Independent Reading AIMS
Independent reading is an important part of our reading program. Each night you
should read for 15 to 20 minutes. At the end of your reading, please complete an AIM in
your reading journal. Please keep the chapter book you are reading and your reading
journal in the pocket of your AIM folder. The folder should go home each night and
returned to school each morning. Happy Reading!
AIM #1: What was the main idea of your reading today?
AIM #2: Which character did you like the best or the least? Explain why.
AIM #3: How do you predict the chapter (or book) will end?
AIM #4: If you were the author, how would you write the ending of this chapter or
book?
AIM #5: What part of the story did you find humorous or sad or exciting? Explain why.
AIM #6: What other titles do you think would be good for this story? Give 3 imaginative
titles and use correct capitalization.
AIM#7: Write 3 new words you have learned from this book and give their meanings…
or… Choose a sentence from your reading that caught your attention, copy it, and explain
its meaning.
AIM #8: Would you enjoy reading other books by the same author? Why or why not?
AIM #9: Make a connection between what happened in your story today and an everyday
event.
AIM #10: Make up 3 questions about what you have read today. Then answer each
question!
AIM #11: If you could change any part of today’s reading, what would it be? Why?
AIM #12: Illustrate an important part of what you read today and write a caption
explaining your picture.
AIM #13: Write a statement about one of your character’s traits. Give two or three
examples from the story to support your statement.
AIM #14: Write a persuasive letter to a friend explaining why they should or should not
read this book.
AIM #15: Free Choice: Choose your favorite AIM and answer it… or… Create your own
AIM and answer it.
