Works Cited or Bibliography
What is the Difference
A Bibliography or Works Cited page is a list of the sources such as a Books, Magazine
Articles, Websites, Encyclopedias, etc, which were used to write your research paper. A
Bibliography or Works Cited appears as a separate page at the end of your research paper or
the last slide of your PowerPoint presentation.
Works Cited: Lists only those sources you parenthetically cited in your
research paper.
Example of parenthetical citation:
After the devastating defeat at Prophet Town, Tecumseh had to accept that his dream of
a unified Indian resistance was not probable and that the white man would be their
eternal foe (Dunn 42).
Example of Parenthetical Citation to the Works Cited page:
Dunn, John M. The Relocation of the Native American Indian. Detroit: Lucent, 2006. Print.
Bibliography:
A bibliography is a list of all the sources used when
doing your research.
It can include Works Cited sources but it also includes all the sources you used for
background information but did not cite in your paper.
Ask your teacher if she/he is requiring a Works Cited or Bibliography for your assignment.
Rule of thumb…Use Bibliography if your teacher is NOT asking for you to parenthetically cite within
the paper.
