March 18, 2014 Volume 3, No. 27 SPEAKING OF IPE… In last week’s HERALD you read about our IPE course – interprofessional education – that our health professions students are taking in the fall and spring semesters. The IPE effort is led by a variety of faculty from across these professions. Conversations around the unification of our health programs have been going on and represent the conceptual foundation of those interprofessional programs. Our health programs at Xavier are on a journey – literally – with today as our starting point of using current resources and buildings most efficiently, with tomorrow as the next point for leveraging partnerships within the community to assist in our health programs, and then “down the road” for determining future resources needed to support our health programs, including the prospect of a new Health United Building (HUB). According to Dr. Mark Meyers, Dean of the College of Social Science, Health and Education (CSSHE): “The conversations provide the context around which to build our interprofessional programs. These conversations generate the ideas and curriculum initiatives that are becoming the new programs which make up the development pipeline. … We want to be sure to strike the proper balance between keeping the conversations moving forward and not pushing them to the forefront too soon. On the community front, for example, we are constantly being approached by people who would like to partner with us, and we are always happy to listen to the conversations.” A group of health professions faculty members has been working with Dean Meyers, and our Associate Dean, Dr. Dennis Long, to start that think-ahead journey. This diagram represents the overall philosophy of our health professions for the future: WIN/WIN for Students and Community XU COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICE XU HEALTH IPE XU HEALTH PROFESSIONS HOME NOTE: There will be NO ISSUE NEXT WEEK on Tuesday, March 25 due to our students and faculty attending the ACHE Congress in Chicago and attending the Alumni Dinner that evening.
