PORTFOLIO PREP - PAINTED STILL LIFE NAME:_______________________ LESSON FOCUS: This lesson focuses on observational painting skills, color mixing and texture. VOCABULARY: Color: An element of design that identifies natural and manufactured things as being red, yellow, blue, orange, etc. Intensity: The strength, brightness, or purity of a color. The more intense the color, the less it is weakened with admixtures of neutrals or its complementary color. Painting: A picture or other image composed of applied colors; the art of occupation of producing such works. Still life: A group of inanimate objects arranged to be painted or drawn; also, a painting or drawing of such an arrangement. Texture: The element of design that refers to the quality of a surface, both tactile and visual. Value: An element of design that relates to the lightness and darkness of a color or tone. PROCEDURE: Cut a piece of oak tag the same size as your completed paper still life. Using tracing paper and/or the light table, trace and transfer your still life onto the oak tag. You should have an exact duplicate in line. Using tempera or acrylic paints, paint your still life so that it matches your paper one. You should try to match the values and intensities of the colors. You should try to duplicate the textures and patterns of the paper. No oak tag should be showing when you are finished. These two still life's will work as companion pieces when finished. These are good portfolio pieces. MATERIALS: Your finished paper still life (summer assignment) 16”x 20” oak tag (should be the same size as your paper still life) Tempera or acrylic paints (try to match the kind of paper you used) Assorted brushes Water containers Paper towels
