1 Lesson Plan Course Title: Concepts of Engineering and Technology Session Title: Principles of Ideation Performance Objective: At the end of this lesson, the students will have performed an internet research project to determine how ideation is used in STEM careers, discuss their findings on how it is being used in industry with team members, and develop a team concept and a PowerPoint presentation showing their ideas about Ideation and how it works according to the rubric. Specific Objectives: Each student will develop individual ideas on how ideation works and its values. Each student will document their research information from their internet research to help add value to their ideas on how to use ideation. Students will develop a team concept on Ideation and how it works. Teams will discuss how they did or did not use ideation in this project. Students will develop a PowerPoint presentation on Ideation and how it works as a team. Students will make a 3-8 minute team presentation to the class. They need to formulate their method of guiding students through the process of learning about ideation. What is Ideation? PowerPoint presentation 2. Internet Materials Needed: 1. Internet Research on Using Ideation handout 2. Terms and Definitions for Ideation handout 3. Ideation Presentation Rubric Equipment Needed: 1. Overhead projector 2. Student computers with Microsoft PowerPoint installed 3. Printer Learner Preparation: Basic understanding of what is meant by ideation. Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): SAY: Today we are going to learn about Ideation. It is a method of gathering information and ideas. ASK: How do we come up with ideas for new products? (Guide the students to an answer of Brainstorming if no one answers it.) ASK: What are some good things about brainstorming and what can be some bad things about it? ASK: What do you think would be a better method of getting ideas? SAY: Today you are going to look at a method that some people think may be a better way of getting more ideas on new products. SAY: I want you to write down these terms and consider the terms and the following questions in the research project you will do: Anonymity, Affordability, Convenience ASK: Does it better-develop contributions? ASK: Is it better to have creative incentive system? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. 4 ASK: How is the teamwork different? ASK: How do you think you could or would not use Ideation to collect new ideas for product design? SAY: Your assignment for today is to research Ideation as an individual; put your ideas together with team members to develop a team concept on Ideation and how it works; and develop a 3-8 minute team PowerPoint presentation on Ideation to present to the class. Outline Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructors can use the PowerPoint presentation, slides, handouts, and note pages in conjunction with the following outline. MI Outline Notes to Instructor I. Identify what is Ideation A. What is Ideation? B. How does Ideation work? C. Discuss why Ideation may or may not be important. Teacher should review presentation for terms. II. Show What is Ideation? PowerPoint presentation A. Identify key terms on handout. B. What is the difference between Ideation and Brainstorming? C. Gathering useful ideas D. Rules E. Ideation solutions Teacher presents PowerPoint and expands on it. III. Teacher presents Ideation PowerPoint assignment A. Identify requirements for the project B. Provide a timeline for the project. (This will depend on your class schedule.) C. Students will research and document classroom and workplace Ideation 1. Identify Ideation as defined by internet websites 2. Identify Ideation as used by Industry today 3. Does it seem like everyone is going to Ideation? D. Students identify Ideation as it could be used in the school setting E. PowerPoint requirements include Teacher introduces the activity and establishes standards for activity and when it is due. . It is recommended that the teacher prepare a PPT presentation on Ideation for the local websites for students to view. Teacher distributes the Internet Research on Using Ideation handout to each student. Teacher needs to remind students of copyright issues and Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. Team presentation will be 3-8 minutes permission to use pictures. Google Images is a good resource for finding pictures. IV. Divide students into teams and then: A. Hold discussion on what they discovered about Ideation in industry B. Brainstorm design ideas for team PowerPoint presentation C. Appoint team leader and present ideas Teacher assists students in organizing appropriate teams for the project. V. Students present PowerPoint team presentation to the class A. Students will present for 3 to 8 minutes B. Describe how their team functioned to do the project 1. Team skills 2. Leader’s role 3. Communication 4. Problem solving C. Teacher will grade activity with rubric Teacher encourages students in giving their presentation. The teacher asks the students about how they functioned as a team and what that means. The teacher should not just read it or let the students read it. Explain and give personal examples as they go. As students are brainstorming ideas for their presentation, walk around the class and help to guide the students’ discussion. Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Students should be monitored while they are doing research and preparing the PowerPoint team presentation to ensure they are on task. Summary Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): Question: What have we learned about Ideation and how it could be used in our future both in the school and in STEM careers? Answer: As you can see you might use Ideation in many situations, but not in all situations, because of timelines, expense, or you just might not need any more information to design your product or improve it. Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): Watch the students in their discussion to evalute how much they have learned. Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): The formal assessment will be the evaluation of the Ideation PowerPoint presentation they designed and made and the Ideation Presentation Rubric provided with this lesson. Extension Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Ask the students to start exploring ways that they could use Ideation to improve the student’s life at the school and make it a more interesting learning environment. Affordability: You can engage participants without travel and facility requirements. Better-Developed Contributions: The extended session period, combined with engaging creativity exercises, encourages participants to approach business problems from new perspectives and collect their thoughts before responding. Convenience: IDEALYST’s asynchronous format means that participants can log into the session at their own convenience, day or night, whenever an idea occurs to them. Creative Incentive System: IDEALYST’s scoring system grants points commensurate with the number and quality of ideas contributed, thereby solving the "free-rider" problem. Participants receive a portion of the cash or prize pool based on the number of points they’ve earned. Teamwork: Participants are rewarded not only for the ideas they contribute, but also for providing a springboard for others to build upon. This results in better-developed ideas. You are to come up with a definition of Ideation. Include the following items in your research from the Terms and Definitions for Ideation handout: o o o o o o Anonymity Affordability Better-develop contributions Convenience Creative Incentive System Teamwork Locate information from companies that are using Ideation and how those companies feel about it. Be sure to document the internet address along with comments. 2. You will be placed in teams by the teacher to develop a team concept on Ideation and how it works. The team will develop a PowerPoint presentation on the team’s ideas about Ideation and how it works. The team will need to address the above information on terms and definitions included in this lesson and comments from companies that use Ideation. The team needs to remark on whether they would use Ideation in the future or not. If they feel it has no value they need to address why they feel it has no value and what they would use instead of it. 3. The presentation should have 10 slides with references and it should take no longer than 3-8 minutes to present as a team. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. Ideation Presentation Rubric Task Statement: As a team, design a PowerPoint presentation on Ideation and how it works and make a 3-8 minute team presentation. Task Assignment: Students will research what Ideation is and how it is used in industry to design a PowerPoint presentation on Ideation (as a team) that includes a definition, cover slide, objective, pictures or clip art that represent methods of carrying out Ideation, key terms, and references.
