Masks have been used for many different reasons in many different cultures throughout the
world. They may be used decoratively to disguise the wearer and describe an unknown aspect of
their personality. Some are used in rituals and when worn, the person is thought to take on the
persona of the mask. For much of known history people have used masks for a variety of
different reasons. Whether they are used in theater, religious rituals, or worn into battle, masks
have been an important part of many cultures.
Your Goals…
 Create a mask that references you in some way.
 Find at least three examples of masks used by different cultures.
 Brainstorm about aspects of your personality that you may want to address in your mask.
 List the materials that you intend to use in the creation of your mask. You must use at
least three different materials.
 Plan how your mask will be made (step 1, step 2, step 3…).

like them? What are the used for (theater, ritual, etc.)?
 List and gather materials for your mask.
 How does my mask reflect my personality? Does it reference family history or cultural
background? Does it describe some part of my personality that people may not know
about? What are my likes and dislikes? How can I reference these in my mask?
