Highlights from the week at Indian Lane
First graders dressed like 100 year olds for the 100th Day of School on Feb. 19th.
February 15-19, 2016
Message from our Principal
The short week was jam packed with excitement at Indian Lane.
Throughout the week, we have worked with the students on creating a
safer, more efficient end-of-day dismissal process. Individual grade
levels practiced the new procedures throughout the week and the
whole school practiced together on Friday morning. We are hopeful
the new procedures will support getting the car line moving a bit faster
as well. An important reminder to all parents about car line. Please do
not park your car in the side parking lot and walk to the doors to pick
up your child. It is necessary for you to be in your car and drive
through the car line to pick up your students for the safety of all our
children at Indian Lane.
Friday was especially busy. We started the day off with the Bobcat
Breakfast. It was great to see the Bobcat make an appearance and
celebrate with all the families that turned out for some good food and
company. It was also the 100th day of school. Students came in
dressed as if they were a hundred years old and participated in many
activities to celebrate the 100th day of school. Just another great
week at Indian Lane.
From our Classrooms
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students met Mr. L this week. He taught us many words
that begin with the L sound. Students also brought in objects that
begin with the L sound. During Reading workshop the children learned
different ways to help their reading partners decode unknown words.
The children learned the difference between addition and subtraction.
They learned hands on how to take parts from a whole group and that a
minus sign symbolizes taking away. The kindergarten students
completed the week by celebrating the 100th Day of School. During
the celebration children made a necklace of 100 Fruit Loops, measured
objects, made a 100th day headband, counted 100 steps, and created a
trail mix of 100 snacks.
First Grade
th
The 100
Day of School celebration was so much fun! The kids made
super cute portraits of themselves at 100 years old. They rotated
through lots of different stations with their friends. Some of their
favorites were: the 100 cup challenge, 100 dots in a gumball machine
and the race to 100. Be on the lookout for photos of our adorable
centenarians on our website soon!
Second Grade
Hopefully the snowy days are all now behind us! Despite the shortened
week, our second graders accomplished a lot. Reading Workshop had
them thinking about the characters in their series. Writing Workshop
consisted of informational writing integrated with our current science
unit. Specifically, we created a glossary of words we are using to
describe the solids and liquids with which we are working. We
completed, reviewed and assessed math Topic 6. This unit focused on
subtracting from 100 using various strategies. This included using the
algorithm, place value blocks, compensation and an open number line to
solve both one and two-step story problems. We continued to practice
using the bar diagram, for it is a helpful tool to organize information.
It also assists us in deciding WHAT we need to figure out and also
helps us to choose which operation, or operations, to use. We also

celebrated the 100
Day of School! Be sure to ask your child about
this special day!
Third Grade
Another week in the books! Third graders reviewed adding and
subtracting with regrouping or borrowing up to 1000 in math; then they
estimated equations by rounding to check their answers. Next week, we
will be moving onto Fractions! In Social Studies, students continued to
prepare their group presentations based on the lives and contributions
of famous African Americans. In Reader‛s Workshop, students
examined the similarities and differences between biographies and
other types of text such as fiction books and nonfiction books. In
Writer‛s Workshop, students continued to work on publishing their
Persuasive Essays.
Fourth Grade
Fourth graders visited the American Helicopter Museum in West
Chester as culmination to our study of Motion and Design. Students
participated in “What a Drag” lesson and saw a video about the many
uses of helicopters. They also learned about the forces affecting the
flight of planes and helicopters and how engineers changed designs to
make them more efficient aircraft. Students then had the opportunity
to sit in different helicopters and see the many different designs of
helicopters over the years.
Fifth Grade
In reading, we are continuing our social issues book clubs. Students
are identifying how the main characters in the stories are dealing with
the issues they are facing. In writing, we are working on poetry,
figurative language, and wrapping up our argument essay unit. In math,
we are beginning a unit on fractions including adding and subtracting
fractions with like and unlike denominators. Students also switched
for the new units in science and social studies.
From our Specialists:
Art
All grade levels have started a new unit. First graders are reviewing
portraiture. Second graders are studying the art of Africa. Third
graders are examining Renaissance art. Fourth graders are reviewing
art in motion. Fifth graders are glazing their ceramic pieces.
Gym
All grades began partner and group gymnastics activities.
Library
First and second graders learned to login to IL MacBooks and/or
Google Drive accounts. Third, fourth, and fifth graders are learning
more about Google Drive and Google Classroom. Fifth graders also
began a research project using a True Book on Scholastic‛s TrueFlix.
Wednesday, 2/17th‛s IL Night at MFL was so much fun. We raised
some money for MFL and had fun decorating tiles for the Community
Room. The next IL Night at MFL is Wednesday, March 30th at 6:00
p.m. If you would like to volunteer in the library, please visit Mrs.
Hatton‛s website or click here to sign up. Thank you!
