Room 219 Update - Week of October 19, 2015 Dear Families, Here is what we are working on in our classroom: Math: In Topic 3 students are focusing on using the Distributive Property of Multiplication to use known facts to help with solving unknown multiplication facts. Ask your child how they can break apart a harder fact (8x6) into two easier facts (4x6 plus 4x6) to figure out the answer. Reading: Last week we finished our first unit of study! We also completed reading Stone Fox. Ask your child about how the story ended. Warning: it was sad! This week we are diving into our second unit, which is all about analyzing the characters in our books. Our new read aloud is Because of Winn Dixie, and we will closely study the main character, Opal. Writing: This week students will continue to publish their final drafts of their personal narratives. I am so impressed with the difficult revision and editing work that they have done! We will celebrate our published narratives with our grandparents on Friday. Ask your child how they revised their ending to make it better. Science: This week we are wrapping up our studies of magnetism and electricity. We recently learned how to construct a magnet that can be turned on and off. Ask your child what this type of magnet is called! A study guide for this science unit was sent home today. This can serve as a tool to use to help your child study for the upcoming assessment on Thursday, October 22nd. Upcoming Events: 10/23 Grandparents’ Day (9:15-10:45) & October Scholastic book orders due Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your dedication to your child’s education! Sincerely, Kaylee Viscuso
