Mid Week Update for the week of May 2, 2016 The weather doesn’t feel like it’s May, but we have started the month splendidly anyway! Here’s what has been going on in our classroom: Math: Today we tested Topic 10. Next up: Topic 11, solving two-step word problems. We will solve problems with a variable. We call it an “unknown” and many letters are used (not just “x”). This topic will be a good review for all four operations. Look for the family letter about Topic 11 to come home tomorrow. Reading: We are continuing our biography unit. As a reminder, your child should be finished reading at least one biography of his or her living history subject AND have completed note taking by Friday. We have been reading additional biographies in class. Ask your child, “What other famous people have you read about? What were their crowning achievements?” Writing: We are continuing to write our fairy tale adaptations of Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have been story telling and acting out scenes in advance of writing. This helps us to add life-like details and tiny actions. Ask your child, “How is your adaptation different from the original? How does one change cause other things to change?” Science: Peep, peep! The chicks have arrived! We have 5 chicks and today we handled them for the first time. Yes, we even cleaned up after them! Ask your child, “What did you observe about the chicks today? Which breed of chick hatched and how are they different?” Homework: Tomorrow I will send home a rubric for how the living history poster and report will be graded. Students will be writing the rough drafts of the report in school starting Friday. I will be adding a link from my home page to all living history handouts if you need to refer to them at any time.
