From the Principal:
We held a Pride Assembly on Friday, October 9, and I was amazed by all of the school spirit
and accomplishments. We had Glenwood trivia and honored our students for achieving 100
PAWS.
School Wide PJ Day on Friday for meeting our Glenwood Goal of 100 PAWS!
Exciting News Glenwood Families! Our students have been working hard on our Glenwood
goals of being Ready, Respectful, and Responsible! We have achieved our goal of reaching
100 Paws for Praise this year- GREAT WORK! As a school wide reward for everyone's positive
behavior, all students and staff are encouraged to wear pajamas to school on Friday, October
23rd! Please ensure students PJ's are appropriate for school, allow them to move easily and
comfortably, and please have students wear sneakers with their PJ's so we can still have a safe
and educational day!

Glenwood Clubs/Activities Calendar
Check out the clubs/activities calendar on our webpage. Since we have so many clubs and
activities taking place at Glenwood, we decided to create a separate calendar for clubs and
activities. We hope the new calendar will help everyone keep organized!
Thanks for your continued support! Feel free to contact me at 610-627-6901 or
ebucci@rtmsd.org if you have questions or concerns with which I may be able to assist.

KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten homework has officially begun! Please look in your child's backpack for his/her
homework folder. Inside you will find a letter telling you that homework is not due until Friday
each week. This folder should STAY AT HOME until Friday mornings and the folder will be sent
home again with a new week's homework on Mondays (or the first day of the school week).
FIRST GRADE
The first graders are beginning the second topic in the new math program. The first graders will
be learning to count and add on. They will be learning about "doubles" and "near doubles". The
students will use tens frames in solving math equations and the students will learn how to use a
number line to add and subtract.
SECOND GRADE
Second graders have completed the first Topic (Unit) of the new math program. We are moving
into Topic 2 which deals with equal groups and repeated addition which is the foundation for
multiplication. Thank you for your prompt responses to the field trip permission slips and to all of
the volunteers who will be chaperones. If, by chance, you don't yet have your clearances
verified by the school district, please don't wait. Thank you also for your support with homework.
Be sure to observe your child reading 30 minutes each night from their reading bag. We
compare it to riding a bike...you don't become better at riding a bike by pretending to ride it while
mom and dad aren't looking. They must read a lot to become better readers.
THIRD GRADE
Third graders are continuing to strengthen their reading comprehension by learning and
reviewing ways to talk about books. Forming predictions based on evidence from the text,
noticing how characters change in response to events in the story, and making connections
from the text to their own life experiences are all starting points from which students are
developing conversations about the books they read. Using post-it notes and reading response
notebooks, third graders record and respond to their own thoughts about what they read to
prepare for partner and book club discussions in class. Students look forward to sharing and
extending great ideas about their reading each day!
FOURTH GRADE
All of the technological pieces of homework are up and ready to go! Your child should be
completing a Kidbiz every week. Please remember that children must earn a 75% or above the
first time, or they must complete an additional Kidbiz. Math classes have given Khan
assignments. Your child may go on Pearson Realize for re-teaching or enrichment of math
lessons. If you have any questions, please see your child's teacher.
Fourth grade is raring to go! We are going to the Tyler Arboretum on November 12th. We will be
studying ecosystems, and will complete a pond study! Please look for the permission slip to
come home today.
FIFTH GRADE
As we move into the latter portion of October, the 5th grade students continue to develop their
talents as writers of narratives in Writer’s Workshop, paying particular attention to the art of
writing from within the story rather than writing summaries. Later this month, students will write,
publish and celebrate one of their works of writing. In Reader’s Workshop, Glenwood’s 5th
grade students continue to develop a deeper understanding of how to best read works of fiction.
In particular,
5th grade students are paying careful attention to the importance of character development in
works of fiction. In social studies, the 5th grade continues to look at the first inhabitants of
North America. In Science, the 5th grade continues to use the scientific method in our study of
weather. In grammar, students are focusing attention on the art of writing a good sentence.

GLENWOOD HOLIDAY HELP
A Letter from Mrs. Vellios-Miller: School Counselor
October, 2015
Dear Parents and Guardians,
With winter and various holidays approaching, I wanted to take this opportunity to let
all families know about some ways that Glenwood is able to provide financial help
during the upcoming months and for the rest of the school year. First and foremost, our
priority is to help families afford school-sponsored activities that involve a cost. We are
able to help with events that are attended by all students (such as field trips). There are
other programs sponsored by the district and Glenwood which provide assistance to
those who need it, such as:




Winter coat drive (in the fall)
Holiday help (for the winter holidays)
Book Fair Coupon
Other activities as they arise
If you and your family are in need of financial help and could be assisted through
any of these opportunities, you can contact me at 610-627-6920 or dvellios@rtmsd.org.
If your need is winter coats or holiday help, I ask that you call or email as soon as
possible. Please know that everything will be handled in a confidential manner.
Additionally, if you are interested in donating to Glenwood’s “giving fund” in the form
of a gift card, please contact me through the above contact information. We will also
be raising money through our annual Penny Competition.
Thank you,
Dana Vellios-Miller
Guidance Counselor
