DRAWING (2): SCRATCHBOARD
NAME:_________________
LESSON FOCUS:
This lesson focuses on creating a crayon scratchboard of an animal with a border that
incorporates pattern and repetition.
VOCABULARY:
Border: A margin or edge. A design or stripe in the margins of a page of a book or
illustration, etc.
Contour lines: Lines that define the outer edges of forms and surfaces within a form,
such as shapes or wrinkles or folds.
Pattern: The repetition of elements or combinations of elements in a recognizable
organization.
Repetition: The use of the same visual elements over and over in a composition.
Rhythm: A principle of art, it refers to the careful placement of repeated elements in a
work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat.
Scratchboard: Illustration board that has been coated with a chalklike substance that can
then be coated with ink. The image is then scratched into the surface.
PROCEDURE:
 Choose an animal to use as the basis for your design.
 On 12”x 18” manila paper, draw a border. Your border must be at least ½” wide.
Your border will be filled in using a pattern or patterns.
 In the center create a contour line drawing of your animal. You may zoom in on
the animal’s head and neck or zoom out to include the entire animal. Fill the
background in using a pattern or patterns. Look at the examples for ideas and
inspiration.
 Once you have a well-balanced composition, prepare your scratchboard.
 On white drawing paper, you may either trace your design or develop a more
random design using bright colors.
 Fill in this design with a heavy application of crayon (absolutely NO paper
showing).
 Once the paper is filled in, and your name is written clearly on the back, cover the
entire paper with black tempera paint. You may need more than one coat to cover
completely. Let dry overnight.
 Using a pencil, lightly trace your design onto the painted paper.
 Using assorted scratch tools, begin to scratch out your patterns revealing your
animal design. Be sure to use a variety of patterns.
