E-News on the Lane Highlights from the week at Indian Lane February 8-12, 2016 Message from our Principal We managed to survive the snow and not lose any days in the process. Our fourth grade students participated in the NAACP Black History Month Poster Contest. A panel of teachers judged the posters and selected our winners. First place goes to Belle Petka, second place to Katie Brokken, and third place to Kate Stanton. All the students did a great job. Congratulations to our winners and all participants. From our Classrooms Kindergarten Kindergarten celebrated the completion of Reading Workshop unit 3. They reviewed all of their super reading powers, pledged to continue using their super reading powers, and were given a Super Reader Cape to wear whenever they read at home. Topic 6 in math was completed this week. The children learned what subtraction is and started some simple subtraction problems in Topic 7. They completed the week with a healthy Valentine celebration. Parent volunteers came in to help with the celebration. The children participated in Valentine games, crafts, and snacks. The party finished with a Valentine exchange. First Grade Second Grade We continue to enjoy reading our series books! In addition to finding patterns across a series, we are growing big ideas by discussing our findings with our reading partners. In math, we continue subtraction with regrouping. Please be sure to help your child master the math facts. This includes addition to 20 and subtraction from 20. Your home support will greatly benefit your child! In science, we are integrating our Solids and Liquids unit with our writing unit, Writing Lab Reports . We will be addressing the question, what is matter? We will seek to discover the properties of solids, liquids and gases. We will conduct experiments and record our findings. Although the highlight of our party was opening our Valentine‛s Day cards, we send our thanks to our wonderful homeroom parents for coordinating the donations for our party. Thank you also to our fabulous parents for sending in the heart-healthy treats, which made our party even more special. Third Grade To conclude the end of our Mystery Unit in Reader‛s Workshop this week, students completed self-reflections. Students determined which skills they did really well and identified 2-3 skills they would like to continue to focus on in our next reading unit. In Math, students learned about inverse operations relating to addition and subtraction; they also reviewed rounding, estimating sums and estimating differences. In Writer‛s Workshop, students used their checklists to edit their final copies of their Persuasive Essays. Many of the third graders were excited to begin typing their final copies. In Social Studies this week, students researched the lives and contributions of famous African Americans in small groups. Each group then became an expert on their famous person and taught the class about him/her. Most students were excited about this cooperative group project! Finally, students were most excited about celebrating Valentine‛s Day in school and a good time was had by all! Enjoy the long weekend! Fourth Grade Our students are finishing up their travel through the southeast region of the United States. We have integrated Black History, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the history of the southeast region. Through this study students have a deeper appreciation for the issues facing our country with civil rights. Thursday we focused on being healthy and keeping our hearts healthy. We concluded the day with the entire 4th grade having fruit and yogurt parfaits, veggies, a little chocolate and a Valentine treat. Fifth Grade Currently we are in the Social Issues unit of Reading Workshop. We are using Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli to highlight this unit. In writing we are learning about the different attributes of poetry and figurative language. We just celebrated Valentine‛s Day with heart healthy celebrations focusing on healthy foods.
