Winning the First three conFerence games, the Chokers looked promising, but injuries and lack oF reserve lose the rema1n1ng games· strength caused them to _ec Medak and Bob Smith were selected as All-Conterence players. Smith served as honorary ::='.)tain, and Medak was later presented the lnspirntional Award. The Coaches' Award was present _ to Ron Bridges. The 1951-52 Grays Harbor College basketball team and the teats that it performed on ti maple court will be remembered by sports tans ot this vicinity For a long time. This squad w considered one ot the best hoop aggregations to ever come out of the Harbor. The Chokers, with Dan Melinkovich at the helm, climaxed a splendid season by Flying Hutchinson, Kansas, and competing in the National Junior College Tournament in which th captured eleventh place. Melinkovich's club, in addition to their national recognition, claimed the Region Ill crown I defeating Vanport and Olympic Junior College. They also won the state title by trounci1 Yakima in two straight tilts, and they held the top rung in the Southern Division ot the state loc losing only to Clark. losses. At Linfield three speakers won places in the "tournament of champions": Gerry Larson took second place in oratory; JoLoyce Hunter, second in interpretative reading; and Layman placed third in extempore. At the National Meet, held in Pueblo, Colorado, the debate team of �lsie Schiller and Jerry Lay­ man placed third in a field of strong competition while Layman took second place tn extempore. Gerry Larson and Harold Warren also made good showings in their respective events. At the St. Martin's tourney, Layman and Shiller garnered another third place in debate. The climax of the season was the State Junior College Meet where the local group took six first place cups, two second places, and four third places to win the sweepstakes for the third consec­ utive year. Bob McCrea and Harold Warren finished a good season by taking second place in de­ bate at this final meet. Others contributing to the victory of the squad were Don �gge and John Blaine.
