An End of School Year Prayer
Lord God,
our school has shared many things this year.
We were linked by common tasks
and time together.
This month we say goodbye
and end our school year.
Lord, bless our students, teachers and staff,
especially those we will not see again.
Keep each of us in your care
during the coming summer
and throughout our lives.
Guide our steps and strengthen our hearts
until we gather once again
in your Kingdom.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Principal’s Message
Only a few weeks remain of this present school year. On
behalf of myself and the staff, I would like to thank the
parents for your support, cooperation and assistance
throughout this past school year. With your support and
the help of our School Council and Parish team, we are
able to continually strive to fulfill the goals of Catholic
Education.
Our grade 8 students will soon be graduating and
celebrating the completion of their elementary education.
St. Michael’s Catholic Secondary School awaits their
arrival in September. I wish all of our graduates continued
success and happiness as they embark on the next stage of
their educational journey.
A very special thank you to Mrs. Proctor, who manages
the office with dedication and professionalism. I truly
appreciate all she does to make the office run smoothly.
Also, I wish to acknowledge Denis White and the extra
efforts of all of our custodians who take great pride in
maintaining our school at a pristine level. Also to Denis
who is always outside in the mornings and after school to
ensure the safe arrival and dismissal of our students. He
definitely goes beyond the call of duty and it is truly
appreciated. May the Lord bless all of you and keep you
safe throughout the summer holidays.
If any of you are moving this summer, I want to wish you
all the best and may God bless you and see you safe in your
new home/school. To those who are returning to Holy
Family, we look forward to seeing all of you back, safe and
sound this September.

Happy Father’s Day
There are so many fathers to honor; grandfathers,

one or more of these fathers has earned our love. To
all fathers in our school community, from all of us at

As this school year comes to an
end, the School Council would
like to say a Big Thank You to the
students and their families for all
their support. We have been able to fund some
wonderful things for students this year due to the
generous fundraising efforts within our school
community. Just a reminder to please have your
Dress Code Surveys back to the school by June
11th. We are asking every family to participate in
this survey. Have a Voice! The final School Council
meeting of this school year will be on Monday, June
15th at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. As always all parents
are welcome to attend.

First Day of School
The first day of the new school year for
students is Tuesday, September 8th.
School begins at 9:15 a.m. Signs will
be posted around the school directing
children to their grade level meeting place. Our
hours of operation will continue to be the same as
this year, 9:15 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. The school will open
its doors the week of August 31st for new school
registrations. Please note that JK students do not
begin school on September 8th. Parents of these
students will be receiving a letter from the teacher to
schedule your kindergarten appointment about your
child’s transition to school.
For all our volunteers this year, please remember to
join us on Wednesday, June 17th at 12:15 p.m. for a
volunteer appreciation gathering.
Do you have an hour or two that you could spare
during the week? Do you enjoy working with young
students?
Then why not become a parent
volunteer? Your talents, skills, experience and
knowledge are a great asset. Why not share them
with young children? We encourage parents to
volunteer their time if possible at Holy Family School.
If you would like to join our dedicated group of
volunteers, please remember that a Criminal
Reference Check must be submitted to the school.
The necessary forms can be picked up from the
office at your convenience.
Student Medication
Lost and Found
We ask that all students who have medications
stored in the office pick up their medications on the
last day of the school year – Friday, June 26th. Also,
as per Board policy, we need the medical forms
updated on a yearly basis. As such, we would ask
you to make sure that if your child has a medical
condition that requires use of an epipen or puffer, or
any other type of prescribed medication that you
request the relevant medical forms before the end of
the school year so that you can have them filled in
by your child’s physician during the summer. Please
ensure that any medications that are to be stored at
the school are sent back with your child on
September 8th, along with the completed forms.
It is amazing what we have
overflowing in our yellow lost and
found bin. Please stop by the
school during the last two weeks
of the year and have a look at the
tables in the front hallway if your child has some
clothing items missing. Any items remaining at the
end of June will be given to charity.
Volunteers at Holy Family
We at Holy Family School are very
fortunate to have many parents
who volunteer their time to make
a positive difference in the lives of
our children. Some of the areas
that our parents have helped out in
are: driving teams to tournaments, helping out with
the pizza and hot lunches, fundraising, assisting in
classrooms, working with individual students,
helping in the library, All-Star Reading, being on the
School Council, to name but a few. Volunteers
enhance the school community in a variety of ways
and our gratitude goes out to them. We hope to see
you back next year!
Criminal Reference Checks
Anyone volunteering within the school for any
duration of time, (field trip supervision, coaching,
reading program, pizza days, etc.) is required to
provide an original Criminal Record Check that is
satisfactory to the Board prior to the commencement
of any duties. The Criminal Record Check must have
been executed within the preceding 6 months of
receipt and include a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Anyone who has not previously submitted a Criminal
Record Check who is considering volunteering is
strongly encouraged to apply for a Criminal Record
Check as soon as possible to avoid delays. Please
obtain the necessary forms from the office as soon
as possible. Please note that you will be required to
provide two pieces of government issued ID, at least
one of which is photo ID.

Library News
Thanks to all students, parents, and
staff for supporting the book fair
during Education Week. It was a
great success and nice to see so many enthusiastic
readers excited about their purchases. Library book
exchange ends on Friday, June 12th and all books
are due back on this day. Notification letters of
outstanding books will be sent home after this date.
Payments for lost books are refunded if a book is
subsequently located. Have a great summer.
Help! Lost Books!
Every year we lose a number of
textbooks and library books. You will be
surprised to know that these losses add
up to a significant amount of money when looked at
from a total school perspective. Each text or library
book can cost as much as $50 to $75. Many times
these materials are at home and parents are not
aware that their child has not returned these items.
We respectfully ask that you assist your children in
taking the time during the month of June to look
around your homes to assist us in ensuring that all
Holy Family material is returned. This will help to
eliminate calls home later this month when we try to
account for missing items.
If books have been lost we ask that either they be
replaced or money sent in to purchase a
replacement. If a book is subsequently found,
money is reimbursed. Holy Family library books can
be identified by a bar code on either the front or
back. Textbooks have the Holy Family school stamp
on the inside cover. Thank you for your cooperation
and support.
Photos at School Events
Just a reminder, that all PEDs
are to be turned off and not used
within school premises or during
school-sanctioned
activities.
The digital and social media age,
as well as enhanced privacy
legislation,
has
created
pressures and issues that did
not exist in the past. The taking of photos and videos
of individuals is considered to be the collection of
personal information under privacy legislation.
Parents, students and visitors and not allowed to
take pictures on school property. Your cooperation
with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
EcoTeam News
Our end of year message from the ECOTeam
We have had another
successful year with our
ECO Team at Holy Family
School. Thank you to all of
our members who have put
forth a great effort to attend
our
weekly
meetings,
making posters to promote
our events, taking part in
assemblies and making announcements. Our
biggest projects this year were to continue with our
Boomerang Lunches, to encourage the use of
reusable water bottles and to promote the “idle free
zone”, to encourage parents to turn off their vehicles
while dropping off or waiting for their child.
Our members took part in a number of events over
the school year. They had a couple of energy and
garbage audits throughout the year. They did
weekly spot checks to make sure that all classes
were trying their best. There was National Sweater
Day, Walk to School Day, Earth Hour, a celebration
of Earth Week, which also included
our yard clean up. Our group also
sorted and boxed the many milk
bags that were sent in. These bags
will all be used to make mats for
people to sleep on in Sierra Leone,
Africa
and
other
countries
worldwide as part of Dr. Simone’s Missions. We
also had the “Great Gulp”, to promote drinking our
tap water rather than using plastic water bottles.
Thank you to some students from Mrs. Posteraro’s
class who helped design and paint a rain barrel
sponsored by the Town of Caledon. Using rain
water for our gardens also promotes good
environmental benefits. For the rest of the year we
will be working on our gardens. We would also like
to thank our recycling crew who help out each
Wednesday and Friday to collect our recycling from
the classrooms. A special thank you to Denis who
always has everything ready for us.
We would also like to thank classroom teachers who
made contributions with the projects, school trips
and assignments that we were able to use as part of
our certification process. We had our site visit this

year at Holy Family. This was an opportunity for our
school to celebrate the success of our ECO Schools
program and showcase our environmental
accomplishments. Please take a moment to check
our Eco Schools board later in June to see our level
for 2014 - 2015.
Our members of the EcoTeam are
very dedicated to helping make
our school and our Earth a better
place to live and grow. Keep up
the good work and remember to
always be mindful on ways to
protect our Earth. We only have
one Earth and if we love and take
care of it, we will always have it.
Sincerely, your EcoTeam leader, Mr. Read, and the
members of the EcoTeam
Dress Code
With the warmer weather soon upon us, we remind
students that Holy Family School is committed to
standards of neatness, modesty and good taste.
Students are encouraged to dress modestly at
school. We ask that students not wear: spaghetti
straps, muscle shirts, halter-tops, very short tops or
very short shorts. Furthermore, we remind students
that pants are to be worn around the waist. These
requests are directed more towards our junior and
intermediate students. A little more latitude is given
to younger students. T-shirts with inappropriate or
offensive language or pictures are not allowed at
school. Students who wear unacceptable clothing to
school may be asked to telephone their parents to
arrange to have a change of clothing brought to
school for them. We thank parents and students for
your cooperation.
Protecting Your
Skin From The Sun
Overexposure to the sun can
cause skin damage. We remind
students to take precautions to protect their skin
during recess times. The following are some
suggestions to help protect the skin:
Wear protective clothing to cover the skin.
Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and skin.
When possible, stay out of direct sunlight.
Wear sun block; the higher the protection factor
number, the greater the protection.

Safety Tips For Cyclists And
Motorists
The Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) wishes to remind cyclists and motorists
to share the road.
With the summer fast
approaching these are good reminders to both
cyclists and motorists. In a 2012 Ministry of
Transportation Report it is estimated that 630,000
Ontarians cycle on a daily basis and about 2 million
Ontarians ride a bike at least once a week during
spring, summer and fall.

Follow the law — it’s the safest
way to ride. Bicyclists have the
same rights and duties as drivers
and need to follow the same
traffic laws.
Be predictable — ride in a straight line, signal
turns and check behind you before turning or
changing lanes.
Come to a complete stop at every stop sign and
red light.
Ride with caution around parked cars and
position yourself in the field of vision of a
motorist pulling out of a parking space.
Be conspicuous — ride where drivers can see
you, use lights at night and wear bright clothing.
Be aware — anticipate the next move of
drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists. Watch
for debris, potholes and grates.
If you are a beginner or are returning to
bicycling, seek out clubs or bicycling advocacy
organizations in your community for tips on safe
riding, instruction, and group rides to improve
knowledge and confidence.
Ride Ready — tires need air, brakes must work,
chains should run smoothly, and quick release
wheel levers must be closed.
Carry identification and cell phone, emergency
cash, as well as repair and emergency
supplies.
Wear a helmet.

Safety Notice
Please remind your children that playing in and

storm sewers through the outfalls, and entering
storm sewers through access covers is dangerous
and can lead to a fatality. Children should be aware
that:
water flows in storm sewers and water

toxic gases may be present
tragic falls could take place;
access is restricted and therefore, rescue
attempts are difficult.

Just Bead It!
Tour for Humanity
The Just Bead It! Group
would like to thank the Holy
Family School community
for supporting us during our
fundraising efforts this
year. After two amazing sold-out sales, the group
raised $1125 which will be donated to ShareLife.
The Just Bead It! group would also like to extend a
special thank you to the Holy Family School Council
for their generous support.
By covering the
expenses of beading materials, they afforded us the
opportunity to stage a second sale, and thereby
double the amount of our donation.
We welcomed Tour for Humanity from the Simon
Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. A big bus
was parked in our parking lot on May 22nd and our
grades 4 to 8 classes had an opportunity to go out
and be part of a presentation: the grades 4 to 6
students learned about how they can make a
difference in the world and how they can become a
hero; the grades 7 and 8 students learned about
Canadians and how some groups have been
oppressed. We thank the Center for coming up and
educating our students. We also thank the Parent
Council for sponsoring this wonderful experience.
What began as a Lenten act of service, turned out to
be much more than what was originally expected.
This was mainly due to the amazing and tireless
dedication and commitment demonstrated by a core
group of Grade 4 students, and the rest of the Grade
3/4 class who were involved in making and selling
rosary bracelets. Congratulations to all of these
students for a job well done! On a daily basis, they
truly demonstrated many of our Catholic virtues.
Thank you also to Mrs. Angelosante for all her hard
work and dedication to the group.
Virtue of the Month -Fairness
ShareLife Fundraiser
Holy Family sold ice cream
sandwiches during the month of
May to raise money for ShareLife.
We will continue to sell them until the
first week of June. So far, we have
raised over $700. Thank you to all the
students and teachers who bought
one.
National Denim Day
Thank you to everyone who took part in
National Denim Day. A big thank you to
those who donated. We raised $225 for
the CURE Foundation for Breast Cancer!
In June, we are celebrating the virtue of “fairness”.
Fairness, the belief that everyone deserves an
opportunity to succeed, is not always about making
things exactly equal. Some people need a bit more
time, space, money, and support to have an equal
chance to succeed. And they deserve that chance.
Jesus spent a major part of his time on earth
showing us about the preferential option for the poor
and weak. He spent an extraordinary amount of time
showing how to follow God's rules, the rules of the
kingdom. The sick, the lame, the blind, the bad
sinners all need a fair chance to succeed - to
overcome their disadvantages and disabilities in
order to succeed. In today's terms, that could be
called good sportsmanship. A good sport makes
sure the rules of the game give everyone an even
chance to participate. Not everyone has to win.
Everyone deserves a chance to be in the game.
A Fair Person…
Listens to all sides before forming an
opinion
Shows good sportsmanship at all times
Knows that the same rules apply to
everyone
Refuses to twist rules to avoid
consequences
Works to bring about peaceful solutions
to problems
Cheers on the successes of others
Can balance their own rights and
responsibilities with those of others
We believe that each individual is a unique gift of life from God, and we believe in the innate spiritual goodness of all peo ple.

Bullying Prevention Corner
Tips for parents:
 Help your child practice using assertive
behaviours (stand tall, make eye contact,
speak clearly, use “I” messages)
 Role model assertive behaviour in your
relationships with family and friends
 Encourage your child to be assertive and to
get adult help when needed
The focus for
June
is
on
communication skills – particularly
assertive communication. Assertive
communication
is
defined
as
behaviour that demonstrates an ability
to stand up for oneself, express feelings and
exercise rights while respecting the rights of others.
Assertive communication skills help students deal
independently with conflict, prevent situations from
becoming bullying and stand up for others who are
not assertive.
