citizenry. They asked questions
about the Ontario educational system, employment
Loyola meets the provincial candidates
and health care. Our students wanted to know each
candidates stand on Catholic education. In
attendance were David Brown (PC), Otto Casanova (Green), Michelle Bilek (NDP), Harinder
Takhar (Liberal), and Sharon Hobbin (Trustee). The session was moderated by Brad Thompson, our
student Vice President.
Loyola Library once again opened its doors for
our students to experience the voting process by
giving them a hands-on experience. 219 Loyola
students participated in the 2011 Student Vote
Program, a program that educates young people
about voting. Since results have shown that less
than 50% of Canadians participate in the
electoral process, it becomes imperative that
young Canadians are reached early in life and
given the opportunity to develop the habits of
informed and engaged citizenship. This Student
Vote Program helps to create that awareness.

Out and About with P.I.P.
By Katrina Erb, Student
In September we celebrated so many summer and September birthdays. We sang Happy Birthday to Andrew, Sean, Pat,
Daniella, Kirsten, Ms. Boily, Ms. Dugo, Ms. Firlotte, Ms. Iwasiw, and Ms. Nordt. Chocolate cake was enjoyed by all.
We visited The Griffen House in Ancaster. We saw the orginal Griffen House ruins which were destroyed by a fire. We
had a great tour of the Griffen House Museum where we enjoyed apples and apple juice. Then we stopped for lunch
at Maple View Mall.
The PIP class participated in the Bocce Ball Tournament at St. Marcellinus. It was a beautiful day and everybody did
great. The Warrior Bocce Ball team got ribbons. Ms. Dugo took a lot of pictures. We all had a lot of fun.
In October we had a Thanksgiving luncheon. We ate broccoli, ham, pineapple, potatoes, and corn. We had brownies
for dessert. We celebrated Spiro’s birthday. We visited Stonehaven Farms where we went on a hay ride and picked out
pumpkins. We had a lot of spooky fun at our Halloween Party, everyone dressed up and we played spooky fun games.

On Friday, October 21st, LIFT – Loyola International Friendship Team – hosted its first meeting in the
library. Newcomers, either from a different school or a different country, spent their morning getting to
know one another and learning that being new really isn’t that bad!
The meeting started off with some games and activities, after which everyone was more comfortable
with one another. After the fun activities, we watched a video that showed us other newcomers who
explained their experiences – both good and bad. The students in the video explained how they got
through their first few months in a new school and new country.
Once the video was over, the principal – Mr. Giancola, and the vice-principal – Ms. Antonutti, came to
say hello and welcome us to the school. Mrs. Zagar, Mrs. Barnet, and Mrs. Bishop from Guidance came
to offer their support as well.
To end off our morning, we shared a pizza lunch and took a group photo to celebrate
our first LIFT meeting.
LIFT is a student-run program, with the support of the ESL teachers. LIFT aims to make newcomers feel more comfortable as they
adjust to their new lives in Canada. Many exciting and fun activities are coming up this school year.
