Christian – Presented by Mary Rauh May 7, 2015 1 MA ABE Strategic Framework and Distance Learning Ø ACCESS: Ensure that adults needing basic education have access to services Ø Increase access to educational services Ø Increase instructional intensity for students Ø NEXT STEPS: Prepare students for success in their next steps: college and further training, at work and in the community Ø Increase adult learners’ technology skills by providing opportunities to study online 2 FY 15 was a building year Ø No new CALCs were added to the DL roster in order to allow for a stabilization in service delivery and the start-up of the new statewide ABE professional development system. Ø QCC was awarded the grant for Distance Learning and Technology Support. Ø This year the DL Summit was organized by the newly formed statewide DL Team chaired by Eunice Snay and Mary Rauh with members from both DL Hubs. The team sought input from the field on important operational issues in DL through an online survey in February 2015 Ø There were 41 funded CALCs Ø 16 ASE CALCs : 14 Option #1, 2 Option #2 Ø 23 ESOL CALCs: 18 Option #1, 5 Option #2 3 Distance Learning ASE Learners Ø This year there was the full implementation of the KET Fast Forward curriculum. Informal feedback from students report liking this product. Ø 83 adults have enrolled in DL at the QCC Hub Ø So far students participated in1,865 hours of instruction Ø 7 students got their HiSET in FY15 4 Distance Learning ESOL Hub Ø 187 adults attended online courses at the Notre Dame Hub Ø So far students participated in 7,838 hours of online instruction • USA Learns Course #1 Completed: 40 • USA Learns Course #2 Completed: 20 • USA Learns Course #3 Completed: 10 5 New Programs in FY16 Ø 4 ASE CALCS : Cape Cod Community College, Lawrence Public Schools, Springfield City Library, and Springfield Technical Community College Ø 3 ESOL CALCS: Lowell Public Schools, North Shore Community Action Program, and Worcester Public schools Ø Total DL programs by FY16: 45 6 New in FY16… Ø The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act [WIOA] will begin to be implemented. WIOA supports the full integration of technology into teaching, learning, professional development, and system efficiencies. Ø WIOA requires states to consider how ABE providers “effectively use technology, services, and delivery systems, including distance education in a manner sufficient to increase the amount and quality of learning and how such technology, services, and systems lead to improved performance.” 7 More New in FY16 • EveryoneOn.org, is a non-profit broker of low-cost Internet service and devices. They offer partnerships with ABE Programs that pre-qualify adult education students, teachers, and programs to purchase the lowest-cost options for Internet connection available in their area.
