Instructor/Trainer References: Online markup and proofing websites Instructional Aids: Online Mark-Up and Proofing slide presentation Online Mark-Up and Proofing Rubric Samples of any traditionally marked up print job that you have on hand so that the students can see how it has traditionally been accomplished. Materials Needed: Paper Pencil Equipment Needed: Computer and projection system with appropriate software to display slide presentation Computers with Internet access for students Learner None Introduction MI Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): ASK: Please let me see a show of hands: "How many of you have ever marked up or proofed an item to get it ready for a large press run?” ASK: If I told you that there is an easy way for you to do this same chore online with only your file and the internet, would you think it would be cost effective and efficient to do it that way? SAY: Well, let’s investigate a website that I know and try to use their demo to learn more about how this works. Outline MI Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructor Notes: I. Review traditional methods and tools for proofing and marking up documents A. Sketches/designs approved by multiple proofers B. Color (markers) C. Red and blue non-repro pencils D. Variety of symbols 1. Moving location 2. Close gaps in text Note: A simple online search of the term “Proofreader’s marks” reveals a number of online examples. Merriam-Webster online has a nice graphic of traditional proofreader’s marks and examples to illustrate use within a document. Identify new markup tools A. Online B. Typical markup tools in digital format C. Option for forwarding markup to others III. Discuss the importance of using multiple reviewers to proofread and markup documents A. Multiple perspectives B. More accurate final product C. Forwarding a single document versus sending out multiple marked up documents for review IV. Identify costs associated with using online markup tools A. Subscription rates B. Operating system requirements C. Special software D. Required hardware Have several proofreaders’ markup examples on hand to show students traditional methods for marking up a document. Students can do a quick Internet search to determine various considerations for online markup tools. Some sites require special hardware. Some sites require special software. Some sites have no requirements. Students should explore and weigh options. Application MI Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Once the students have viewed the slide presentation, ask them to complete research on the topic. Later, after the students have developed their own listings of services, they can work through a demo section of a markup and proofing website. Once they have completed the demo, they should be prepared to answer questions and verbally evaluate the procedure. MI Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Student demonstration with teacher input and guidance. Summary MI Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): Have students create questions based on the lesson. Collect all of the questions, divide students into small groups, redistribute the questions, and have small groups work together to answer them. Have groups share questions and answers with the AAVTC: Print and Imaging Technology: Marking Up and Proofing Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved. 3 whole class. Evaluation MI Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): Teacher will monitor student progress during independent practice/application and provide independent reteach/redirection as needed. MI Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Student understanding will be evaluated with the Mark-Up and Proofing Rubric. Extension MI Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Students who have successfully mastered the concepts associated with the lesson may assist other students as peer tutors. Encourage students to use online markup and editing on future projects. If possible have your district pay for an annual subscription so you and the students can utilize this technology on a regular basis. Student will explain to the instructor verbally what the key advantages are to having a team of proofers look at a document before the press run. Student will demonstrate that they know how to use an online proofing service by completing their demo section to the satisfaction of the instructor. Continued Improvement Outstanding Proficient 3 points Student listed a minimal number of websites that offer online proofing services. 3 points 2 points Student listed a moderate number of websites with online proofing services. 2 points The student was able to express a high level of comprehension for the need for team proofing.
