KINDERGARTEN
This week, Glenwood Kindergarteners are all about finishing up our Math unit on Comparing
Numbers 0-10. In Reading Workshop, students are getting familiar with the words beginning,
middle and end as they relate to stories. So far, we have covered the following uppercase and
lower case letters: T, M, S, A, B, C. In Phonics, we are working hard on beginning and ending
sounds of CVC words.
FIRST GRADE
The first graders will be celebrating Grinch Day on Monday, December 21st. The students will
learn many peer problem solving strategies that day. The students will have a fun filled day
doing many Grinch related activities, along with learning how to do the "Grinch Grin"!
SECOND GRADE
Second grade is studying solids and liquids, this week we are learning about the properties of
liquids. We are working with Mrs. Rigatti learning how to do computer programming. In reading,
we are reading fiction and fantasy books and learning about the characters in the story. In
math, we are finishing Unit 4 and are testing on this unit this week.
THIRD GRADE
This week in math, the third graders are working diligently to get topic 4 wrapped up. We are
looking forward to moving onto Topic 5 where we will master multiplication and division. We
began our brand new reading unit this week. We have been busy exploring nonfiction,
comparing and contrasting fiction and nonfiction, and starting a new genre of books. Our new
reading unit is giving us some ideas as we continue our expert writing pieces. Third graders
switched their science/social studies cycle this week as well. Each class is working with a new
teacher to explore different information about our world. It’s been a busy, hard working week in
third grade!
FOURTH GRADE
Fourth grade is on the move! We are writing our essays using the five paragraph format. They
are learning to use the "Bing, Bang, Bongo" method of writing an essay. We also enjoyed an
Hour of Code this week, and practiced the school goal of, "Being Responsible" as we helped the
children in first grade practice their Hour of Code! We are excited about the upcoming
Geography Bee, where two members of each fourth grade class will be competing with the fifth
grade finalist for the Geography Bee Title! This is an exciting time!
4th Grade needs clear 2 liter soda bottles for our Ecosystems unit. If you have any, please send
them to one of the fourth grade teachers.
FIFTH GRADE
As we move into the second week of December, in Writer’s Workshop, the 5th grade has turned
its attention to taking a closer look at best practices in developing an understanding of Text
Dependent Analysis (TDA). Here, the focus is on students being able to read a text and then
respond to information gained specifically from the text. In Reader’s Workshop, Glenwood’s 5th
graders have turned their attention to understanding and developing strategies for how to best
read narrative nonfiction. In particular, 5th grade students will be paying careful attention to the
reading of text dealing with disaster stories and biographies. In social studies, the 5th grade
continues to look at the first Europeans in North America and how their arrival in North America
impacted the Native American population. In Science, the 5th grade continues to use the
scientific method in our study of weather. In Math, the 5th grade is taking a closer look at how to
divide large numbers. In grammar, students are focusing attention on best practices in the art of
writing a good sentence, in particular how to best use semicolons, commas and compound
sentences.
