Moncur We live in a wonderful country, full of opportunities and freedoms we often take for granted. You can be sure that Canadian Veterans do not take our situation for granted. In times of war, armed conflict and peacekeeping, young men and women sacrificed all they knew, all the comforts, love and safety of home in order to defend the rights and freedoms of others. Head Secretary C. Moore Assistant Secretary T. Gout We owe it to those who have served our country to learn, to understand, and to appreciate the task they have undertaken. Generations of Canadian Veterans, through their courage, determination and sacrifice have helped to ensure that we will live in a free and peaceful country. On November 11th at 10:45 a.m., the St. Aidan community will come together for a Remembrance Day liturgy to pause, pray and say “thank you” in remembrance of our Veterans. Superintendent S. Steer Trustees D. B. D’Souza F. Di Cosola Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi Parish Guardian Angels Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; Pastor where there is doubt, faith; Fr. Jan Gogolewski where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; Daily Prayer for November Mass Times Sat.: 5:00 p.m. Sun.: 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Masses are held at: St. Edmund Campion and where there is sadness, joy. Let us now pray . . . for the grace and strength to be people of conscience – people who know the good and decent way to act and then choose to act that way. Amen O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. 275 Brisdale Drive Brampton, Ontario L7A 3C7 Enlightened by Knowledge, Enriched by Faith Catholic School Council ECO Update Welcome and thanks to our Catholic School Council members: Chair: M. Cold and Flu Season As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. Please be reminded that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Regional Health Unit Resources Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home. Flu Clinics Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics. Brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective ways of removing plaque from the exposed surfaces of teeth. Effective tooth brushing takes a minimum of two minutes and is recommended twice daily, once in the morning and especially before bedtime. Remember 2 for 2 is what you do! Brush your teeth a minimum of 2 times each day for 2 minutes each time. Brushing at bedtime is most important. If the food is left on the teeth at bedtime it can be converted into useable food for the bacteria to form acids, thereby decreasing the PH levels and causing decay. Also during the night there is a decrease of saliva and therefore less buffering of acids. Supervision and adult assisted brushing is advised for children. When choosing a toothbrush look for one that has soft bristles, a small head which makes it easier to reach every tooth, especially those at the very back of the mouth and a bulky handle which makes it easier to grasp, especially for children. Here are some important steps to follow in caring for your toothbrush: rinse toothbrushes after each use and allow to air dry replace toothbrushes when they become frayed or worn, approximately every three months Remember that toothbrushes should not be shared with anyone! Brushing your tongue will help freshen your breath. Debris and bacteria can collect on your tongue and cause bad breath. For more information, visit the health unit websites: For more information please call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700. Peel Health website: http://www.peelregion.ca/health Important Information RE: WOWBUTTER Wellington Dufferin Guelph Health website: www.wdgpublichealth.ca Direct links to the above information can be found in the Parent Section of the Dufferin- Peel Catholic District School Board website at www.dpcdsb.org Child and Family Services Act The Child and Family Services Act compels educators to report any issue that may compromise a child’s welfare. If school staff suspect any issues that may affect a child’s safety, the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) must be contacted. It is not the role of the educator to investigate – that is the role of CAS. WOWBUTTER is a soy product that simulates peanut butter and is sold as a peanut butter alternative. Staff at our school board have consulted with the Anaphylactic Society and Peel Health Department to ensure due diligence as to whether this product should be allowed at school. To that end, it is the recommendation with the support of both the Anaphylactic Society and the Peel Health Department that students do not bring WOWBUTTER to school as it is impossible for staff and/or students with this life threatening allergy to determine whether the item is peanut butter or an alternative. Thank you for your continued support in making St. Aidan a safe environment for all our students! Our Catholic School Heritage Each month we will highlight some key questions/answers related to our Catholic School Heritage. 1. How long have Catholic separate schools been educating Catholic children and contributing to the public good in Ontario? For about 170 years. In the early 1800s there were separate schools in many cities, towns and townships. In Peel, three separate schools opened before Confederation (1867): St. James in Malton in the 1830s, St. John’s Agricultural College (1861) and St. Patrick’s (1861), both in Wildfield. 2. Has the Ontario government always supported separate schools? Yes, as did its predecessor, the United Legislature of Canada East (now Quebec) and Canada West (now Ontario) during its total life from 1841 to 1867. One of the first pieces of legislation it passed in 1841 was the Common School Act, with a separate school clause. 3. Why did the United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West keep improving separate school legislation? It responded to Catholic parents, trustees, bishops and priests, editors of the four Catholic newspapers, members of the business and professional world, all of whom argued for legal and financial rights for separate schools.
