Room 219 Update - Week of October 26, 2015
Dear Families,
Here is what we are working on in our classroom:
Math: This week we will wrap up our current topic and take the Topic 3 assessment on
Wednesday. While only the odd numbers are assigned on the practice assessment
given as homework the evening before the test, please remember that these problems
are almost identical to the questions on the actual test. It may be worthwhile to have
your child complete all of these problems as a way to study and practice for the Topic
assessment.
Reading: This week we will continue to analyze Opal in Because of Winn Dixie, and
talk about ways to develop deeper theories about our characters. We will also learn how
to make predictions using the theories that we develop! If you see your child developing
a theory about a character, ask them, “Why do you think that?” Encourage them to cite
specific evidence from their books, including things the character says and does.
Writing: Last Friday students proudly shared their published personal narratives with
their Grandparents and special guests! We had fun giving meaningful compliments and
enjoying the hard work of all of our fantastic writers. Our new writing unit is all about the
art of information writing, and we already created “Expert Lists” as a way to help
students think of topics to write about. This week students will learn ways that they can
organize their writing to make it meaningful to readers.
Social Studies: Last week we wrapped up our first science unit on magnetism and
electricity. Please sign and return the science assessment that was sent home on
tonight. Our first social studies unit will be all about how our community fits into the
world. Students will learn all about the hemisphere, continent, and country that they live
in!
Upcoming Events:
10/30 – Halloween Parade – 2:15-2:45
**Please remember to sign up for a Parent Teacher Conference via the link on Media
Elementary School’s website!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your
dedication to your child’s education!
Sincerely,
Kaylee Viscuso
