ART III - MINI LANDSCAPES NAME:_______________________ LESSON FOCUS: This lesson focuses on creating a series of three small paper collages using cut or torn paper that represents different qualities of landscapes. VOCABULARY: Collage: From the French coller, to glue. A work made by gluing various materials, such as paper scraps, photographs, and cloth, on a flat surface. Landscape: A painting, photograph, or other work of art which shows natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and lakes. Mixed-media: A two-dimensional art technique that uses more than one medium, for example, a crayon and watercolor work. PROCEDURE: Acquire a vast assortment of papers of different textures, thicknesses and colors. Look at several examples of landscapes by different artists. Consider color, light and texture as these apply to mountain ranges, the ocean, or the desert. Your landscape collages can be realistic, expressionistic, abstract, or symbolic. Do several idea sketches, focus on composition. Once you have three good ideas, begin making your collages. Use a watered-down white glue solution (two parts glue to one part water) to glue your paper down. Use the watered-down glue over tissue paper and thin papers. Apply the glue only to the reverse side of foil paper. If you wish, you may use other materials to add to your collages, such as string, yarn, felt, wire, etc. Craftsmanship is vital!!! Make sure everything is glued down, your collage should not fall apart. MATERIALS: Sketchbook 3 - 4”x 4” paper Assorted papers (tissue, construction, coated, metallic) Assorted materials (string, yarn, felt, etc.) Gel medium and/or glue sticks Paintbrush (wash out thoroughly with soap and water)
