freshmen, and will further explain

to be conducted tonight at 8:00
o'clock in (lie auditorium of Page hull,
according to Herbert Drooz, president
of the sophomore class.
Members of Myskania, senior honorary society, are invited to attend,
and will assist in introducing the
freshmen to the traditions and customs of State.
Freshmen will be escorted to the
reception by sophomore friends. They
will lie expected to enter by the side
door of liicliardsou hull, where they
will receive green identification tags.
Sophomores will wear blue name tags.
The program will open with the
singing of the Alum Muter, led by
Frances Stiidelmker, '30, student association song-leader, and member of
Myskania. Drooz will then welcome
the freshmen and Myskania will read
and exploit! inter-eluss rivalry rules.
The sophomores anil freshmen will
then proceed from the auditorium to
the gymnasium of Page hull, where
dancing will take place until 12:00
o'clock.
Allen Lewis, '36,
Wins High Award
At Commencement
Allen if. Lewis, '30, was announced
as the winner of the Wheelock scholarship a t the Commencement program
conducted in dune.
The Association of Academic Principals of New York state established
this award in 1931 in memory of
Charles Wheelock, a former president
of the association and for many years
a prominent figure in educational circles. The scholarship is given annually to the man in the sunyor class
having the highest all-around record
in academic work, extra-curricular activities, and potential success in the
Held of education.
Lewis is doing his major and minor
work in the chemistry anil physics
departments, and is a member of both
the Chemistry anil I'hysics clubs. He
is also a member of Kuppn Phi Kappa,
national education fraternity.

Students this year received the new
Student Tax collection plan very enthusiastically with it record of 220
students having paid their t a x of
$10.00 on Monday, the first day of
collection. This number is identical
with the number of students wjio
paid their t a x last year in the first
two days of collection.
On Tuesday, I 4C) cards were issued,
and on Wednesday, with freshman
registration, 270 of the class of 1939
paid their tax. The standing of the
various classes as the NEWS goes to
press is as follows: freshmen, 270
paid: sophomores, 90 paid; juniors,
J07 paid; seniors, 107 paid. Students
who have not paid their lux will lie
given another opportunity next week,
when the lax will be collected from
9:00 until 2:00 o'clock every day.
The 1935-30 budget, which was
passed in May by the student assembly, totals $13,113.87, which is an increase of $821.87 over the 1934-35
budget, but is still approximately
$2,000.00 under the 1933-34 appropriation. The total figure of the budget
was arrived at after each organization had reviewed their needs and cut
where possible to the lowest possible
figure.
This year, football has been incorporated into the budget for the first
time in over ten years, with an appropriation of $750.00. Intrn-murul
sports lire also receiving a larger appropriation on the budget this year,
with a total of $250.00, or an inereuse
of $175.00 over the 1934-35 appropriation. Music, association this year
will receive $800.00. as compared with
$000.00 in 1934-35, and t h e National
Student Federation appropriation for
1935-30 will be $144.28 for this year,
as compared with $75.00 for 1934-35,
Those organizations whose appropriations were cut woro the N E W S ,
from $2,000.00 to $2,512.40; Dramatics and A r t association from $1,200.00
to $1,000.00, and Myskania and Student Council, from $300.00 to $200.00.

Members of the class of 1939 will
be introduced to the extra-class activities of S t a t e college tomorrow
morning a t the Activities day program. The program will take place
in the Commons of Hawley hull beginning a t 8:00 o'clock, and is in
charge of Charlotte Itockow, '36.
Junior guide enptains will conduct
tours of groups of freshmen around
to the various activity tables, a t each
of which a college organization will
be represented. Representatives of
the various activities will explain the
work of their organizations, and
freshmen will be given an opportunity
to enroll for future participation in
the fields in which they are interested.
The program also includes refreshments and (lancing until 12:00 o'clock.
