Conquistadores and
officials were granted
“encomiendas,” -gave
them tracts of land and
everyone on it.
In theory, the
encomenderos were
supposed to look after
and protect the people
,but in reality it became
legalized slavery.
These systems become
illegal in early 1500s.
Protector of the Indians
Bartolomé de las Casas spent 50 years of his life actively fighting
slavery and the violent colonial abuse of indigenous peoples. His
efforts help to bring an end to the encomienda systems.
