But since that time, the office has passed back and forth between Republicans and
Democrats. In presidential elections, the Republican and Democratic parties have both played an important role. Since 1852, Republican and Democratic presidential candidates have won Delaware's electoral votes about the same number of times.

865,000 grew by 10.4 percent between 2000 and 2007. The U.S. population grew by
7.2 percent during that same period. Delaware has a higher percentage of non-
Hispanic whites, a higher percentage of blacks and a higher median household income than the nation as a whole, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics.
About 66 percent of Delaware’s voting-age citizens cast a ballot in the 2004 general election, which was slightly higher than the national figure of 64 percent.
