POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Manager, Network Systems Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Professional Technology Support K JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the effective procurement, installation, operation, maintenance, security, and coordination of all network infrastructure and related devices. YEARLY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: PERCENT OF TIME 1. Manage the installation and maintenance of network and telecommunications 30% infrastructure and related devices to ensure that the system resources are available to staff and used properly to include tuning and preventative maintenance to prevent unscheduled downtime. 2. Manage network systems to ensure a secure networking and telecommunications environment to include monitoring unauthorized use and provide for disaster recovery. 30% 3. Identify technology advances to improve the organization’s technological capabilities. Conduct studies of the telecommunications and network systems to determine hardware, software, capacity requirements and usage, and operational support. Recommend, design, implement, and test efficient approaches to networking and telecommunications. 25% 4. Responsible for personnel management activities for an assigned area and/or position, which may include orienting, directing assigned personnel, providing guidance concerning personal and professional development and reporting personnel performance to appropriate supervisor. Recommend appropriate personnel related actions and implement, within area of responsibility, the affirmative action and equal opportunity programs of the District, as applicable. 10% 5. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years. Knowledge of Oracle, UNIX and/or other comparable operating systems. Knowledge of HP3000, DEC or comparable hardware configurations. Equipment Used: Personal Computer and a variety of equipment associated with a general office environment in addition to Cisco 15454 ONS equipment, fiber optic network, a variety of Cisco network router and switching equipment, Avaya Definity G3 PBX, and Intuity Audix Voice Mail. Software Used: A variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, presentation, network management, and telecommunications software, e.g. Novell software, Unix/Linux Software, G3R10 Avaya Software, and Network Management. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Alternative or combined skills in understanding, negotiating, selecting, developing, and motivating people are important to the highest degree due to constant interaction with other people, at any level within the organization or the community, position’s accountability for the development, motivation, assessment, and reward of employees, and to deal with irrational situations where the outcome is unpredictable. WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with occasional distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.
