The first records of Albu manor date back to
the year of 1282, making it one of the oldest
in Estonia. Started by Adam Johann Schrapffer
in 1652, the present and third manor house is
a baroque style one-storied building.

Restoration of the building, which started
in 1995, revealed foundations of a previous
manor, probably a knight's secured dwelling
house or a small stronghold. A fragment of the
mediaeval wall is now exposed in the base of
the building.
The oldest written records of the manor
buildings date back to 1742. The central axis
of the principal facade is emphasised by a
projecting attachment with a triangular
frontoon. The manor house in its present shape
is thought to have been existing already at the
end of the 17th century.
In the interior a baroque stove of white and
blue tiles and classicist stoves of white tiles
have survived. In the basement there are rooms
with a barrel vault and cross vaults, supported
by foursquare piers.
Before the 1750s, manor houses were relatively
plain. Imposing buildings were exceptional,
as the Great Northern War (1700-1721) had
destroyed them to a large extent.
In 1742 the manor went over to the von
Douglases. Placement of the ceiling plafond
on the painting, as well as plastering of walls
might have happened at the time of Gustav
Otto von Douglas.
In addition to the paintings in the vestibule
another ceiling plafond was discovered, the
baroque style painting of which has high artistic
value and is harmonic with the general style of
the building, accomplishing the collection of
valuable works of art of the manor.
At the restoration of the manor house all
the unique details of the building have been
preserved or used as interior decoration
details in consideration with the present day
requirements.

KUMU ART MUSEUM
Museum of Living Art
The building, designed by the Finnish architect
Pekka Vapaavuori, opened to the public in
February 2006. In 2008, Kumu was named the
European Museum of the Year by the European
Museum Forum.
This modern museum building offers
excellent opportunities for art exhibition, art
conservation and art education, as well as for
holding various cultural and corporate events.
In addition to a total of 5000 square metres
of exhibition space, Kumu also includes an
auditorium with 245 seats, a public library,
an education centre, a cafe and restaurant,
a gift shop, a cosy courtyard and an exclusive
roof terrace. Kumu hosts over 150,000 visitors
a year.
EXHIBITIONS
The permanent display of the museum
introduces Estonian art from the 18th century
to the 1990s. The first part, titled “Treasury”,
displays the classics of Estonian art from the
beginning of the 18th century until the end of
the Second World War. The second part, titled
“Difficult Choices”, introduces Estonian art
from the Soviet period.
In addition, Kumu holds approximately 12
temporary exhibitions each year that display
classical and contemporary, local and
international art.

Peeter Kuum founded Woodman in 1999 with the aim of producing quality contemporary
furniture for the mid to high-end market, building a business that now operates over
7,000 sq m of facilities across two factories in Estonia.
For Kuum, creativity and innovation are the cornerstones of Woodman’s continued success
- not simply producing high quality designs at good value but constantly developing new
products for its retail partners. He first approached designer Leonhard Pfeifer in 2006
after seeing his work at the Ambiente fair in Frankfurt. Together they have gone on to
produce strong individual items and complete ranges that are sold through major retailers
across Europe and North America.
Kuum is firmly committed to manufacturing sustainable products. In recognition
of this commitment Woodman was awarded FSC Certification in July 2010. The
Woodman factory is governed by European Union legislation including employer and
environmental laws. In addition the factory is SEDEX registered and meets responsible
and eithical practices in labour standards, worker health and safety, the environment
and business ethics.

Leonhard Pfeifer
Furniture Designer, London
The son of an antiques restorer, Leonhard Pfeifer grew up surrounded by beautiful
furniture. ‘Wood is my passion,’ he says. ‘I am endlessly fascinated by the beauty of
the grain and its remarkable versatility as a material.’
Originally from New Zealand, Pfeifer completed a degree in Industrial Design at The
Queensland University of Technology in Australia before moving to London in the early
2000s. He has designed ergonomic accessories for Vitra, Herman Miller and Knoll and
worked on projects with Studio Conran and Linley. Pfeifer established his studio in
2003, creating furniture and home accessories for design-led retail and contract markets.
Pfeifer’s work is characterised by sleek lines, functionality and a strong focus on the
lifestyle and requirements of the consumer. ‘The mark of great design,’ he says, ‘is when
function, form, materials and manufacturing come together – elegantly.’
Pfeifer’s passion for design has been recognised with a number of awards, including
Design Guild Marks, Prix Les Découvertes and a European Consumer Choice award.

Restoration of the building, which started
in 1995, revealed foundations of a previous
manor, probably a knight's secured dwelling
house or a small stronghold. A fragment of the
mediaeval wall is now exposed in the base of
the building.
The oldest written records of the manor
buildings date back to 1742. The central axis
of the principal facade is emphasised by a
projecting attachment with a triangular
frontoon. The manor house in its present shape
is thought to have been existing already at the
end of the 17th century.
In the interior a baroque stove of white and
blue tiles and classicist stoves of white tiles
have survived. In the basement there are rooms
with a barrel vault and cross vaults, supported
by foursquare piers.
Before the 1750s, manor houses were relatively
plain. Imposing buildings were exceptional,
as the Great Northern War (1700-1721) had
destroyed them to a large extent.
In 1742 the manor went over to the von
Douglases. Placement of the ceiling plafond
on the painting, as well as plastering of walls
might have happened at the time of Gustav
Otto von Douglas.
In addition to the paintings in the vestibule
another ceiling plafond was discovered, the
baroque style painting of which has high artistic
value and is harmonic with the general style of
the building, accomplishing the collection of
valuable works of art of the manor.
At the restoration of the manor house all
the unique details of the building have been
preserved or used as interior decoration
details in consideration with the present day
requirements.

KUMU ART MUSEUM
Museum of Living Art
The building, designed by the Finnish architect
Pekka Vapaavuori, opened to the public in
February 2006. In 2008, Kumu was named the
European Museum of the Year by the European
Museum Forum.
This modern museum building offers
excellent opportunities for art exhibition, art
conservation and art education, as well as for
holding various cultural and corporate events.
In addition to a total of 5000 square metres
of exhibition space, Kumu also includes an
auditorium with 245 seats, a public library,
an education centre, a cafe and restaurant,
a gift shop, a cosy courtyard and an exclusive
roof terrace. Kumu hosts over 150,000 visitors
a year.
EXHIBITIONS
The permanent display of the museum
introduces Estonian art from the 18th century
to the 1990s. The first part, titled “Treasury”,
displays the classics of Estonian art from the
beginning of the 18th century until the end of
the Second World War. The second part, titled
“Difficult Choices”, introduces Estonian art
from the Soviet period.
In addition, Kumu holds approximately 12
temporary exhibitions each year that display
classical and contemporary, local and
international art.
