Lesson Title: Simulation: An Accounting Simulation Using Special Journals
and Covering a Publicly Held Merchandising Corporation
Specific Objective: Apply principles and procedures learned in Units 1-5.
Performance Objectives:
















Analyze source documents;
Journalize business transactions in the appropriate journals;
Post transactions to the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers;
Write checks to pay bills;
Record weekly bank deposits;
Reconcile the bank statement;
Prepare a cash proof;
Prepare End-of-month schedules of accounts receivable and payable;
Prepare a work sheet;
Make necessary adjusting entries;
Prepare the income statement;
Prepare the statement of stockholders’ equity;
Prepare the balance sheet;
Make the closing entries;
Prepare the post-closing trial balance
Complete the Audit Test.

Preparation
Materials Needed:




Overhead projector
Glencoe’s Simulation Import Expressions.
Century 21’s Southgate Hardware.
Accounting software and spreadsheet and/or database software.
Sponge/Focus Activity:
Prepare a Word Scramble of terms from the unit. Use projection system or
overhead to show the Word Scramble to the class. Ask for responses and give
immediate feedback.

Lesson Content:

Use Glencoe’s Simulation Import Expressions, or Century 21’s Southgate
Hardware.

Have students use the software you have utilized so far in this class. You can
create a check register in a spreadsheet or database.

Students can prepare cash proofs and financial statements in a spreadsheet.
Teaching Strategies:


Encourage your students to utilize any available accounting software.
Let your students work independently.
Assessment:



Check your students’ work and let them make corrections.
Students take the Audit Test over the mini-simulation.
Students also prepare their portfolio with work samples from the class so far
that have been done on the computer.
o Have them include an example of each application learned so far. (See
Activity 5.4.1)
