Lesson Plan Course Title: Principles of Manufacturing Session Title: Mass Production in Manufacturing Performance Objective: The students will be able to create a paper towel holder using mass production techniques whereby quality control will be checked on each part using the Quality Control Check Sheet. Specific Objectives: The student is able to: list types of mass production explore techniques of mass production by creating a paper towel holder project inspect the quality of a paper towel holder Preparation TEKS Correlations: This lesson, as published, correlates to the following TEKS. Any changes/alterations to the activities may result in the elimination of any or all of the TEKS listed. Principles of Manufacturing: 130.322(c)(4)(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)(G) …distinguish between disciplines such as engineering, science, and technology; …analyze engineering concepts to solve practical problems; …use problem-solving tools such as calculators and computers; …evaluate computers for simulation tasks; …use tools for laboratory equipment testing; …evaluate software to design quality assurance models. 130.322(c)(5)(D) …research the patenting process. 130.322(c)(9)(A)(B)(C) …master relevant safety tests; …analyze hazardous materials; and …safely dispose of hazardous materials. 130.322(c)(16)(A)(B) …defend a budget for a project; and …determine the most effective strategies to minimize costs. Career: 127.13(c)(1)(A)(B) ...identify employment opportunities; …demonstrate the application of essential workplace skills in the career acquisition process; 127.13(c)(2)(E)(F) …exhibit productive work habits, ethical practices, and a positive attitude; …demonstrate the ability to work with the other employees to support the organization and complete assigned tasks; 127.13(c)(7)(B) …demonstrate knowledge of personal and occupational safety practices in the workplace; Teacher Preparation: Teacher should review the Mass Production in Manufacturing PowerPoint presentation; and read the Mass Production in Manufacturing Teacher’s Guide. The teacher should assemble the needed jigs, fixtures, patterns and suggested storage containers for the lesson. Teacher should have an example of finished project to show the class. Teacher should review “Creating and Staffing Manufacturing Companies” lesson found at www.cte.unt.edu (MFG, Principles of Manufacturing course), if this type of manufacturing will be used for this project. View “Manufacturing Companies” lesson if necessary. Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): SAY: Today we are going to learn about mass production in manufacturing. ASK: What do you think are the benefits of doing just one part of the project? SAY: Please discuss briefly. ASK: Are there any negatives to doing just one part of the project? If so, what are they? SAY: Please discuss briefly. ASK: What do you think would happen to the production if someone did not complete their part in a timely manner? SAY: Please discuss briefly. SAY : The next couple of days will be spent using mass production techniques to complete a paper towel holder. SHOW: Paper towel holder SAY: Here is an example of the project that you will be building. SAY: You will be assigned the part of the project that you will be responsible for. Question: How do you think the mass production process could be made better? Answer: Allow several students to answer. Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): Listen to the students as they discuss to evaluate how much they have learned. Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): The formal assessment will be the evaluation of the completed project. Quality control will be used on each part using the “Quality Control Check Sheet”. Extension Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Students could make their own paper towel holder by completing each step individually. The students could complete a T chart on comparing and contrasting pros and cons of each method. This is a type of rigor in learning that helps with the TAKS test.
