Pre-writing Questions
•
Write down at least three main points that Emerson makes in his essay “Self-Reliance.” Think
about the advice he gives and the way in which he thinks you should live your life.

Then, write down at least three main points that Ms. Chua made in her article. Think about the
beliefs she has about the way her children should live their lives.
•
Ask yourself the following question: do Emerson and Chua agree? Once you have your answer,
you are ready to write.
Writing the Letter

You are writing from the P.O.V. of Emerson!
•
Begin with the phrase, “Dear Ms. Chua,”
•
In the first paragraph, state whether or not you agree with her article. Remember, you are
Emerson! First person pronouns are totally acceptable. Then, explain your point of view from
“Self-Reliance.” Use at least one quotation from “Self-Reliance.”
•
In the second paragraph, use at least one quotation from Chua’s article to explain why you
agree/disagree with her philosophy.
•
Sign the letter, “Sincerely, Ralph Waldo Emerson.”
•
Make sure your name is somewhere on your letter.
