This year Pope Francis calls on all believers to practice the works of mercy and to listen to God’s Word. We as believers are called to practice the Lenten rituals of prayer, fasting and almsgiving (giving money or other help to the needy). Doing these three rituals, during this “Year of Mercy”, will help us to grow closer to God and to keep Lent as a holy season. This Lenten season, let us be open to God’s word, avoid treats and give alms. This “Year of Mercy” our school goal is to collect 40 bags of sugar, 40 boxes of salt, 40 bags of rice and 40 jars of oil. Our Faith Ambassadors will be bringing these items to Dr. Simone and will be given to the less fortunate. Holy Family School will gather together at mass throughout the Lenten season. All parents/caregivers are welcome to join us. M. Clarot We believe that each individual is a unique gift of life from God, and we believe in the innate spiritual goodness of all people. 1 March Break Immunization Clinic #2 March Break this year falls during the week of March 14th – 18th. We believe that each individual is a unique gift of life from God, and we believe in the innate spiritual goodness of all peo ple. 2 Class List Formation —2016-17 School Year We will soon begin the process of making up the class lists for next fall. This is a complex procedure which takes into consideration not only the needs of the individual child, but frames those needs in the context of the larger classroom group. In each class we strive for a balance of learning styles, a balance of gender, a balance of learning needs and a crosssection of abilities. The current teachers of a grade, support staff and administration all take part in the process. If you wish to provide input into the process, please take into consideration the following guidelines: Input must be made in writing to the Principal no later than May 2nd, 2016. Requests should be made in terms of educational contexts, e.g. your child’s learning needs/strengths/style, information not already known to the school, best learning environment. Please do not make requests for specific teachers as staffing is always tentative and changes can take place between now and September. ALSO LETTERS MUST BE WRITTEN YEARLY. Requests made in the past will not be considered for the up-coming year. Therefore, if you have made a request in the past and your request has not changed you must put it in writing every year. Follow us on Twitter @HOFAM_dpcdsb Are You Moving? If you know your family is moving out of our boundary, we would like to know. Each year, a number of families move out of the area and it assists us in our planning purposes to know whether students will be attending our school next year. Please inform the office at your earliest convenience. Student Attendance and Punctuality Thanks to our many parents who regularly call the school to report their child(ren) are going to be absent from school. Your phone call to the school saves our secretary a tremendous amount of valuable time in trying to track down unexplained absences. Remember that you can call the school twenty four hours a day to report your child’s absence. Students and parents are reminded that being punctual for school is a very important habit to follow! Our school entry times are 9:15 a.m. for morning classes and 1:00 p.m. for the afternoon classes. Students who arrive even a few minutes late for school not only disrupt classes already underway, but put themselves at a disadvantage, because they need to “catch up” with classmates once they arrive into class. All students from Junior Kindergarten to grade 8 who arrive late to school must report to the main office to get a late slip before going to class. E.Q.A.0. Testing – Grades 3 & 6 Dismissal Time Provincial assessment in reading, writing and mathematics will take place during five days that occur between May 25th and June 8th for all students in grades 3 and 6. Kindly avoid booking dental, doctor, etc. appointments during that time period. Visit DPCDSB on the web for Board and School profiles http://www.dpcdsb.org/EQAO Parents please be on time to pick up your child at the end of the day at 3:45 p.m. Please remember we do not have supervision for your child after this time. We want to ensure that your child is safe at all times. We believe that each individual is a unique gift of life from God, and we believe in the innate spiritual goodness of all peo ple. 3 EcoTeam News Rio Olympic Day Thank you for wearing your sweaters for National Sweater Day in February. In March our school will be participating in the Great Gulp on March 22nd. This is an activity to help create awareness about the importance of Peel drinking water in our lives and to promote action to improve water resources. This event will also help promote the use of reusable water bottles, rather than using plastic water bottles. On Friday, February 19th, Holy Family School travelled to Brampton Soccer Centre to experience Rio Olympic Day. Students were split into their divisions (FDK, Primary, Junior, Intermediate) and they participated in a variety of sports activities. Some events included handball, field hockey, an obstacle course, and golf. This event was free of charge to all students thanks to Mrs. Clarot who covered the cost of the Brampton Soccer Centre. A special thank you to the Parent Council who paid for the bussing and also provided the fresh apple slices which the students enjoyed as a snack! We would also like to thank all the parent volunteers who helped make the day possible. This month we will be celebrating EARTH HOUR, on Saturday, the 19th of March, from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. We will celebrate this event at school during the week of March 21st to 24th. This World Wildlife Fund sponsored event is an invitation for all to join in recognition of the need to do what we can to curb Climate Change. Once again, being aware of the need for small changes in our own habits, and making public statements by participating in these events gives local and national governments a glimpse into the political will to see change. Thank you to all students and families who continue to develop habits around Boomerang Lunches. We would like to remind all that composting is not an option at school, however it is AT HOME. All students are encouraged to bring lunch leftovers and garbage home, reducing the need for twice daily garbage collection in our schools, wasting bags and time. Here at the school, our recycling bins, are always available however if you commit to bringing home the garbage and compostable items, the picture will become clearer of how much of lunch packaging is just waste: foil papers, wax papers, clear wrap (i.e. Saran Wrap), small disposable yogurt containers, and the list goes on. A good link to check out, which helps you to know how to sort your garbage according to the Region of Peel waste, is wheredoesitgo.ca. Have a great March Break and may we look forward to the spring and warm weather to encourage our trees to bud and our plants to grow. Junior Basketball On Tuesday, February 16th, 2016, our junior basketball teams competed in the Bolton school’s tournament at St. John Paul II. The girls’ team of Sophia, Natalie, Sabrina, Samantha, Catherine, Julia and Sarah improved with each game but ran into very tough competition from the other schools. Our boys, however, went undefeated, after impressing everyone with their passing game. They advanced to the Family Tournament on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016. At the Family Tournament the boys played with a lot of heart and determination and placed second overall. Congratulations to Noah C., Noah M., Julian, Luca, Matthew, and Jaydon. Thanks to Andrew, Daniella and Milena for working with the players and having them so well prepared! Thank you also to coach, Mr. Buckley, for all his time and dedication to the teams. Free Throw Competition Congratulations to Julian D., Julian F. and Sabrina L. These three students represented Holy Family in the second round of the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw competition recently at St. Michael's High School. Sabrina and Julian F. are moving on to the regional competition in the weeks to come. Congratulations! We believe that each individual is a unique gift of life from God, and we believe in the innate spiritual goodness of all peo ple. 4 Carnaval The week of February 15th was our Carnaval Week. We had a red, white and blue day, a jersey day and a tuque day. We had daily draws for prizes and Class Bingo. Congratulations to Mr. Mazanik’s Grade 8 class who won the Bingo. Congratulations also go to our daily prize winners. We raised about $100 from the week for ShareLife. We hope everyone enjoyed the activities and we thank the community for your continued support. Youth Faith Ambassadors Our next visit to the Davis Center is Friday, March 11th. We will be doing an Easter craft with our Grandfriends. The Youth Faith Ambassadors are doing a great job planning and talking with the seniors. We thank them for their continued participation. Virtue of the Month --Kindness In March we celebrate the virtue of kindness. God has given us the gifts of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus. As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown concern for our welfare and our feelings. We have all been given the fruit of the Spirit called kindness. Kindness can only be seen through actions. It is not enough to say I will be kind or I am kind. We must show that we are kind by our words and our actions. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at showing kindness to everyone we meet. Bullying Prevention Corner In March, the bullying prevention key message is that Bullying Can Be Stopped. We cannot tolerate bullying. We need to let others know when we see bullying happening. We realize that bullies come in all shapes and sizes and that those who are being bullied have not done anything wrong. Bystanders can either make or break the bullying. If we refuse to become involved in the bullying, by laughing, encouraging, etc. then the power of the bully is diminished. Furthermore, if we can safely stand up for those that are bullied, then the bully’s power is further reduced. One thing that we all must do is to let an adult know when bullying is happening. As we mentioned last month, this is not tattling, but rather reporting an unsafe behaviour in order to help someone. We all have a responsibility to stop bullying and if we all work together we can stop bullying.
