estwood Elementary is a school
dedicated to learning and grow- Westwood is a Level 3 Green School!
We have been participating in the King County Green
ing. Westwood serves approximately
Schools program. Through this program we have added
three hundred twenty one students,
food scraps collections (compost pick up), increased our
ranging from kindergarten to fifth
recycling rates, decreased our garbage pick up, saved
grade. Our lens from which we work is energy and decreased our water usage. Thanks to a grant
to love our students and equip them
from the Enumclaw Schools Foundation, we added raised
beds to support our science curriculum and our Green
with the skills necessary to succeed in
School projects. We are very proud of our Green Team!
life. We strive to provide a strong
academic foundation, appropriate
social/emotional development and citizenship attributes that are necessary in the twenty-first century.
Growth is the goal of each day.
Clear and Shared Focus
School-wide we have a singular and shared focus, our students. In every decision made and action
taken, we ensure that what is best for our students is at the forefront of our thought process and the
motivation behind what we do. Kids are the reason we exist and our actions reflect this.
High Standards and Expectations for All Students
At the very core of our belief system is the certainty that all students can learn at high leels. Westwood
strives to provide meaningful and rigorous learning activities that create a strong academic base, but
also the ability to solve problems, think critically and communicate effectively.
Effective School Leadership
At Westwood, leadership is not defined or held by any one person. We believe in the power of a team
and collective leadership within defined roles. This model allows for maximum use of potential and
enables our teachers, staff and students to use their skillset to flourish. Leadership roles within our
program include our teacher leadership program, technology leaders, PLC, clubs/activities and ASB.
High Levels of Collaboration and Communication
Collaboration is the “how” of how we operate. Within the context of a professional learning community, our teachers, paras and staff come together to discuss teaching strategies, student achievement and
best practices. Through a collaborative, team approach, we can accomplish much more than we could
individually.
Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Aligned with Standards
As the landscape of our society changes with the innovations of technology, we need to ask ourselves
two questions: What are we teaching are students and why are we teaching that? Westwood is committed to providing our students with skills necessary to succeed in life. To accomplish this, we align our
instructional program to state standards, researched based strategies and known best practices. Throughout our learning, we use assessments as a mirror to help us see a clear picture of how effective our teaching has been. Relevant, rigorous, engaging and effective are the goals of each lesson.
Frequent Monitoring of Learning and Teaching/ Focused Professional Development
Teaching is an incredibly challenging and difficult job to do, when done right. Meeting the emotional
and academic needs of each individual within a class is a monumental task. Westwood teachers are
professionals and accomplish great feats for our students on a daily basis. As professionals, we believe
that there is always room for learning and growth. To initiate this process, teachers are observed on a
regular basis and given feedback that is aligned to a research based rubric. Teachers will also observe
each other, coaches and even the principal to learn and grow.
Supportive Learning Environment
In order for learning to take place, students must feel safe and enjoy school. At Westwood we use a
system called, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. This program incorporates our school
rules: be safe, be respectful and be responsible. These rules are defined for each area of the school,
taught to our students and reinforced with positive consequences. Students can earn a PAWsitive office
referral, Cougar Cash and Golden Awards. We intentionally try to recognize all of the positive traits
our students are demonstrating.
High Levels of Family and Community Involvement
Out of an entire year, we only have our students for a small fraction of time. The team at Westwood
acknowledges and knows the importance of an active and engaged community and volunteer system. As a result, we do our best to encourage parent participation through community events, proactive communication and our Parent Teacher Organization.
In conclusion, Westwood is an amazing collection of students and staff dedicated to growing and learning. We are a school driven to succeed because in doing so we are changing the lives of our students
and contributing to a bright future.
