• Formed from cooled molten rock
– MAGMA forms INTRUSIVE igneous rock
– LAVA forms EXTRUSIVE igneous rock

• Formed inside the Earth
– Magma is trapped in pockets inside the Earth and cools slowly
– The slower magma cools the larger the crystals (course grained)

– The faster lava cools the smaller the crystals
